My surgeon said Decaf was fine to start right away. Wants me to wait 3 months before I have any caffeine.

kimberb reacted to Goodchoices in Chewing gum
I used to chew gum all the time. However, I was definitely advised against it on my post-op plan. For me, I made some lifestyle changes in conjunction with the surgery. I figured the risk of swallowing gum and causing problems with my surgery (and the time energy and money invested )was not worth the temporary pleasure benefit of chewing a stick of gum. Because of that I'm OK with not chewing gum and can have a happy life without it by focusing on other things.

Ok first I have an awesome surgeon Dr. Tillquist at Sweedish Medical Center in Englewood Colorado. This has made a huge but healthy impact on my life. I can actually see the pounds quickly melting away. The surgery has reversed my type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I'm very excited to also loose my sleep apnea as well.
I'm very thankful to my surgeon and my primary care physician and my wife who all have supported me through this whole process.

The surgery will work if you follow the program.
You will lose weight. It might be slow (and no, 15-20 pounds in month 1 is not slow, no matter how often people freak out about it). The problem is almost always maintenance. So, start now by making the lifestyle changes you need.
Don't want to fail? Make the most of your pre-op time. Don't have food funerals. Find an exercise you enjoy and start. That doesn't have to mean getting a gym membership, either. Educate yourself on the surgery and nutrition. Start tracking your food now--every single bite.
You will lose weight. How much you lose and how long you keep it off depends on your commitment and the changes you make to your lifestyle.

Imagine, instead of surgery, your life change is an adoption. You are going to the hospital to pick up a new little baby. Think about that baby and her needs. You want her to grow up strong and healthy. Do you feed her baked potato or french fries? Baked chicken, or fried? Ice cream or greek yogurt? (And the great thing is this baby will do what you tell her to!)

Surgery gives you a new chance at life. The baby you are feeding is yourself.

Christians experience a spiritual rebirth when they become believers... wls patients get a rebirth of their own.

It will be a new day, but it will be up to the patient to make the most of it.

I'm a week post op. So far I've been very blessed and haven't experienced any nausea or gas pains. I am very tender around abdomen and tired. I would say schedule vacation for after vacation. I don't think you will get to enjoy it right after surgery. You'll be out of your comfort zone. Want to sleep. Riding in car for long distance will be no fun. You won't enjoy vacation and the rest of the family probably won't either.

my name is Katie and I am almost 2 months post op. I try to take selfies after surgery and there are days that I just don't feel like I'm making progress. I had ryn December 20th and for me this has been the best decision even though I have had some issues with food I still wouldn't change my it.

This is all normal. The swelling has subsided. Like mentioned above, yogurt will go down easily. That's why it is often allowed during the liquid phase. Once you start eating more solid foods, you will feel the restriction more. Also, some days you will feel fuller quicker than others. I will measure out 3 oz of meat. Some days I can eat all of it and think I could probably eat more. Other days I can't even eat 2 oz. This is why I measure everything I eat! When I get too full or eat too quickly, I always get the hiccups. I can use my sleeve as a guide most of the time, but not all of the time. Measure, measure, measure.

kimberb reacted to orionburn in 1 week post-op, want to eat and feeling regretful
I know it can be tough. Look at it this way - it's like being an alcoholic and having to face up that you can't go hang out in bars anymore. Yes, food is something comforting and what we are used to, but it's also the root of why we had to consider having surgery to help fight the battle. The other day I had a realization that realistically I'll never go to an all you can eat buffet again. it would be a complete waste. Does it make me a little sad? Sure, but when you sit back and think that sort of thing is why we have such an obesity problem in this country to begin with.

As to foods that I really miss I know most I'll be able to enjoy some again in due time. For me I obsessed over quantity rather than quality. Binge eating was my biggest battle and needed something to combat it, so that was my reason for choosing surgery.
It isn't uncommon to second guess things, especially during this period where we are so limited on what we can have. Way I look at it is that I've punished my body for a good 35 years so a few weeks of penance on my part is going to be worth it in the end!

Hi there, if you haven't seen one of my posts from today. I need to let you know I had my surgery 2/9.
So I've weighed myself every day for a long time. It's a habit or an addiction. You pick. So today when I got up I almost weighed myself. I stopped in time. I do believe I got the shakes and broke out in a sweat. Lol
I've sworn to only weighing once a week. My weigh in day will be Thursday's. That's 4 long days away. I sure hope I can stick with it. Hubby may have to hide it from me. So if some strange lady knocks on your door asking if she can weigh herself on your scale, nicely tell her it's not Thursday yet. Lol

I lost 20 pounds the first month after my surgery. BUT...as anyone here on the BP forum will tell you, everyone is different. There's no magic number, no 'typical' weight loss the first month.

I took and am taking my pain meds. I'm a real wimp. If I can avoid pain I do. So I'm a real wimp. I had my surgery 2/9. I took pain medication regularly while in hospital. So I wasn't in pain. But my tummy was and is tender. I was released from hospital yesterday. The nurse recommend having some pain med before leaving. Which I did. I tried not taking any after that. I'm worried about Constipation. Was released from hospital around 11:00 by 6 pm I had to take pain med. So my plan is to continue to take it today and try not to take it tomorrow. I was also on anti nausea meds while in hospital and I didn't experience any nausea. If you can tolerate medication I would highly recommend it. Why suffer if you don't have too.
