Flutterfly got a reaction from ShelbyMoore in Taking vitamins makes me nauseous!
    My last post op appointment we discussed Vitamins and I had a bottle of Bariatric Fusion (what I currently take) and a bottle of Barimelts. Doc didn't like the Barimelts, said not enough of what I need in it. My current regiment looks like this;

2 Bariatric fusion multis (mixed berry, while not great is the least offensive tasting) and I take a Barimelt Biotin in the am with them. Then after 2 hours I take my first Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate Chewy Bite. I actually love these in caramel. I take 3 a day total, each two hours apart. Followed by another 2 of the Bariatric Fusion Multis two hours after my last Calcium citrate. I take a barimelts iron+vitamin C every 3-4 days.

Some days when the multis hit my pouch I get some nausea. I find taking them and then sipping a hot beverage like tea seems to make this subside quickly.

I have been told Gummi's aren't for anyone who has had RNY, nor are flintstones.

I’m 9 weeks out and I find I have to keep a substantial variety in my diet. Foods will be ok one day and make me vomit the next. The only thing that’s consistent is fluids.

I'm more than 2 years out...
The first (and only) time I vomited was at 13 months out...yes, 1 year post-op. By the way, the vomiting was self-induced because I ate something that resulted in severe colicky pain.

I have eaten oatmeal my whole life and after the RNY it was fine while on the soft pureed etc then one morning I had it and it made me sick. I waited a few days tried again same thing. Three times it made me sick so the dietitian said put it aside for a while. Same thing with smoked salmon I love it. Had it with cottage cheese and Avo first bite made my start heaving. With the oatmeal it's fine again now. I'm thinking there were other things going on. I was badly constipated and got very sick. Turned out I had kidney stones. I had them out this week and so far all food has been fine. I had my first sandwich with soft bread in hospital and it was good.

I'm about 9 months out and this still happens to me. I'm really not sure what it is, but it's weird. I'm starting to sort of intuitively know when it will happen when I see or even think about a food. Sometimes I will see pizza (can be any food though) and feel fine and then have a piece and I'm fine. Other times I get a very faint feeling of queasiness when I see it and every time I've ignored that feeling I've had issues with either vomiting or heavy nausea. It sounds crazy, but I'm really starting to notice a pattern!

I’m 6 months out and this happens to me too. A scrambled egg goes down one day and the next it hurts and comes back up. Same with several things.

Flutterfly got a reaction from astarwalker in Snacking and eating even when I'm not hungry
The surgery fixed your body but it didn't fix your brain. Coping mechanisms can be hard to find. I manage the urge to snack mindlessly easier during the day than I do at night. First step is identifying it. You know if it's real hunger or not, and if it's not you need to find something else to do. Period, end of story. If it's during the day (light outside) I go for a walk, then I make a hot cup of tea in a mock bakery flavor like caramel apple to curb my craving. Finally, I sit down and work through whatever is causing me to feel like I need to cope. It's not always easy. I write a lot. I find it's hard to use my hand to shove food in my mouth if I have a pen in it.

My surgeon keeps all patients on omeprazole for a minimum of the first 30 days post op. You can purchase it over the counter and it's not harmful to take post op so I would hit the pharmacy and start taking 20mg a day while you're waiting for the doc to get back. If it gets better you have an indication of what your problem might have been. Regradless it needs to be discussed with your physician.

I have not tried pizza. Well, at least not a full traditional slice. I am 4 months out. I've been around family and friends when they had pizza. What I did was blot the grease off (the Jersey girl in me cries for this) and then just ate the cheese off a plain slice. That was once my team approved me for cheese. No pepperoni, sausage or anything like that. I will admit, I felt like a barbarian for throwing the crust away, because where I grew up, that is sacrilege. xD

I had to do six months also. It actually turned into almost a year from the start of the process. It flew by to be honest. And then i was on the other side and lost 24lbs the first month. Now im less than 20lbs from a normal bmi. I can't wrap my head around it most times. I still feel the same and feel that people still see me at my heaviest but they don't. I can't help but feel that everyone knows i was fat and judging me but its in my head. You'll get there hun. Just make sure you get the mental help on board sooner than later. It'll help loads. I know your anxious to get it over with. We all were lol. But enjoy having your full stomach while you can. I don't think many people here will tell you this, but before you start any intense pre op diet just enjoy eating, enjoy life, enjoy your normal stomach. No matter how much you need or want this, your going to miss your old stomach. But it's SO worth it. You'll be fine. This is a marathon. Just remember to breath and hang in there. It'll happen in no time. I hope i could help you feel a bit better. Sorry this was so long

jrmoseley that has to be extremely frustrating. I had to postpone my appointment with my nutritionist because we had two feet of snow and because of her schedule and mine I wont be able to see her for the first time until May. I'm hoping it's the only bump I have in the road. I still have to get in my required support group meetings too. My timing was terrible for starting this because we had a vacation planned that will take us out of the country for a few weeks right in the middle of everything.

    My personal story

I had RNY bypass on 10/10/16 following every rule to the T! 13 days post op I woke up in tears Saturday morning, was not able to tolerate a Protein Shake for the first time and it was accompanied by nausea, no vomiting. I went to the gym thinking it was gas pains, nope it got worse. I called my surgeon in tears and he told me to immediately go to the ER. I get to the ER I was in so much pain I was in fetal position and no pain killer would take my pain away! At this point they did blood work and a CT scan of my abdomen everything came back NORMAL! The doctor started saying it was something I had eaten wrong! (I was following my plan to the T) Well the doctor in the ER wanted to discharge me and send me home. I'm a nurse, I said no, something is wrong! Well the surgeon decided to keep me over night just for "observation" I slept the night pain free, when I woke up in the morning the pain had come back. At 12 o'clock the surgeon finally came to see me. At 4:30 in the afternoon I was being prepared for emergency surgery for a diagnostic laparotomy with possible vowel resection. Well it took the surgeon to open me up, to find that I had an intestinal stenosis....he had to reroute my entire bypass! Moral of the story, listen to your body! I could have died from that complication! And with every procedure there is always a risk of complication!

This is my experience with RNY:
I have heard that you can never take NSAIDS again. I have also heard they can be taken but with an acid reducer. Which is true? I started taking NSAIDS about six months out. I have no problem with them and do not need an acid reducer.

I have heard that the surgery fixes reflux and GERD. I have heard that people who never had heartburn pre-op now have it daily. RNY fixes reflux and GERD. The sleeve makes it worse. If you have reflux and GERD, do RNY.

I have heard that there are some foods you can NEVER eat again. I have heard that in time you can eat anything again just in moderation. Which is true? There are foods you will never WANT to eat again. They will be so unappetizing. With RNY, my taste buds and craving changed dramatically. For me, I find anything sweet (Cookies, cakes, brownies, candy) totally unappetizing, to the point of being nearly revolting. Fatty foods make me feel yucky so I have an immediate reaction to not wanting to eat them. I now crave "clean" food, and I've eaten more watermelon in the last 1.5 years than in my entire life. But yes, you can still eat them, eventually.

I have heard that there is a high percentage of addiction transfer. I have also heard that simply isn't true. This is true for some people.

I have heard sugar and fat cause dumping. I have heard neither of these things cause dumping or ymmv(your mileage may vary) They absolutely cause dumping. And it's very, very unpleasant.

I have heard everyone is constipated all the time. I have heard there is chronic loose stools. Again, this varies by person. I have the range, but I also have food allergies that can trigger different responses from by bowels. You really need to just see what works for you.

Hi everyone! I am at the absolute start of my journey and in the learning phase. I start with a mandatory seminar on the 7th which will likely be the beginning of a six month adventure prior to surgery if everything goes as planned. I feel like I have come across a lot of conflicting information and I am not sure if it's all just a case of your mileage may vary or if my sources are just bad. I'm hoping someone can straighten me out.

I plan on seeing a therapist in conjunction with the surgery because I realize that along with my body not cooperating it works in conjunction with my brain and my brain for lack of a better term is stupid when it comes to food and coping mechanisms. That's also why I asked about addiction transfer. I drink wine maybe a handful of times a year but I did read about some people who only drank socially like that and still developed issues. I asked about NSAIDS because before Aleve was available over the counter I had a prescription for naproxen sodium(generic aleve)for menstrual cramping that can get so severe on the day of my period I vomit. So I was curious about that. I do have GERD and currently take prilosec so I was wondering if it would be worse or better. I have primarily only been looking at bypass and not sleeve information because I know they have two different sets of rules. I'm just trying to get everything straight in my head and I tend to research as much as I can before I do something especially when it will be life changing.
