I drink at least one high Protein shake a day, because I can't get the Protein in either. I do eat protein Snacks, meals, but I am eating so little of it, it is so hard to get it all in. Also, there are many people that think this is the easy way out, but we know that is not true and most people do not know enough about WLS and what you need to do. There are many things you have to give up, pre op and post op. If you can't do that, it is not going to work. My mother in law wants my brother in law to do this, but he is a drinker. You can't drink heavily with this surgery and you have to give it up for a while. There are so many things you must do in order to be successful. Definitely not easy. My surgery was in August and I am still learning what kinds of food work for me and what ones do not. I am 52. Overweight since I was 11, there was a short time during my teens to about age 20 that I maintained a normal weight. After that, the weight issue got worse each year. I already see how this was definitely the right decision to make for me.

Hi. It is definitely different for those of us who are over 50. I like to hear from people my age because we sometimes lose differently than younger people and I clearly see how my skin is not going to snap back like it did when I was young. Our metabolism is definitely slower. I am still relatively new in this journey. I was sleeved in August.

I had the same issue. I rarely looked at myself in the mirror and when I saw myself in pics, I was absolutely disgusted. I have not been in pictures for many years. I had the sleeve in August and I am down almost 70 lbs and I still don't take pictures yet. I want to lose about 30 or 35 lbs more, but I really need to improve my self esteem. I am 52 and have struggled with weight since I was 10. People have not always been nice about it either. Good luck. You are going to do great.

I stay away from the bad carbs, but I have not eliminated them completely. I mostly try to make sure I am getting in all the Protein, which can be very difficult .

littlelamb3 got a reaction from ella37 in did anyone NOT lose tons of hair?
I have lost some hair, but nothing noticeable. My Hair loss started a few years ago when I had a thyroidectomy for cancer though. I don't believe this surgery has made it worse, at least not yet. I am 5 months out.

@@littlelamb3 I too have the raw veggie craving. I can't wait till I can enjoy a good salad. It's mainly spinach and cucumbers that sound the best right now. But I miss fresh strawberries and bananas as well.

I had the sleeve in August at age 52. I had life long issues with weight. My biggest problem was Portion Control and it has helped tremendously with that. I have not had any major side effects. I did have the runs in the beginning and at times now I have Constipation. The thing you have to remember is there is no more sitting down and having a huge meal with a dessert anymore , or even a normal size portion. Those days are over. If I go out to eat, I can barely eat any of it and I take most of it home. At this point in my journey, having small meals/snacks throughout the day is what works for me. I eat healthy and focus on Protein. You are going to have to take Vitamins for the rest of your life as that is what they told me. You are also always going to have to choose foods that are high in Protein. As far as how much you are going to lose, it is hard to say. You are a lot younger than I am and I also do not have a thyroid, so that was going against me. I was losing about 10 lbs a month. I chose this surgery because I had health issues and I wanted to try and live a longer life. Good luck,

Yes. I had the same thing happen to me right after surgery. I was actually hungry for a while, until I got onto solid foods and it got better.

I just filled out my intial paperwork for surgery in Mexico! I've requested a date for Feb 3, 2017!
I really appreciate that there is a forum for those of us over 50! I know this will be a very different journey for us than it is for 20-30 somethings...
I would love to be bariatric buddies with y'all!
My weight now is about 315, HW was 325, my goal is 150, that way I should have some room for movement of about 5 +/- at the end
    Looking forward to this journey!

I was pre approved before I even went to my first visit with the surgeon. That was in April. By July after finishing the program, the paperwork was submitted and approval was very fast. That was the end of July and I had a mid August surgery.

I would find another PCP. I do not understand why your doctor would say you don't need it. My doctor was happy about me having it. I only told a few people about my surgery, and all of them were supportive. Even if they were not supportive, I was still having the surgery. I was 5'4 and 256 lbs and after a lifetime of weight issues, I knew I could not lose w/out help.

i struggled with fatigue through month 3. and as counterintuitive as it sounds, what seems to have finally gotten me through is to literally just power through and amp up your exercise even when you feel too tired to exercise, do it anyway.

littlelamb3 got a reaction from iloveorganicmilk1 in drinking protein shakes after surgery..?
I drank 2 Protein shakes right after surgery and just sipped liquids all day long(creamed Soups, shakes, Water or sugar free pops and jello) I don't know how much I was taken in, I just drank what I tolerated. I had hair loss to begin with because I had radiation for thyroid cancer and it seemed to be an issue with my hair. I have not noticed and significant Hair loss post op. I am nearly 8 weeks out now and drink one shake a day.
