I was rethinking my quick answer. The answer is still no, but I also wanted to support you in rethinking your relationship with food. We all need to re-establish our relationship with food. For many of us food is our reward, our celebration, our "I earned it". Your desire to Celebrate with ice cream is what our norm is but we have to look at food with a different perception post surgery. Food is what we need to sustain our new healthy living. Our reward is our health and being able to do things better and the ability to do new things. I want to wish you a happy birthday. Please Celebrate your birthday with a wonderful activity with those you love. Now that's a celebration!

@@okcbaby I'm only pre-op (day 8 of liquid diet) but it's very clear to me that head hunger and cravings are real and still an issue for most after WLS. If not - we wouldn't be seeing far too many posts talking about "cheating" so soon after surgery. I went to therapy to learn how to deal with these exact issues. It's helping pre-op - and I assume will help post-op. I think once I can eat food (even mushy) - it will be much easier to satisfy my cravings with healthy alternatives. Only being able to have Protein Shakes, broth and Water is a different story. I've actually been testing myself now - knowing that it will help post-op. I made a delicious smelling pot roast for my SO the day my pre-op diet started. The next day he made himself shaved steak sandwiches (one of my favorites) and even the ketchup smelled good. :-) I stopped to pick up pizza for him Friday and 5 Guys on Sunday. He went out and got a pizza again yesterday. I made a really good veggie broth yesterday and it tasted incredible. I am managing much better than I expected and again - I think this will give me a head start post-op.

cbonet reacted to bdejong in How long did it take you to lose 100 lbs?
Starting weight was 353. Lost 100 pounds by 4.5 months. Still averaging 2 lbs a week with mild exercise and sticking with the eating plan my nutritionist gave me. This means no cheating. I will NEVER go back to my old habits or weight.

You need to try to start re-establishing your relationship with food BEFORE you have the surgery. And part of that is NOT cutting yourself off from social events because of food and drink. Go. See people. Have fun. And either eat something that will work with your current eating plan, or eat before/after you go and just not have something there. It won't be the end of the world if you don't eat, and people that care about you won't care about the fact that you are not eating.
I lost 99 pounds during my six-month insurance-required pre-op diet program. Nothing prepared me to deal with the physical and mental demands of surgery more than that. I ate out all the time. I just ate what my eating plan would allow (at the time, low carb/high protein/high healthy fat). Now that I am post-op, I am still on liquids. Last night, my partner and I met up with an old friend over on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We went to dinner. They ate steamed seafood. I drank a Premier Protein shake. We had an amazing time.
My recommendation is to take this six week diet you have to do and make the most of it. Trust me, the mental part of the entire thing is the most difficult.
Also, I want to echo what the others have said regarding your husband's weight situation. Be patient with him. Chances are once you get going, he'll get on the train, too. My partner has lost over 80 pounds in the time that I have lost 114 pounds.
    Best wishes to you!

Thank you so much, everyone! I do three small meals a day with one Fiber one snack (on occasion) . I don't eat any bread or fried foods. I only drink Water, skim milk and Decaf coffee. I try to watch my fat grams in everything I eat. I was a huge soda drinker before and I haven't had a soda (or caffeine) in 4 months. I definitely think that helped jump start my weight loss. I eat lots of turkey, grilled chicken and fish, veggies, cheese, Beans etc.
I feel like a new person and I am regaining happiness that I lost years ago.

Agree way too many carbs. A lot of us are carb resistant. Check the sodium on the old shakes too. Could also be retaining Water.

I am new, and I use search everytime before I ask myself. The searching function isn't always the best. I'm sure it all gets old (especially the can I eat pizza, cake, etc.) But I know that I really appreciate it and I'm sure others do too.

One of my favorite places in the whole world is Keeneland racecourse. I haven't been able to go to the races in years. It has been hard, especially since I moved to central Kentucky four years ago, to be so close and yet know I couldn't navigate the seats, walking, stairs, distance from bathrooms, etc.
I was able to go to opening day on Friday! It was a beautiful day and I was able to fit in the reserved seats, had no trouble making it to the bathrooms and was able to walk a good bit (even though I used the handicap shuttle to get back to the car ---- I am not on that good of physical shape, yet).
I am even planning to try to go back again during this meet.
By the way, I had burgoo for lunch.< /p>

    Let me ask you this...

What would be a better happy birthday gift to yourself? Complying with your surgeon's diet to ensure your better health or a few bites of ice cream cake (on liquids!!)? Only YOU can decide what gift YOU are worth.
