mustanglauri reacted to Creekimp13 in Had a really cool moment this weekend
I'm on a super restrictive liquid diet and my surgery is 11 days away.
Yesterday, I cooked the whole traditional Thanksgiving meal for my family.
When I wasn't eating any of it, my surgery came up as dinner conversation.... Joy!
And of course....there were naysayers. Gentle naysayers...but naysayers. And I expect this. People are gonna have different opinions, and of course people worry....I wasn't offended.
    But here's the cool part....
My daughter, who was home from college, jumped right into that conversation. But instead of addressing the naysayers, she says to me:
"Mom, have I told you how proud I am of you for addressing your health issues? When you called last week and told me your new a1c numbers were in the normal range and that you've already corrected your pre-diabetes, I was so happy. I want you to be around a long, long time, and I think you're doing so well. Last time we went for a walk together and I had to tell you to slow down cause you were killing me, I knew you were on the right track. I know your surgery is going to go really well because I know you research the hell out of everything you do. I am really excited for you, and really proud of you. Good job."
    My naysayers...were quiet after that.
God, my kid is awesome. What a cool person she's grown into.
Sorry for the proud Mommy gush... just meant a lot to me.

I love the Avia brand leggings at Walmart. They have a horizontal waist band, and a drawstring. For me, I can pull them up over my belly and they stay up fine.

I think it really varies from person to person. After my sleeve, at month 8, I hadn't lost but a small amount. But in June, I had major surgery and now, 6 months later, my hair is falling out like crazy.
I had the major Hair loss like this 2 years ago as well, after two major surgeries. I was so worried about it. I had a nurse that came to my house every other day and she told me that the large amount of hair loss is expected for some people and that after any major surgery almost all people will have some hair loss.
I don't think you need to be worried as to whether or not it's normal.

    Hi everyone,
My name is Donia and I live in Oklahoma. I will be having gastric sleeve surgery in 2-3 months and wanted to introduce myself. I have been busy with appointments and learning from my dietitian, exercise specialist, and others to help ensure a safe and successful journey. I have started really focusing on my Protein intake and am amazed at what a difference it makes. So glad to have found this group!

Hi Kathy what stick blender are you using? I can't seem to blend any of my meat so I'm sticking to ricotta and cottage cheese. tuna and canned chicken are too dry to get down. I too am in the puree stage week 3

Once the scale stops for 2 months (and inches also stop coming off), then you know you have reached the end of the surgical- induced weight loss.
If you want to lose more, it's back to old fashioned diet and exercise. Diet is still more important than exercise. Losses will be as hard to come by as they were before you had surgery. It takes commitment to the program.
Figure out how many calories you now consume, cut out a couple hundred, and things should start moving again. Real food is better than fake food. Cut out sugar and white flour.

mustanglauri reacted to OutsideMatchInside in 1000 calories per day...HOW?????
If you eat fish it is really easy to keep you calories low.
3 ounces of cod is 15 grams of Protein and 70 calories. You could eat 6 ounces 4 times a day and that is only 560 calories.
100 grams of chicken breast is 165 calories and 31 rams of protein.
A whole bag of baby spinach is like 40 calories.
If you eat protein and veggies and nothing processed is almost impossible to even hit 1000 calories a day.
I ate every 2 hours 4 to 5 times a day to get my protein in and was able to keep my calories low by just eating protein, and veggies.

Prior to my VSG I swore I would never wear skinny jeans. The couple times I tried them on in the past was not a joyful experience. If I was lucky enough to get them above my calves they did nothing for my figure. I would wiggle around trying to get them on and then feel like an udder shame when I looked in the mirror. I was solidly a boot cut jean type of girl.
Well..... I not only found a pair that fit but I love the way they look on my figure. Also, I'm wearing white! White is not a forgiving color, I've always been a black/dark solids girl but not anymore!

I was making a wonderful cream of zucchini Soup starting phase 2 and like an idiot, I popped a cut cubed zucchini in my mouth and ate like I used to. I caught myself after I swallowed no pain yet and have a slight discomfort but that is about it. I guess I will be standing in the corner all night literally. Should I be concerned and what should I look for in the coming days?

I started at 223- I'm at 180 13 weeks post op and my goal is also 135. I've had to retire all of my pre surgery pants and a lot of my tops- they just looked too baggy. I've relied on the kindness of friends who passed down clothes, shopping in my own closet and buying just a few things. You won't drop so quickly that you can't enjoy the new clothes. I went from a 16-18 to a 10 now already. It's also a fun treat to get a couple of new things. I'm passing off my larger clothes to a friend at work - it's such a blessing to get new clothes this way I want to bless someone else too.

I am almost 2 months out and have been having stalls. I called my doctors office and was told it is normal and some plateaus may last 2-3 weeks. I was told to continue to eat 5-6 times a day, hit my Protein goal, hit my Water intake and walk/exercise at least 40 minutes a day. Hope this helps.

I have not told anyone at my job.. i started eating the way I am now 3 months before surgery, just to get used to it so it didn't really feel like a change after. I only had a week vacation so it was surgery on Monday, home tuesday walk/drink rest of the week. Drive to my follow up on Thursday and went back to work Monday. I was fortunate enough to have NO complications and Did not need any pain meds ( not even tylenol in the hospital. )

I'm curious, whats in your lunch box?
Being sleeved put the brakes on eating out as much as I use to. So, I've found myself packing my lunch waaaaay more than I use to.
I bought a bag that I like and some colorful Portion Control containers. Which helps a lot.
So what have you done to help with packing your lunch? What are your favorites, must have's, cant stands and OMG-I-wish-someone-would-have-told-me-sooner! for your lunch?

I had my gastrologist and my surgeon confer because I had really bad GERD, had Barrett's, which is pre-cancer cells (which I had been treated for and have been clean of for three years). In addition, I had a hiatal hernia. We weighed all the options and the risks. My surgeon recommended the bypass, which I would not have done. Why? A good friend had a bypass and she constantly dumps, is as pale as a ghost, 80% of her hair has fallen out and she just looks sickly all the time. My gastrologist cleared me for the sleeve. The issue with the sleeve and esophageal cancer is one way to remove the cancer is they have to cut out the cancerous portion and pull up the stomach to meet the healthy esophagus. Since they remove a lot of your stomach, there won't be enough stomach to pull up. Someone may think I'm crazy for having the procedure done, but I have committed to yearly scoping and to stay away from the triggers.
Not everyone develops GERD who has the gastric sleeve. You just have to be diligent and follow your surgeon's plan - most have you taking something for the acid for the first 3-6 month. At my six month check up they told me to stop taking my ppi. I'll admit, I was terrified. Before surgery if I didn't take it I couldn't even drink Water. I weaned myself off of it and I have had zero problems and have never felt better.
I do believe a lot of it had to do with my diet change - no eating until I'm stuffed, minimal alcohol, no diet cokes, no chocolate or sweets, no fried foods, minimal spicy foods. Also, I quit eating after 7:00 p.m. Of course the huge weight loss helps a lot too.
I only told one friend about the surgery. Has my life changed? Absolutely! My entertainment isn't going out eating and drinking anymore. I thought I would be sad about it but I have found other things to do now. Hiking, biking, gym, kayaking, which are way more fun than eating and drinking and you feel good after doing them.
Is this surgery worth it?!?!?!? A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y! My regret, as many others will say, is I didn't do it sooner.
