Hello. I was 23 when I had my RNY last year and I never told most of my family. I know just from growing up with them that the chances of them being extremely judgmental or worse had I actually told them were basically 100%. Even now at nearly 14 months post op and after losing over 250 pounds, I KNOW that if I told them about surgery, the happiness and pride they're feeling now about my health and progress would still be there, but it would be overshadowed by judgment, ignorance, and jealousy. Having them believe I changed my diet drastically, focus on exercise, and generally take much better care of myself is the reason I've lost weight (which, it is!) without knowing surgery kick-started it and made it possible is essentially showing me their kindness without the ignorance. It's a win-win situation to me.
As for being young... how often do you see people here saying they wish they had done it when they were younger? How many people marveling at how incredible they feel and lamenting spending so many years, decades suffering when they could have prevented it? Does it even make sense to know what lays at the end of the road you're travelling is an early painful and humiliating death, but to keep travelling down that road instead of just taking a fork NOW before you harm yourself permanently? When I finally understood and really made myself believe these things, caring about the opinions of the people who bitch about me being too young just sort of melted away. They're telling me I'm too young to save my own life and fight for decades of extra years and health. After taking these things to heart, their opinions suddenly seem not only laughable but offensive. You're not a child anymore, and you know what you need to be healthy. It's time for the adults in our lives to sit down and stop being our authority. They are now the lucky spectators of our wonderful future.

Hay I'm 27 and I told all my friends and family via a Facebook post and I also mentioned that I'm doing this for me and I told them if you don't have anything positive and supportive to say keep your opinions to your self because even if you see this as a easy way out or as cheating you don't know the struggles I have gone through due to being overweight and what matters most is how I feel and how having this surgery is going to change my life for the better, So just be happy for me.
I'm also having my surgery in Jan 2017

Hello Nicewon, I had the same fears after my surgery. I am 8 months out from my surgery date and I can tell you that you will be able to eat just about anything you had before just not as much. When I go out to eat I try to share a meal with my husband. Here lately though he has been wanting his own. LOL I tell myself I can order the full meal just ask for a to go box and I can eat the leftovers the next day. I still seem to waste the leftover meal since I only like to eat leftovers once. I can now eat a whole small size burger but I remembered when I could only eat 1/3 then 1/2. I never eat french fries anymore since I try to focus only on the burger. Combos seems like a waste of money and food now. I am a thrift shopper and always looking for the best deal. Now I just pay the price for a single food Item on the menu so I don't waste the food. I'll admit I'm not your average weight loss patient. I went out on a limb and tried some of my favorite foods and found I could still eat them but now I enjoy tasting them and not devouring them. This surgery has changed the way I look at food and I love it. I'm still loosing weight but I told myself I'm in no hurry to be a size 7. I am currently down to 205 and in a size 16 pants. I am very happy with my results and I have told God if this is as good as it gets I am happy. But the scale keeps going down. LOL

I had the SADi a little less than 2 years ago and I eat whatever I want now. Yesterday I had a half pound blue cheese burger at a business lunch and had no issue eating the whole thing. I also picked at some of the appetizers but the burger was the meal for me.
Generally I eat smaller amounts all day long which adds up to about 3k calories a day. Calories don't really matter as much as nutrition.
I've been skinny as hell since about 11 months post surgery. It wasn't my goal but I'm ok with it now since I'm stable and healthy.

I feel yah Hun I'm right with yah. I had surgery 6/28/2016 and it changed my life for the best. I go out and eat with my family a lot and end up always having my kids or hubby pick from my order as I'll never finish my plate. I eyeball food now knowing if I'll finish it or not. I'm picky now too, many things don't taste or sit well with me. Sometimes things I loved don't taste the same. But I'm not missing out either, I love having new energy and the ability to fit in smaller sizes. Hang in there it only gets better

Do you have any comorbidity issues? I would have your surgeon appeal your insurance companies decision. I have a 250cm common Chanel with the DS Loop and I can tell you I may not get diarrhea but it could melt paint with the smell. I just went for my 6 week blood work to see what additional Vitamins I may need.

I had the loop DS in June 2016. I received all the paperwork for the traditional DS. After doing some research I know the difference between between the 2 but to answer your question I will draw on my own experience. My common channel is 250 most DS are between 100 and 150. I guess I do not mal absorb as much with a longer channel. I still take 2 multi Vitamins 4 Calcium a day. I just got my 6 week labs back and need some Vitamin D and a little Iron. My weight has dropped averaging a lb or more a day. I know there is no long term data on this surgery but I feel good about it and hope I am right that I will not have to be on such a rigiorous Vitamin regimen or other bathroom issues sometimes associated with the traditional DS. As far as food goes I'm not hungry but when I am I try and get Protein first and anything else after.

I have talked to the coordinator assigned to me with Dr. Kim. It's covered 90% and I have to go through 3 months on a medically supervised diet. I have an appointment with my PCP to start the diet this coming Tuesday. I am so excited! Sadly SIPS isn't covered and the DS won't happen for my BMI, but I'm going to get the sleeve and hope for the best and dedicate my self to a healthier life. I can't wait to start this journey!!!

Thought I had full DS turns out I had SADI with 250cc common Chanel. My doctor says he does all of them 250cc to cut down on malabsorption and diarrhea problems. I am much happier knowing I have a longer Chanel and only one cut inside

Recovery time for me was a few days with no lifting more than 10 lbs for 6 weeks. Most people out of work for 2 weeks primarily to learn how and what to eat. I had almost no pain that was hard to handle and did not take 1 pain killer after being released from hospital. I have had diarrhea 1 time in 14 days and mild gas. Most gas was from procedure and getting it out. I know they say some foods that contain carbs can trigger gas and diarrea so I will have to be careful. My recovery has been no different than just sleeves that I have read or watched on you tube. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Not at all. After 6 months of research I know 100% I made the right call for me. Let's be honest all surgeries are a tool. I was looking for something permanent that all my hard work would compliment. I know just the sleeve is a great tool for many I just didn't think it was quite enough for my 5.8' 324lbs body in the long run.

I just had the DS June 8 2016. I went to my surgeon wanting the lapband. He quickly advised me that was not the way to go. After about an hour of discussing my eating habits and health problems we decided the DS was the best option for me. The DS has a better diabetes remission rate and the malabsorption properties will help with better than optimal food choices that are possible later on. The sleeve alone can still be stretched and your food has the same amount of absorption. I decided why would I want a procedure that also has a revision surgery in case of failure. That revision is the DS. It comes with more risk but more reward in the long run. If you consider the DS make sure your surgeon is comfortable with it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I was in hospital 2.5 days. The insurance company only approves the first day then you re apply if there are issues. My issue was blood oxygen. I needed to get the levels up off the oxygen. My insurance approved 5 days total after the first day. I think depending if you meet all criteria to leave one day may be all you need.
