  1. Hello all, I'm looking for a memoir or fiction to read that will inspire me as I go through this journey. Do you know of any good memoirs, biographies, or novels about weight loss, WLS, or overweight characters overcoming adversity? Here are a couple of suggestions from me: Weightless: My Life as a Fat Man and How I Escaped by Gregg McBride. This is a memoir. Gregg lost over 100 pounds without WLS. I found his story inspiring. He also underwent extensive post weight loss plastic surgery. A lot of it all at one time (ouch). Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. This is young adult fiction about a quirky overweight teenage girl in the 80s finding a boyfriend and overcoming famiy difficulties. I loved it. I also remember reading a novel in the 90s that I'd like to re-read, but I can't remember the name of it. I believe it was about a lonely obese New York man who ate out alone a lot. He started losing weight by just walking for hours aimlessly. He explored all over the city and lost a bunch of weight. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Happy Sunday!
  2. I found this very touching. I hate to fly because I feel like this woman. A NSV will be flying to Alaska in September and not getting panicky about taking up too much room. What are your flying stories? https://futuretravel.today/what-it-s-like-to-be-that-fat-person-sitting-next-to-you-on-the-plane-85006e263778

    Confession at 16 weeks

I've done that, too. In fact, this weekend has been like that for me. Every time I focus on building the "getting back on my horse" skill/ habit. We can all get back on track when we stop judging the slips and move on. My NUT said slips WILL happen; it's all about the response to them. [emoji173]️

    Need Advice

I also meant to add that I had lap band surgery 17 years ago and really gave up 10 years in. It's easy to lose the North Star, so to speak, but it's never a lost cause.

    Need Advice

Wow, this is tough. My surgeon's office allows spouses/ family members to attend some "open" support groups. Does your wife's surgeon have such groups? If so, I'd suggest attending one as a member of her support system. If not, perhaps you could offer to go with her to see the surgeon's psychologist or nutritionist? Maybe that would help you better broach the subject? I think the most importantly thing, though, is to let her know you love her regardless.

    Back to work schedule suggestions

I had a protein shake before work, one at noon, and a small container of either Greek yogurt or Muuna cottage cheese in the afternoon. Don't forget to drink lots of water and be gentle with yourself! [emoji173]️

    When to worry about carbs?

I found that the focus on protein left little room for carbs from grains. Early on my carbs came from yogurt and cottage cheese. Regarding tracking vitamins, I use a great app called Round. Otherwise I think I'd likely not take everything. I also track my medication on it. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  16. I'm 5 1/2 months out and haven't lost any. Hope I'll be one of the lucky ones who gets a pass, but I'm not banking on it. I'm taking all the recommended supplements plus Biotin for regrowth. I'm also taking Biosil even though it's expensive because my hair stylist swears by it for recovery from hair loss/ trauma. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

  19. I'm five months out and exhausted and cranky, too. These hormones have been the worst part, I think. I sometimes feel like I'm white-knuckling it in regards to the hormones. I asked to be put back on birth control in hopes of finding some relief, but I'm not noticing any. I need to try yoga. I meditate, but I need to do more. At least we're all feeling it- we can't all be crazy, right? :-)

    DEPRESSED AND DISCOURAGED

That is totally awesome! I think I'd lost 27# at three months and was pretty proud of that. Don't let stories of people losing sixty pounds in two months discourage you! We all lose differently. You've got this!

    Five months out and exhausted

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. My nutritionist thinks I should keep the calorie level where it is but add in a serving of fruit and a serving of grains per day. I don't know what I think of that since it'll kick me out of ketosis. I'm consulting with my psychiatrist this morning bc it's possible that this is depression, which is something I've struggled with since childhood.
  23. Hello everyone! I'm five months post-op and have lost 55 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 pounds a month over the next three months if I can during the "honeymoon" period. I'm currently eating keto (high fat/ low carb/ meeting or exceeding protein goals) with an average of 1100 calories a day. I'm shooting for 1000 but 1100 has been the average for two weeks. I'm keeping paper food logs in addition to tracking in My Fitness Pal as part of new mindful eating therapy. On paper I also track when I eat, where I eat, my hunger level, cravings, and what the circumstances and feelings are. My therapist noticed that I wrote repeatedly how tired I felt even on days when I'd slept well the night before. Every two weeks I also have had something of a binge day (1500-2000 calories, usually high carb). The therapist told me that I'm exhausted and spiking with calories/ carbs like this because I'm eating too little and am going too many hours without eating. I eat three meals and a snack every day and am hitting my macros, particularly the protein. On that I range from 65-100 grams, usually landing at around 75 grams. Questions for you: is feeling so tired at this point normal? Is 1100 calories too low at 5 months? I'm in my late 40s and am 5'4". I haven't been exercising as much bc I'm so drained at the end of the day. I get in an average of 6,000 steps a day when I had been hitting 10-12,000 and eating about 1300-1400 calories a day. The therapist is encouraging me to tune in to what my body wants and eat what it wants, but I've always had a hard time knowing what it wants vs what I crave.

    Anyone ketogenic?

@resitton Thanks for your reply. I read about bad potty responses so am keeping to a low dose for now. I hadn't thought through the calories of MCT so will keep that in mind. I'm thinking of trying the bulletproof coffee. [emoji3] Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
