I too work as a nurse in hospital and one of the reasons I had the surgery was so I could continue work in a healthier state and be a fully useful part of the team....I guess I'm fortunate that my colleagues have been so supportive. You would be surprised just how many health workers have had bariatric surgery where I work. Just remember "to look after others you need to look after yourself first". You need to forge ahead....you will never regret doing this for yourself

Hi everyone. So far I have chosen not to post pics etc of my weight loss. But now I'm ready.....
I have lost over 44kgs since October last year.
However, more importantly being a chronic renal patient, and having rheumatoid arthritis and AS....the bariatric surgery was a godsend for me. My renal function has improved and rheumatoid and AS not currently causing any concern either...
I can only hope my story helps to inspire others....
My sleep apnoea is resolving as well.
Looking forward to continuing this positive power of recovery that I'm on.....

Since May, I've gone from a size 22 to a size 12. I follow my eating plan pretty rigidly, and I do Tae Kwon Do four times a week. It's a great combination of flexibility, strength, and balance. Plus, I get to hit things.

If the lifestyle changes and healthy choices were easy for us we wouldn't need surgery to begin with. A significant number of people cheat their way into the process and don't use the time preop to overcome behavioral/psychological issues. There's a high incidence of eating disorders, addictions and mental illness too. Many people have an enabling support system, people who support their bad habits or fail to support good habits. I had to work diligently to change habits in advance and did not set my date until all necessary changes had been achieved and successfully maintained. Make use of your resources, set goals and enlist your support system to support those goals. This is an opportunity. Some people will seize it and some will waste it. It's all about choice.

@@Nymea How is your progress now that you're around 3-months post-op?
I just reached a "normal" BMI myself this week (about 7 months post-op, and 8.5 months after starting pre-op diet). I started at 333lbs (151kgs), and was 159lbs (72kgs) this morning.

I had mine 3 weeks ago today! YAY! My arms look amazing and they are still a bit swollen. I found a fantastic surgeon who gave great contour. My little girly biceps look fabulous an you can even see the tendons where my arm bends and I am still quite swollen.
I am including some pics for you. Sorry, for some reason when you post these they turn sideways. The first is pre op and the second batch is 2 weeks post op. I am even further along now but waiting to have my dressings removed on Monday.

    2 weeks After:

If you want to see the actual incisions, I would be happy to send them to you in a personal conversation but I don't want to gross anyone out. The cost of mine was $5950

Funny...i was going to ask a similar question. I'm 2 weeks out and I hear people who hv lost 20 some lbs and I lost maybe 3 or 4 the 1st week and 0 this week....its discouraging. Even though I KNOW all the right things (everyone's different, it's a marathon, give your body a chance) I'd just like to see some reward for all the Water drinkin', Soup slurpin' says that I've been trying so hard with. I'm sure you all understand. I'm glad about this forum because there's so much support. And when I get hung up on that I can move on after reading some encouraging words and read some other great info on another topic!

I weigh in about once all week however after reading some of the replies above I may move to once a month I am starting to come at peace with the idea that it will come off when it comes off I have lost significant amount of weight I am down 53 pounds since surgery September 13th however I know one of my downfalls will be freaking out when the scale and it will go out from time to time hang in there keep focused and always remember that you are 10 steps ahead of where you were prior to surgery

I have not experienced steady weight loss and am 4 mths out. I just roll with it because there is no need to add stress by worrying. We can't control our bodies but we can control what we put it them.

Hey sleeve buddy. Please don't worry about why the scale isn't moving. You are doing everything they asked of you with Protein intake and Water. You aren't eating chicken wings or steak.
Give your body a minute to adjust to the fact that you are taking in such a low level of calories. Everyone's rate of loss is different at this point-none any better than another. A wise friend of mine reminded me that this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.
Slow and steady beats a jackrabbit start anytime!
Keep on doing what's right and it will catch up with you on the scale.

I also have FIBROMYALGIA, OSTEOARTHRITIS and the beginning of RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. I had my RNY on July 2, 2013. I lost 132#'s in 6 months. I have maintained my weight loss with just a 8# gain. So I have maintained 124#'s for 2 and 1/2 years. I am able to walk which I do 3 to 4 times a week and walk 4 to 5 miles each time. I would have never been able to do this before!! Everything about my health has improved. I was on 100units of insulin 2 times a day plus 500mg of Metformin 2 times a day. I use to take 12 different medications now I take 4, Three High Blood Pressure medications, which I had hoped to get rid of but I just can't seem to let my stress go. If you figure it out let me know. 1 for my thyroid. Plus my Vitamins. Everything is totally AWESOMENESS now!! One of the best things II ever did for myself. Good Luck Get out there and LIVE your life to the fullest!!

I have RA as well, and years of prednisone and the inability to move caused huge weight gain.
Research and anecdotal evidence showed RA pts who had bypass showed signs of remission. So, I had it and have been symptom free since March 23!!
    Good job!!!
I'm down from 283 to 160, almost to goal!

So much inspiration tonite (This morning)! I have had chronic pain for many years with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. I was able to lose 75 lb on my own several years ago and hv kept it off. Due to pain and fatigue unable to continue losing. This will be my shot at a better life too. It makes me so happy to hear the health related success that so many of you have had. I'm looking forward to some as well!!

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery primarily to improve my health. I am 3 years out now and still free of diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD and other problems which plagued me prior to surgery. It is so great how these issues can be put to bed by this surgery. I have even been able to cut my asthma medicine in half.
    Congratulations on your improved health.
