I had my RNY 8/10. My surgery weight was 280. I quickly gained 14 lbs by day 6. My doc put me back on my diuretic I had been on for years. Overnight that 14 lbs was peep back off. Now I am losing slowly. My Fluid continues to fluctuate. I am 12 days out and weigh 271. I wish it were more. BUT... I started at 303 in May, and when I look at the big picture, that is much more than my usual diet track record!! So I am happy! My tool is working!! I am hoping that with exercise and proper use of the tool, I will make it to 183. I lost down to that at age 18 and wore a size 14. I am grateful for every little bit lost.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I'm trying to keep focus on the big picture and telling myself that it will take time to get this weight just like it took time to pack it all on. I will definitely keep you posted and continue to seek advice and tips from everyone on here. This site has really made getting ready for this surgery much easier to process.

As you said liquids are the first challenge for nearly everyone from what I have read and experienced. What's worse, mostly everyone does not realize how sick and weak you can feel when you don't get at least the minimal requirement in.
My surgical team required the whole first week of Clear Liquids and when I look back on it, I know it is because fluids are so critical, even more important that Protein at that stage. Staying hydrated is #1.
Unfortunately it took me longer than a week to master getting enough Fluid in me to keep me from feeling weak, nauseous and having a headache.
I finally learned one trick that actually still works for me today. I had to literally hold a cup in my hand for the first couple hours of the day and constantly sip so that I had a head start on my liquids. Even today nearly 2 years later I start my day with a 20oz bottle of Water, followed by a 30g Protein shake and then 30 minutes later another 20 oz bottle of Water. This really sets me up for a good day.
You have to figure out what works for you. Some people set and alarm for every five minutes or so to take a sip, that didn't work for me. I had to hold the cup in my hand.
Of course in the first few weeks I could not even get that 11oz Protein Shake down. It would take me most of the day and I had to thin it out with milk. But by 4 weeks I was able to get all of my water and Protein down.
Of course I had advanced to full liquids week 2, pureed foods for weeks 3 and 4.
I did not do well on the pureed diet. It was just too soon to be trying pureed meats. And eggs did not work for me at all and still don't. So for those two weeks I ate a lot of yogurt, cottage cheese, cream of wheat with Protein powder, Protein shakes, pureed veggies and creamed Soups.< /p>
I think the biggest learning for me was, just because your surgeon advances you doesn't mean that you cannot take it slower and go back to the previous stage. In fact if you are having trouble, call them and likely they will have you go back for a week or two.
This allows your new tummy to heal better before advancing.
This is just my opinion but advancing ones diet too quickly can actually cause you to not focus on getting the fluids in and building that good habit.

Crushed ice (Sonic is my favorite) with ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates eaten with a spoon was helpful early out.
My surgeon allowed ProtiDiet Tomato basil and creamy chicken Soups even during the clear phase and they were great because sweet Protein drinks were tiring.
I also liked V8 for something more savory.

Hi, I had my surgery July 13, RnY, I would suggest you concentrate on broth and Water, don't worry about Protein Shakes for a few days. You need to get up and walk, at least around your house to get rid of the gas that will help with pain and nausea, good luck

    Hello!
This is a short story as I only had the surgery on 8/17/16! I was discharged from the hospital the next day and have been sitting on my couch ever since! Lol. I've been in moderate pain, mainly where my incision sites are (one is really located at a bad position and is the largest which is causing me the most pain). I've been trying to get my liquids and Protein in but haven't been too successful. My goal right now is not to throw anything up. I have a hard time with the Protein shakes in general and don't really care for any of them, which doesn't help. Haha.
Basically I'm looking for people to talk to about this major life change. I am only 21 and don't know of many people my age that have had this done. I want to know your guys stories and successes! It encourages me to keep going and keep strong.
    Thank you all!

I use the lemon chews. You have to take two instead of one but since they taste just like lemon drops that's not a problem.

Gina171, I'm feeling really good!! I went to Walmart for a bit today. I don't hurt anywhere, but my incision sites are itching like crazy and I am super sore, like someone rearranged my insides, lol!!!
I am having a hard time getting "enough" fluids in...I think I'm getting a little dehydrated. I don't want to end up back in the hospital on fluids, so I better step up my game tomorrow lol!

@@fit2bme Thanks for saying no 2 journeys are the same because I see so many people comparing their weight loss to others and getting discouraged for not losing as much as fast as someone else. I have told myself daily even though I don't have my surgery until 8/23 because I know it will be easy to fall i to that trap.

eggs are the worst. Just avoid them until later. I can tolerate them now but early on it was a disaster

You have a very positive attitude and let me tell you, the first few months of figuring things out you will need it.
I promise, it does gets better as time goes buy. Foods that don't work today, may work tomorrow or next week or next month or year even.
The only food that I cannot tolerate is eggs......I keep trying though.
I am 23 months post op....
Best of luck to you and stay positive! Congratulations!

Hiya, tomorrow is my 5th week post op anniversary...I'm excited about learning so much about the changes in my body. I've learned that eggs are NOT MY THING...and if I don't chew 25-30 times.... I dump! Just as plain as that!!!...although...I DUMP ALOT ALREADY... I went back to work last week and notice how easy it is to wake up the nerves in my stomach....I'm still a little achy in certain parts of my tummy....especially standing on my feet nonstop....if at first you don't succeed.... TRY TRY AGAIN....SO..if I feel sick trying to eat ...I stop and try it again hours later...smaller bites....chew more...I've LEARNED TO GET IN MY Protein Shakes EARLY...BECAUSE NOTHING ELSE IS GUARANTEED TO GO DOWN...I've learned not to compare my journey with others...NO TWO journeys ARE THE SAME....I've learned to STOP..AND BREATH....EVERYTHING Is Going TO BE GRAND...I'm Grateful for my opportunity and feel that I'm slowly getting my life back!
