Hello all, today it has officially been four months and one week since I had VSG. I went from a size 24 to a size 14 pants and a 3-4X shirt to a 1x. I started out over 300 pounds and have lost 80 lbs. I was bigger than the Before picture I have posted but I didn't take any pictures after that one. The after pictures were taken today I still have about 70 pounds to reach goal but I am taking it one day at a time. I am a work in progress!!

Omg so I progressed today a stage diet wise. I am now allowed toast. So I made a slice and ate a couple bites with a few bites of beef stew. BIG MISTAKE! I'm miserable. Take it from me, just because the paper says you can have it, listen to your body. I will be going back to puréed for a few days. I don't want this feeling again. On a more positive note, the first person told me I look like I've lost a bunch of weight today! She was the first one to notice. (I've lost 24 lbs) it felt good to hear. Also, my clothes are so baggy but at the rate I'm losing, I don't want to buy anything new.

Jane ... I hear ya! I'm 44 and every time I try a new plan of action something gets in the way, knee goes bad, hip hurts, swimmers ear, plantar ficitis etc... of course I have my tiny doubts in my head that say ... did you try everything out there, did you really give that last diet a chance .... I know I have done my best and now it's time for help (meaning sleeve surgery). I'm excited that you made the choice too. Sorry I high jacked your thread. Anyone interested in opening a secret FB GROUP for Dec Sleevers? I just need one other person to open the group and we can add folks who are interested from this forum.
I'm not very familiar with this forum and I spend a lot of time on FB. I think it will be easier to share information on FB. Let me know if anyone is interested. I'll open the group.
    Thanks!!

OK, so I had my very first consultation with Dr. David Ward in Morristown New Jersey he will be my surgeon.
He addressed all my questions and my husbands as well. We had pretty common questions like, how long does the surgery take, healing time, what to expect, any complications that could arise, mortality rate etc.
The first thing he asked me was what type of surgery was I interested in. I did not let him know right away that I wanted the sleeve.
I asked what he thought would be better.
He let me know that the sleeve would be better for me. Which is what I wanted to begin with.
He informed me that bypass would not be in my Best interest. Also, he does not like to perform bypass surgery on smokers.
I asked him how long I need to be smoke-free in order to have surgery. He said, obviously it is better to be totally smoke free but, he does understand how hard it can be. He did say that I can use nicotine replacement such as the patch he wasn't too happy about vape only because there's not too much information on it. He did recommend that I at least cut back even if I don't use the nicotine replacement.
I also asked about liquid diet and what I need to do now to start preparing. He said we definitely want you to cut back calories and carbs.
you will be meeting with a nutritionist who will help you with that.
My husband asked when would I need to start the liquid diet the doctor informed us it would not be necessary until much much closer to surgery. He said it is not mandatory that I lose weight just not to gain any weight but it would help if I lost obviously it would make surgery go easier.
So my first of three appointments with the nutritionist will be on the 26th of this month. I still need to make an appointment with a Gastro and the psychiatrist.
I did ask why does it seem to vary so much as far as everyone's diets preop and wait times. He said is far as wait times go, that's the insurance requirements. Pre-op diet really depends on the individual some of us are not as heavy as others. Some of us have different issues Healthwise. That's why it varies so much from person to person. For example he already told me that he is sending me home after surgery with a blood thinning injection. Most of you probably didn't need that or won't need that. my BMI is very high (63.7)
He did warn me already not to compare what I can tolerate and what's in my program to what others have.
Oh on a final note, I mentioned that we have a few family events coming up and that I'd be heading into NYC and probably eating my head off. He laughed and said get it out of your system now because once the nutritionist appointment starts it becomes very serious.
So that was my very first visit to a bariatric surgeon.

Hello my second family! Just had my first consultation and it was wonderful! Lots of information and I already have pre op appointments set up for September and October. Fingers crossed for December 26th surgery date (it's my 45th birthday too)!! I wanted to ask if people here tend to take excedrin for headaches? I hear a lot of heavy people tend to take it and I am 1 of them. Almost daily. I asked the doctor and he didn't seem to feel it's a problem BUT I think I should ween myself off sooner than later. What do you guys think? To let you know ... I take only 1, almost daily, for the caffeine of it (not a big coffee drinker). Let's be nice with your comments too please. Thanks in advance...

Great question! I have to be honest and say that the first three months was a struggle for me. You completely break up with food, and once your able to move around more you feel great. I would definetly do it again if I had to. Actually, I wish I had done it years ago. As for things I can do now....what a difference. I feel great!! I've lost about 56lbs. I can now cross my legs, purchase clothes out of a regular store. My stamina has increased, no more pre-diabetic stage, no more high blood pressure medication. My skin is now glowing!! I go more places and participate in more activities because I'm no longer embarrassed by my weight. You will feel like a new person. And all of the things krakow57 mentioned above. This site is very supportive. I don't think I could have gotten through those first few months without the helpful advice of others on this site. Do it for yourself!!! You will be happy you did.

Yes, like @@LisaMergs wrote, it is a valid pre op question.
    For me:
    No more fatty liver
    No more pre-diabetic stage
    Feel lots happier
My face looks 10-15 years younger, and my eyes are "bigger", basically not surrounded by swollen face anymore
I can cross my legs, touch my toes
My bra is 2 sizes smaller and I don't need an extender anymore to do my bra up.
I can wear clothes I couldn't wear for few years, and no longer live in sarongs
My food costs are a 1/3 now to what they used to be before
    My back ache is gone
    My hair is healthier
I can look in the mirror again
There is more room in my shower now
    I eat healthy again
My feet and ankles are no longer swollen
I actually have shapely legs and thighs now
My bottom is much smaller and I can wear nicer undies again
I am no longer snoring. I never snored before I became obese
I still have 22Ib or so to lose, but I am seeing a big difference now, after 6 months post op

I'm still moving through this journey but how quickly the changes happen is amazing! I just had my surgery 3 and half months ago and I've already lost 70 pounds from my highest weight.....changes include a lot of the same things mentioned by @LisaMergs.....and in addition I'm walking on average about 10 miles a day now and am actually letting my granddaughter teach me to jog....I'll be 57 years old in December and have never jogged in my life.....I honestly can't believe that I'm able to do it!!!

Oh sweetie! That's not being nosy, it's a very valid pre op question. You will have tons of responses but for me this-
    - I can walk. And walk a lot!
    - I can touch my toes and cross my legs and reach around my back to fasten my bra
    - I am no longer tied to the "living to eat" modality, rather I eat to live. This is key, because more often than not, I don't experience hunger and I need to remind myself to eat
    - I can tour college campuses with my children and this one is huge because last year with my son I could not and it really became a focus for me during this process. There is nothing worse than taking your child to see colleges and sitting around waiting while they are touring.
    - my chronic conditions have literally disappeared, including my rheumatoid arthritis - the disease which got me to obese to begin with
-I FEEL GREAT! And have more self confidence than I've experienced in years
    - I'm much more social than I've been in years
-I can "keep up" with anyone!!
    - I can shop off the rack anywhere now
There are so many more, we call them NSV's- non surgical victories- things that you don't realize -or that you were missing it- until after it happens and the light bulb goes off.
    Good luck!

    Surgery on 8/11 -
I was so worried about starting the school year on 8/29 right after surgery. I was very concerned that I wouldn't be ready, but you know what? I was ready! I handled the stress and exhaustion and feel really good. I started yoga again this week and have been twice and am fully back in the groove of life.
I went to my first post-op on Friday and am down 10 pounds. I have NO pain, NO reflux, NO vomiting. This has been so easy for me and I'm so thankful!
I am tracking all foods on My Fitness Pal and am hitting around 800 calories a day and 85 g of Protein.
Anyone wondering if this life is for you? YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!
