I never was one to enjoy fish either, or at least the fish I could afford. I mainly just eat tuna and shrimp. I do eat a variety of Protein. I am 15 months out and occasionly have only the vegetables and fruit I like. By the time I have eaten my protein there isn't much room for anything else. I am not sure if I should be cutting back on protein to try and get more vegetables and fruit in or not. Will be meeting with a NUT tomorrow to go over what types of foods I should be eating at this stage.

As a child the only fish I ever ate was frozen fish sticks. Gross!! It made me think I didn't like seafood. My husband loves seafood an over the years I have tried different things and I have found out just how good most seafood is. Salmon, trout, tuna, crab, flounder, and cod are my favorites.
I would give it try you might like it. However, if I don't like something I don't plan on eating it post op, because like Outsidematxhinside said, we only have so much room for food and I want to eat what i like.

I am not a fish person or a vegetable person. I have not tried any of this stuff since my RNY surgery (almost 7 months ago). There is a reason that I never ate it before and I really am not interested in eating it now. I know that probably isn't the right thing to do/say but, it is how I feel.

I'm pretty much eating the same Proteins I ate prior to surgery. chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, crab and some white fish.
Pre-op I taught myself to like yogurt so I would have something to eat during the soft foods stage but after eating it for 3 weeks straight, I can no longer stand the stuff. The only thing I have forced down is the Protein Shakes and that stopped once I could eat enough real food to make my Protein goal.

I do not eat seafood or fish, but now post op have been considering trying it. Haven't eaten it since I was a kid. I need lean Protein options other than chicken and beef. Did your tastes change enough that you were able to start eating things that previously you didn't like?

I don't force myself to eat things I don't like, but I do think it's worth trying new things! Especially since it doesn't sound like you've had them recently.
We live on the west coast of Canada and have a freezer full of wild salmon and halibut. Both are delicious. A tasty and simple way to cook salmon is to spread some mayo on top and season with dill. Bake until flakey (but still moist, dry fish is no good!). My kids inhale it!

I've already tried some things I hated before, like pretty much all Asian food (my wife is Chinese) , and sure enough, from what I've tried already, I still hate it just as much post-op.

    @FatPharm
I just grabbed my book to check. Nothing is said about fats except they are essential part of a diet. Nothing about excluding butter and nothing about using sprays.
At 10 days post op I was still on full liquids. I didn't start soft foods until week 3.
My program doesn't do "stages", just weeks and months. I have a shopping list for each week, and suggested meals.

Where are you getting trigger fish in Illinois?

I wish I lived closer to the gulf sometimes, when we rent a condo for vacation we always scout a fish market - I love grouper, trigger fish, pompano
<sigh> I have to be content to get what I can in the freezer case.
Pic of trigger fish, has a sweet taste

Low carb, even extremely low carb, is perfectly fine for long term dieting. As long as you get enough Protein and fat your body will function perfectly well. It starts to break down and be a problem when people try to eat low carb and low fat, or they don't get enough Protein.
I personally have to stay below 20 net carbs in a day. That allows for a good amount of vegetables or fruit, as long as I choose lower carb fruits and veggies (such as green Beans and strawberries, two of my favorites).

When calculating Carbs one must calculate NET carbs. Broccoli is high in Fiber, so you take carbs-fiber=net carbs. Just my .02.

I would not have believed how much I like pre baked teriyaki tofu. Not the block in Water kind, but drier... in packages, kind of shrink wrapped I found it in the heath food store.
    Tastes do change I suppose

Just my personal opinion here, I stay away from fish from countries that I don't trust for food production, and tilapia is from China and they feed them filth in polluted Water. I also only buy gulf shrimp.
For mild fish I like flounder, cod, perch. Baked or pan seared, there are many good recipes out there to try - asian spices w soy sauce, blackened, lemon pepper, etc. And try a little hot sauce too.

Tilapia is pretty much the worst fish you can buy.
If you don't like fish, the strong fish flavor and scent of Cod is going to turn you off.
Perch bakes perfectly and is a good place to start.
Everything tastes good with enough butter.
The first 3 months post-op I basically ate nothing but baked fish. So yeah if you can enjoy fish, fish is a really good way to go. Easy to digest, lots of Protein, low calories.
Just don't try to force yourself into things you don't like you will just feel miserable and deprived and that isn't how you want to feel.

If you want a really MILD fish, I'd try some tilapia; it's the chicken of the sea, doesn't taste very fishy at all, and you can prepare it in many similar flavor profiles to the way you do chicken! If you want to be a bit more daring, I'd say go for some salmon; many people who don't like "fish" still like salmon, in my experience. It's very one of a kind!

Personally, I buy the sodium-free marinades at the grocery store (teriyaki is great!) and I just pour it on the fish, then pop it in the over. I don't have times etc on my mind, but if you just google you can find those easily enough!

My prefs have changed some, but mostly in the direction of NOT liking things I used to like; there's nothing I used to hate that I really love now. There are a ton of cheeses I used to enjoy, that are too stinky for me now. And a lot of chicken is rough on my tum, and basically things that make me feel gross after I eat them -- well, they now just flat out taste bad to me.

But you should DEFINITELY at least try things! I have to say that fish is one of the easiest things for me to digest, now...it's really great.

I'm a pretty picky eater, but I've always loved most veggies, Broccoli, green Beans, etc., no problem. I had gotten off the cereals a couple years ago trying to lose, knowing I'm insulin resistant/PCOS. I lived on Atkins/keto 20g net carbs daily for a year and a half and only lost a small amount and that's when I knew I needed bariatric surgery. A week post op, now I am lower than I have been in years.

Personally, my tastes and preferences changed after surgery.
I found myself craving healthy options that I once detested or didn't particularly care for prior to surgery such as steamed asparagus, broccoli, creamed spinach, and green Beans.
I also enjoy higher Protein seafood options that I had previously disliked such as mackerel cakes, salmon croquets, sardine fritters, blackened tilapia fillets, tuna, and trout.
Prior to being sleeved, my food staples that I couldn't live without included instant oatmeal, Honey Nut Cheerios, and frozen meals such as Lean Cuisines. These foods now disgust me.

Hell no. Things I didn't like before surgery I hate. Things I loved I really love. My taste buds have not changed, they are just more exaggerated and I have a different outlook on life. I don't do anything I don't want to do. If I taste something and it doesn't taste good I spit it out. I went some place a few weeks ago, and when my food arrived it was terrible. Luckily I paid before I was server, I took one bite, spit half of it into a napkin and spit it out.
We only get to eat so much and we only have so many calories, I can't force myself to eat things I don't like. I tried to like yogurt, nope still nasty and as useless as ever.
Since you are an adult you might find your tastes are more refined and you like seafood, but I don't think anyone should force themselves to eat things they don't like. Our stomach space is too precious

Yes I pretty much tried anything and everything that was high in protein and Low in carbs. There were many things I would not have eaten before but now find I like them. The same also goes for things I used to like that I don't like anymore. Your taste totally changes so try anything you never know

Thank you. My paperwork doesn't address Soups at all, except broth. This helps clarify things for me. I got the 98% fat free cream of chicken soup, but haven't tried it yet.

We're sleeve buddies! I was one week ago today, too. I've been allowed strained cream Soup "with no particles" since day 3 but have only tried it once as straining to a smooth consistency wasn't easy. Starting Wednesday (day 10), I'm allowed "pureed soup and add a dollop of sour cream for flavor." I'm encouraged to mix Protein Powder in the pureed soup.
