  1. I don't overeat in the way that I eat more than a serving (1/2 cup) but I do it every couple hours, and get in A LOT more calories than I should. It's nothing like pre-band, but it's definitely more than I should be doing. I know it's out of boredom. I am single and live alone, so I am trying to go out and do things and also exercise on the weekends. I swim on Saturday and do yoga on Sunday, and that at least helps create a calorie deficit, but I need some better strategies. I am staying relatively busy with a social life, but I am still home a lot more on the weekend days- cleaning, doing laundry and so forth. I had plans last night and I have plans for tonight and tomorrow. What do you think I should do? I can't be away from the house all weekend long and busy every minute!
  2. B- the inner portion of a Trader Joe's crustless quiche (not good for band, it was sooo chewy on the outside, so a waste of money) L- 12 almonds, 1/2 apple no skin S- 5 pita chips D- 1/4 cup of chicken salad, 1/4 cup of egg salad (grocery store deli) I then worked out for 45 minutes Late night dinner- the toppings off of an individual pizza, a few sips of wine This was yesterday- it was sort of a weird day. I was on a field trip w/ my class all day and then went out at night- I was gone all day and didn't plan my food very well, in fact, the only thing I brought to work was the breakfast, and then realized that I couldn't eat the lunch I had left in the fridge the day before (frozen) because we wouldn't be near a microwave. I grabbed foods I had available, so that was the almonds, the apple and the pita chips. When I got off work I was kind of hungry, but I didn't want to work out and get sick (which has happened when I didn't eat enough that day) so I went to the deli and got the egg and chicken salad. I could have probably just had one or the other. I worked out and met friends. We went to one of those movie theaters that serve food, but they had a very limited menu, so it was pizza or sandwiches. I picked the pizza because it was less expensive than the sandwiches and I can't eat bread at all. I also got the pizza w/ very light cheese.
  3. I made a very yummy dinner tonight! I took 7 reduced guilt pita chips (from Trader Joe's) 100 calories reduced fat cheese - 1 serving 100 calories 1.5 oz of canned albacore tuna mixed w/ fat free mayo 76 calories I topped the pita chips w/ tuna and then topped that with the cheese. It tasted EXACTLY like a tuna melt, one of my favorite all time comfort foods. It's a little high in calories, but not as high as an actual tuna melt! I burned 900 (!!!) calories today, so I will say I was VERY hungry when I got home! What other comfort food alternatives have you come up with?
  4. The other thing you could consider is staying at a motel or hotel for the day of your surgery.... that way you will be close to the doctor's office in case you need to go back (god forbid) for some reason.
  5. I had a kind of crummy food day! B- 1/2 banana S- 2 redvines (from someone at work) L- (It was a potluck day!) 6 rice crackers w/ smoked salmon on top 1 bite of carrot dipped in hummus 1 rice cracker dipped in hummus the inside of a small sliver of pumpkin pie 1/4 cup of tuna curry pasta salad (it was super good!) 1 slice of persimmon (It's good! I never had it before!) Afternoon snack- 22 pieces of candy corn (yes, I know!) D- 1 slice cheese and 1 serving of reduced guilt pita chips My total calories for the day was 975, so that was pretty good, but you never know how accurate those things are!
  6. I haven't been able to do any kind of tortilla, pita, etc. I do eat taco shells and they are relatively low calorie. I also like whole wheat bagel crisps. I pile them high with tuna salad or something. Wasa crackers are good too, but you have to get used to their blandish taste. I don't do the low-carb thing, just low calories and have been doing really well.
  7. They told me the same thing, but I have 12-14 hour days (when I am out of the house) and NEED to snack, especially with working out. I brought my food diary to my dietician and she looked over it. She said the snacking was fine, and especially since I keep such careful records of my calories, fat, Fiber, carbs, etc. (I use Calorieking.com, which is so easy and fun!) Anyway, she said that the 3 meals a day guideline is easier for most people because many people don't track calories much, and it keeps them from cheating. Since I snack and maintain my low calories, she said I was fine! A lot of people associate "snacks" with chips, candy, popcorn, ice cream and so forth! Not good things to snack on. They do base this stuff on research, so there is a reason to the strange things they tell us, however, if you can work around it and still do a good job and lose weight, then do it.
  8. The WW program called Core IS focused on lower carb, higher Fiber foods. You are very limited in the amount of bread, Pasta, rice, potatoes and so forth in a day. I had success with that program- for a month! I have been tempted to join just to show them that I can lose weight! I have gone and quit so many times I feel like I want to make lifetime because now with this TOOL I actually CAN! I say, if you want to join, join! If it will keep you accountable, then do it. I think you are doing great on your own! Do you need a fill? What does your doctor say about the weight loss so far?
  9. I might have posted this before- sorry. When you exercise do you add in calories to still meet your target calorie intake? If I am trying to eat 1000 calories, and lose 500 calories from exercise, should I add an extra 500 calories to fulfill my calorie goal? The RN at the office said no, but I haven't talked to the dietician about it. I kind of think I should! Some days after exercise and eating, I am getting in less than 300 calories. (I am feeling quite restricted now, and can easily get in 600-800 calories, but beyond that is difficult. I am eating pretty small amounts of food - 1/4-1/2 cup. The days I get in more are the days I eat chocolate! Oops!)
  10. It's past 8:00 pm and I have been burping since 12:00 noon! I had my first lean cuisine today for lunch (1/2 of it) and a chicken breast for dinner. I tried having some toast with the chicken breast, but immediately felt the stuck feeling after one small bite. Needless to say, I'm a tad worried. I called the consulting nurse (not the doctor's office) and took two Tums. Anyone else have this happen? FYI- The consulting nurse said burping could be a sign of a heart problem!
  11. Well I DID try a bit of bread today and guess what- it got stuck and HURT! It was grilled bread. I ordered a chicken sandwich on grilled bread, and only ate the grilled chicken breast inside, which is better for you anyway, but now I know!
  12. I can't IMAGINE being able to eat a foot long sub, or even one of their mini-subs....but I haven't had the guts to try bread. I haven't tried much that's on the no-no list! I can however eat chocolate and like the smooth feeling going down my throat. When I did try fried chicken skin, one bite and OUCH! So no, I can't eat what I want.
  13. I can't IMAGINE being able to eat a foot long sub, or even one of their mini-subs....but I haven't had the guts to try bread. I haven't tried much that's on the no-no list! I haven't had rice, or potatoes at all. I can however eat chocolate and like the smooth feeling going down my throat. I love Pasta now, and eat about 1/2 of a lean cuisine meal w/ pasta. It's funny because pasta is something I didn't like it very much before. I know it's not something I am supposed to eat, but it again is something that feels good to eat. I also really like chips, and those if chewed well are also easy for me to eat. I try not to eat them though of course! chicken and things like that get stuck now unless I chew super well. When I did try fried chicken skin, one bite and OUCH! So no, I can't eat what I want. I have learned there are things that really make me sick... chicken nuggets made me puke, fried chicken, scrambled eggs. I know I shouldn't even try fried chicken... but well, I guess I am nuts, because I still crave and want that stuff. I only had one bite!
  14. I try to do that all the time. I am supposed to wait an hour, but often it's 45 minutes. If I forget, I forget, but more or less I am trying to follow instructions.
  15. Can you feel it? Yesterday when swimming I had a lot of pain in my port area... I was a bit worried that something happened.
  16. I'm 5'4" and my highest weight was 275. I have never been able to lose this much through exercise and diet! I am SO glad I did the surgery, but only you can make the decision. Personally, I think your body sounds like you are in good enough shape (if you can sustain that kind of workout) because before my surgery I could barely walk up the stairs and now I work out all the time. I felt like the surgery was going to be the thing that helped me get to the next level, and I found I was right! I am motivated, I eat small, low calorie meals and am finding success! You can do it too!
  17. I felt like I had a migraine. By the time lunch came it went away and eating did help. I took a week off work (7 days of recovery w/ the weekend.) Seriously, I could have used MORE time off! I was not one of those people who was great 3 days after surgery. It took me about 2 weeks to feel normal again. I was very tired, achy, and so forth. With the amount of sitting I was doing at work, I also was having a lot of pain in my stomach/port area. However, now I feel like things are going great, and it was TOTALLY worth it!
  18. My body seems to do this... I stay the same, stay the same, and bam, overnight drop several pounds. It's ranged from 3 lbs-7 lbs. Last night I was at 230, this morning I was 225! (This is great because I haven't weighed 225 since my senior year of college.) BUT I have a RAGING head ache. I am at work and don't know how I will make it through the day. I am drinking A LOT of Water in case it's due to dehydration. I also took 3 advils. Does this happen to anyone else? Do you think it's due to the rapid weight loss?
  19. I'm feeling like this might be VERY good restriction! I lost 5 lbs this week!
  20. BTW- the wings are skinless and not fried! But thanks for your comments. If I was not so lazy about cooking, I would probably grill my own chicken and veggies!
  21. I had my second fill last week. I am just trying new things and find a lot of what I am trying makes my stomach hurt a little bit. (like taco shells, ground beef, tomato skins) The one thing I have been able to eat fairly well is chicken wings. I can't eat all of them, and if they are too chewy I have to spit them out. 2 wings fills me up! I don't even have room for veggies or anything else. Yesterday I ate: 2 wings for Breakfast 2 wings for lunch 1/4 cup of refried Beans for dinner Is this normal? How can I get in Fiber, fruit, veggies, etc?
  22. They scheduled me for a fill on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and then I cancelled it. I don't need to be restricted any more on that day! I would rather enjoy the holiday than be sick or something. It's not about the food, but you never know how your body will react to a fill-- what if you get sick or can't swallow at all?! Do you know how IMPOSSIBLE it will be to reach your doctor or the doctor on call? (I use to answer phones for doctors on call and none of them want to be bugged on a holiday.) Cancel that appointment and schedule another one. If you really don't think you need the fill, than waiting a week or so won't matter. But do it soon... I know my doc is booked up for fills weeks and weeks in advance.
  23. I think it's about finding an exercise that you ENJOY more than anything. I have had gym memberships and gone on walks, and even ran when I was much thinner... but swimming is the exercise I like best. I plan on adding weights eventually as well. I swim Monday: laps 30 minutes; class 45 minutes, Wednesday: laps 40 minutes; class 45 minutes, Friday: laps 30 minutes; class 45 minutes, Saturday: laps 45 minutes. On Sunday I am signed up for a yoga class but I keep missing it! I AM GOING TODAY! The class is an hour and fifteen minutes, but it's super low-key and not really "exercise" it's more like a meditation and stretching class. I'm not exercising EVERY DAY right now, but I am doing well over an hour on most of the days when I do. I plan on swimming laps on T/Th pretty soon. I just need to work up to it.
  24. My doctor was saying that if the band is too tight you will make poor food choices because those are the foods that feel good going down! Maybe you need an unfill?! Also, for everyone else... 2-3 cc is hardly anything! My doctor filled me up to over 5 on the first fill because he said that most people don't have any restriction until that point. I had my second fill at 6 and feel much more restricted now! I can still drink a lot of liquids, but a couple ounces fills me up. Wait until you get 5-6 cc and then decide. Sometimes people need up to 8-10 cc to be perfect.
  25. Raising Cain AND The Pressured Child by Michael Thompson (non-fiction) The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie The Zombie Survival Guided by Max Brooks The Birthday of the World by Ursula LeGuinn (short stories) On of my students recommended Twilight and I will be reading that soon! As soon as a copy is available at the library! I am always in the middle of a bunch of books, but I get bored easily so I read a few at a time. I have to read what suits my mood.
