MissJDVSG reacted to Noneyo in What a concept...
There is just something so peaceful about losing weight and knowing that you have a permanent tool to help you forever. Finally having control is such a new concept for me. Getting rid of clothes in my closet confidently knowing that I'm done with that life. My brain is changing and I am so positive now that I've got this. This has always been a problem for me and it's held me back in so many countless ways that I had to sit down and think about it all. The list of ways I held myself back was so long and it made me sad. There is such shame in losing and gaining your whole life and I have lost and gained MY ENTIRE LIFE! I know no one outside of us on this journey can understand why, like REALLY why, we did this. This is so mental and I'm not stupid enough to think this is just a weight thing. This is no different than a drug addiction and we have a reason (a different reason for all of us I'm sure) that we do it and our brains need to transition as well! What a beautiful day it was today as I went through my clothes and confidently tossed them for donation. I'm never going back! I'm growing as I shrink and I like it!

MissJDVSG reacted to Samara1974 in So - this is what hungry feels like?
My hunger now presents as lower back pain. At first it is a bit of an ache and gets stronger if I don't eat. If I can't eat it then turns in to drooling, dizziness, nausea, and headaches (it is very attractive.)

yes, exactly. Like you, I need to EAT NOW when I get hungry or it is accompanied by a feeling of light-headedness and fatigue. Go Figure. Like you, I wasn't expecting to "feel" hunger, let alone hunger pains but I guess we will get used to it.

It's Day 3. I was sleeved wed morning (7am). I've had no problems with gas, walking or getting my liquids down. The only time I experience any discomfort is when I drink too fast. However, I can sip tons of liquid with no issues. Could I have mess up this early out? I'm concerned cause I can drink as much as I want with no issues at all...

MissJDVSG reacted to Daja in Winded more easily after anesthesia?
Any shortness of breath after a surgery shouldn't be ignored and you should call your surgeon. While anesthesia can stay in your system after surgery even up to a week (depending on the type used), you don't want to play around this kind of an issue. Also make sure you are using your incentive spirometer (they should have given you one at the hospital). This will help to prevent pneumonia

MissJDVSG got a reaction from bill1130 in Winded more easily after anesthesia?
Hey guys! I was sleeved on 1/18. I have had an easy recovery so far, Thank God. I had minimal pain the first day (it felt like I had done a million crunches the night before). The second day the pain was even less, I was up walking around and feeling fine. Today is day 3 post-op and I'm feeling pretty close to normal.
But I've noticed that I am somewhat more easily winded (walking up stairs, walking longer distances) after the surgery. I did not get this winded before. Is this normal?
Thanks in advance for any information.

Hey there! I'm 27, 5'4 and 345 and I am also having surgery tomorrow. I'm not nervous, although this is my first surgery. At this point, I just want to do it and start losing!
My advise is to rely on what you know. You know that surgical risks are minimal, even compared to other minimally invasive surgeries. You know that it works for most people and that most people do well. Good luck tomorrow!

I never really understood people being afraid of anesthesia. It's the best! It's like magic! One moment you are pre-op, the next you are post-op. It's like time travel!
One thing I always advise people who get last-minute cold feet is that you made this decision to have surgery when you were being logical and rational. You presumably put countless hours into research, learning everything you could, and evaluating if this was the right decision for you. Trust in the choice you made when you were sane! Don't let this last-minute wave of irrational thought and emotion deter you.

We're surgery buddies! I'm also having my surgery on the 18th! And yes, I'm also nervous. But I'm just as excited. I'm just trying to pray and be rational. These surgeries have low complication rates, and despite being fat I am fairly healthy.
    Good luck!

My surgery is on the 23rd and I started my preop diet on the 4th, so I've been doing this for a week. My best advice is to stay busy! When you want to eat, go for a walk, drink some Water or brush your teeth. Keep at it- you will see the pounds coming off soon if you haven't already! It's only been a week and I lost 13 pounds on this preop diet. I can relate to it being hard, night time is the worst for me so I have been going to bed earlier than usual. But I just wanted to send a note of encouragement that if I can do it, anyone can do it. (I have to admit I cheated and ate something off my diet two days ago, but I got right back on it and it was my only cheat)!

I think one of the things that convinced me to have surgery (aside from the very real health risks of obesity) is that overweight people tend to earn less money at work.
I don't have the stats off the top of my head but it's frustrating. People look at you and assume that because you can't control your weight you must be lazy.
This makes the investment even more worth while for me. I know this doesn't answer your initial question of how to get the money for surgery, but it is another reason to have the surgery.
    Good luck with everything!

I'm having my surgery via Medicaid in Illinois. There is a lot of stuff to do but eventually they will pay for it. I had to do a 6 month supervised diet, have an endoscopy, see a pulmonologist, see a cardiologist, and have a psych eval. I imagine you might have to go through similar requirements. But it'll be worth it. Call the number on the back to see if they cover bariatric surgery. Some states don't, some do.

You can't control his actions, you can only control yours. It sucks that he isn't being more supportive, but that said, he's not having surgery, you are.

The world isn't going to stop eating crap because you can't. food commercials are still going to be crazy. Restaurants are still going to serve unhealthy stuff in huge portions. Everywhere you look there are going to be people eating, shopping for junk food, etc.

You do you and ignore him.

MissJDVSG reacted to LittleBill in Bachelorhood
This morning, Mrs. LittleBill up and left me. You might say I drove her to it - literally. She is traveling out to visit our middle daughter and her family to help watch the little monsters while our son-in-law is out of town on a trip. She is also taking a car out to them that they are acquiring from my parents. So, I drove her to pick it up at Mom and Dad's house early this morning.
She plans to come back though, so I am not a permanent bachelor. But for the next little while, I will be eating my high Protein, low carb meal selections off paper plates using plastic forks and spoons, and quaffing my liquids from a paper cup. Because hey, that's what bachelors do, right? I know there are other things bachelors do, but I have already been warned not to do them. So I will content myself with paper products and not putting the seat down on the toilet. It's a wild life around here, let me tell you.

MissJDVSG reacted to Frenchie1977 in Complications from advancing diet too soon
So I just read yet another post about someone advancing their diet on their own too soon. This one from someone 4 days post op advancing to broccoli Soup. Probably won't kill them but it could. Then of course we get the irresponsible follow up poster saying that they too advanced their diet on their own way early and explored all kinds of foods and as long as their stomach tolerates it they see no problem with it.
Now I'm getting super frustrated, I had to put my two cents in. And perhaps I was harsh. But I watched someone die 4 years ago from doing just this.
My x mother in law had gastric sleeve surgery. At less than two weeks post op she started eating tidbits of foods she was not supposed to have, turkey, stuffing, ham, chicken in very small bites and yes chewed very well. All that didn't matter. She was fine at first. In fact showed no symptoms for days. Then she became extremely ill, with pain and fever. She had a leak which had to be repaired by surgery. After surgery she developed a serious infection and a fistula which led to the outside of her stomach. Everything she tried to drink seeped outside her stomach onto a large padded napkin that she held up to the opening of that fistula. They could not get the infection under control. They fought it for three months with the best antibiotics they had. Eventually she became septic, her organs began to fail and she passed away.
I am only 4 weeks post op VSG, you better believe I thought long and hard about having the same surgery that she had. But I can also say that I have followed my an to the T, with the exception of drinking coffee which I discussed with my surgeon beforehand.
When are people going to realize that following their diet is serious. And more so when are these idiots going to stop coming on and saying things like it's ok to explore foods early as long as you tolerate them!!!! My mother in law tolerated those foods just fine for damn near a week before she finally showed the signs of a serious leak.
Your prescribed diet plan after major stomach surgery is not just a guideline that they want you to follow so you can lose weight. It's a prescription that really can mean life or death, I've seen it with my own eyes.
    Ugggggh sooooooo frustrated!!!!!!!

Nicer restaurants charge a split fee.
If you don't want to pay stuff like that there is always Applebee's.
Just because you are eating "less" does not mean you cost less to service.
Why should the restaurant or the server lose money on your table because you had WLS?

Why be scared? She did a good job losing almost 70 pounds dispite not being completely prepared for the reality of the surgery. She's had a set back. So what? Life is full of them. We have to learn to navigate our new lives around those set backs, and if we can't do it on our own, we get help so we can.
The reality of it is this:
You MUST change your lifestyle or it won't work. Period.
You MUST change your relationship with food or it won't work. Period.
You MUST find the motivation to keep going when life doesn't cooperate, or when we get 'behavior fatigue' or it won't work. Period.
You MUST feel enough self worth to know you DESERVE to be healthy and happy, or it won't work. Period.
The surgery is such a small part of the equation, really.
