Luv2luv2luvya got a reaction from sporters in What was the biggest surprise for you at or after surgery? What do you wish you had known?
I was honestly surprised at how easy it is NOW. I'll be 6 weeks post-op on Tuesday. I have had no issues or aversions to any foods or beverages. The only thing that is difficult for me and can make me uncomfortable every so often is eating too fast! I try to remind myself every day. But honestly I've never once been nauseous, never once vomited. Make sure you take your Miralax though... That almost became an issue for me.
In the first week, I struggled for a couple of days with getting my Protein and fluids in. However it now feels like that was nothing! I hope your journey is as smooth as mine has been thus far! I also feel like I read everything I possibly could, and expected all of these things to happen. Everyone is different. I'm feeling great, and grateful!! Good luck!

Yes, everyones journey is different. Ive only lost 33 lbs. since surgery on 3/31/17. Slow loss is better than no loss. I am now in onederland, can fit in my daughters size 14 jeans, and no longer take medication for hbp. Keep pushing and following your doctors plan and youll be just fine.

Your losses will become slower as time passes. That's the natural progression of things.
As an aside, I lost 15 pounds during my first month with the sleeve. Thereafter, I lost at the rate of a whopping 6 pounds a month. Yep, you read it correctly: 6 pounds a month!
However, I'm not sweating it. The long term result (maintaining our goal weight) is far more important than losing like a house on fire during the weight loss phase. The important part is I lost 100+ pounds, attained my goal weight and have been keeping it off.
    Good luck to you.

I hate the smell and taste of most Protein powders... However I did find one, unflavored, that I am now using daily! It's genpro, 30g of protein in 1 tablespoon! I purchased mine off of Amazon.

Thank you for your detailed response! I guess I'll look for another powder! Sorry I didn't search through the forum -- sometimes when I do that I'll get dozens of posts that don't answer my question. I don't like a lot of meat so I'm trying to find a powder I can mix with my mashed cauliflower or other puréed veggies when I hit the purée stage in a couple of days.

OK, this is going to be a bit long winded, but you asked! I am literally going to copy/paste my past post because I don't feel like typing a book.
I find the best way to prepare GENEPRO is to make sure the lid is on tightly and then chuck it in the trash. The makers of that stuff are about as shady as they come. They say their magical process reduces the size of Protein molecules! In their own words:
They are saying their 10g of special protein is equivalent to 30g whey.
I believe this says it best about Genepro:
Long story short, they are selling lies. Most likely they are selling BCAA's and calling it protein. Do yourself a favor and buy a reputable protein brand. Gold Standard is good brand. There are so many manufacturers that lie on their labels, you almost have to look them up and see how many lawsuits they have against them before you buy!
If their process was true, every other maker out there would be following suit because it is such a cutthroat business. The fact that most retail chains refuse to carry it is evidence of the company's reputation.
The only reason I reply (yet again) to this type of post is to protect new patients from wasting money on snakeoil. I need to bookmark my reply to this ridiculous garbage product. It comes up so often it's a PITA to search for it. The manufacturers even admit that there is really only 10 grams of protein, but it is magically fast with absorption and is the equivalent to eating 30 grams of protein. It's a whey based product. It is most definitely not 30 grams of bio-available protein. The calories are just not there either.
This stuff does not contribute to satiety, meaning you will still be hungry. At best it leaves protein markers in the blood stream, more likely though your body will start to break down your own muscle tissue for the protein that it needs. It does not provide the building blocks the body needs for muscle tissue, nails and hair. So you are most likely will have issues with that.
Just stay away from this crap and ask your NUT if they are just espousing what a marketing rep told or did some actual leg work and investigated it. I'll wager they did not.
Oh, and on the subject of unflavored powder. They are just that, unflavored. That does not mean they have no flavor, it merely means that they do not mask the natural flavor of the powder. I tried unflavored in the beginning, but it only worked for me with very strong Soups like curries or Tomato.

Oh great, my nutritionist actually recommended it and I've been using it for a while now. What is wrong with it and is there a better option for unflavored Protein powder?

I'm not convinced by the science behind this stuff. Do some research before you rely too heavily on it.

Luv2luv2luvya reacted to PatientEleventyBillion in Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
    I see. Okay. So..
The Keto diet is about putting the body into a state of ketosis. It's effectively tricking the body, particularly the liver, into thinking you're starving, but it realizes you aren't, if you're doing this diet as it should be done.
The liver first synthesizes carbs and stores it for fuels, but it quickly can be completely full of it rather quickly, so it then turns into converting those carbs to fatty acids.. those fatty acids get sent around the bloodstream generally to areas rife with fat (in men it's primarily the gut, in women it's a lot of places), but they also infiltrate the liver itself.
When the liver is deprived of carbohydrates, it starts producing ketone bodies that tell areas that need energy (the brain, muscles, organs, etc. ) to start looking for other methods of energy consumption. The first method of consumption is Protein. The second one is fatty acids. For the muscles, they quickly can run out of fatty acids, so need a steady stream of protein to prevent the ketone bodies from having the body burn up the muscle Proteins instead as fuel (replacing them with fat). The organs like the brain, heart, etc. will easily adjust, using whatever protein it can (not much), and then changing over to burning up fat, which, in an obese person, is rife.
So it makes sense from a standpoint of a perfectly healthy person to go with a normal diet you suggest, which is in line with what the government typically suggests with their food pyramid, but in an obese person due to the excess accumulation of fat, this processed needs to be reversed. Ketosis is, I find, the quickest way of accomplishing this, and when done correctly, and especially under doctor supervision, is quite healthy.
And it's not to suggest eating foods rife with sucralose.. not a good idea. But the body needs protein anyways to avoid burning up the protein in muscles. A high fat diet I think is okay in the short term, because in a state of ketosis the body will burn through that quickly anyways, nothing will come from it. But yes, as a person becomes thinner and requires less energy input to satisfy what their body needs, you'll find that the high volume of ketone bodies and fat will wind up working against the person. So as they get smaller, they must adjust to what their body needs.
I find a logical approach is by far what works best.. what you'll see often is people who are religious-like about diets and such.. which is counterproductive.

I remember the day I broke down in my endocrine specialists office 3 weeks post surgery. The nurse thrust my meter into my face and asked why I had elevated numbers. I just told her I was still working on my Protein Shake from the morning, that I'm struggling, etc. She just kind of sugar shamed me without listening to me and I lost it. I started crying, and I didn't stop for 5 days. I'm not kidding. And when it was over I was ready to start this thing for real.

first week or two sucks. Focus first on getting your water/liquids since not making that goal will make you hungry/miserable/thirsty. THen worry about getting foodstuffs in. I could barely eat anything that week.

I lost it the 2nd day, 2x's the first week, once the 2nd week and once the 3rd week when I went back to work. I was told to expect "buyers remorse". So when it hit, I lost it, scared my family and then moved on cause I knew it was pretty much normal. I'm 2 days shy of 8 weeks post op and I have to say, it's much easier to drink and eat now. I still don't get the full 64oz of Water but I get between 50 and 60 and my surgeon said that is good. She said it will increase as time goes on.

I've read so much by now that I should have expected this, however maybe it's one of those things you think will "not happen to me". I'll be one week post-op tomorrow and I'm having a hard time getting my shakes, calories and Protein in. My whole body aches and I just feel bad in general. Follow up appointment is tomorrow, so here's to hoping I'm not alone! Thanks for listening.

Today I finished one Premier Protein, so that's 30 g Protein and 160 cal. And I've managed to try and sip on propel Water but haven't finished a 20oz bottle yet. Am also getting small amount of Gatorade down. I can't wait until the following Tuesday when I can begin the pureed stage! And I'm actually from NY originally, then PA and now I'm in South Carolina lol.

Yes so I had my surgery on Thursday May 11... I work part time jobs so iit's a bit easier to go back because tomorrow and Tues will be shorter shifts. that's only a week and a few days out of work..and I have been busy the past few days too feeling more myself.
I will say everyone is different. They say because I am a young male I am recovering quickly. But there is hope that others can too! I know some people go back to work within a few days while others took 3 weeks like you said. my doctor recommended 2 weeks off and then I started picking up shifts sooner because I felt good.
Yes I think everyone's pre-op diet is for the purpose of shrinking the liver (and the splean actually) to make room for the surgeon to safely do the procedure. I had to intake only 1000 calories/day and I ended up having less than that depending on the day. Low fats, no sugars... ect. I lost 16 lbs from those two weeks!
Nausea - YES that was my biggest concern too!
So in response... I talked to the anesthesiologist about this concern. She offered me a motion sickness patch, and also I requested that she give me anti-nausea medication while coming off of the anesthesia! IT WORKED- no issues!
Then in the hospital as I woke up it was apart of my medication to have more anti-nausea medication and that also worked great!
So I would not be afraid to ask for all of the medication to help with your concerns!
Now I am what my surgeon labels "stage 3" which is soft puree diet. Its basically thicker Soups, ... pureed vegetables... oh and scrambled egg whites. Its simple but so much better than the liquid phase! Friday I will move onto the 4th stage which is soft foods and puree diet which allows for heavier foods/puree.
