I am a female, 53 years old, and I have lost 118 pounds. I think that the cold sores are caused by the stress of the surgery to the body. Since I was getting them so frequently I talked to my doctor about them and he prescribed Veltrex and I take it when I feel one coming and then it stops it in its tracks. The medicine has been very helpful.

Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. More than likely your body and immune system is stressed from surgery and weightloss and is having a hard time keeping the virus suppressed. A good part of our immune system is located in our GI tract which was just violently disrupted, to say the least. Good nutrition will help get you back on track. You may try taking lysine for awhile....500mg/day. It can help slow the replication of the herpes virus. There are also OTC topicals that won't necessarily get rid of them, but will help with the discomfort until they are gone.

This may sound lame, but when I first got sleeved, I kept a small container of vaporub in my purse. I put a little around my nostrils so I couldn't smell the food. I also used whitestrips for my teeth when I'm cooking so I'm not tempted to graze. Don't laugh - it works! I found tricks like that great for just getting over the hump. After a while, I just got over it and quit craving stuff. I think a lot of it was habit. Unconcious comfort eating was automatic. Now I'm aware of it and don't do it anymore.

Another Aussie here. Sleeved 10 months ago by Dr Joseph in the Mater hospital Sydney.
I cant say enough good things about how the surgery has gone for me. Most the surgery was covered under my health fund, including private hospital but still out of pocket around $5k.
I have lost 66kgs in the last 10 months and am happier and healthier than I could have imagined!
Happy to answer any questions anyone has.
Good luck to you all on your journey.

    --eat before you go
--don't have even one glass of bubbles -- not necessary to Celebrate, and the first glass is enough to lower your judgment and inhibitions about what else to drink or eat
--practice what you will say to people who are pressing you to eat or drink so that you say it fluidly and without having to think about it beforehand. Examples:
    no thank you
    no thank you, I'm good,
    sorry, I can't drink, doctor's orders
sorry, I'm driving tonight, no alcohol for me
no thank you, I don't eat that*
You might be surprised how much fun you can have at these celebrations with family and friends when you *aren't* obsessing about food or alcohol or sweets. It's very freeing, and it's great to have the focus be on the people around you rather than whatever you are shoveling in your mouth.
I eat before social events, and tell myself that if I see plain meat or green veggies offered, I can eat that, but everything else is simply a non-starter for me. That makes it easier -- no worrying, no stress. I remind myself that I am not going to starve to death if I don't eat for a couple of hours. And I have a great time!
*note -- I have found that food pushers respond much better to "I don't eat that" than to "I can't eat that" or "I shouldn't eat that." You say either of those last two things and people will start arguing with you. "Why can't you eat that? You can eat just a little bit." "Yes you should! Just take a little bit, it's the holidays." But when I've said "I don't eat that" or "I don't eat that way" or "I don't eat that way anymore" people take me seriously and stop trying to push food on me.
    Good luck!

missdeeAus got a reaction from Hiraeth in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 - due to very irregular but extremely heavy periods. I once bled for 3mnths straight and finally told my mum. I was put on the pill which masked those symptoms but of course my weight climbed. At 26 they new more about PCOS and when I went in for a routine pap - the new gp took an interest in my story asking all the usual questions. I started metformin and also a weight loss journey - a slow one. I look forward to shedding the weight post surgery now at age 32 and hoping for a normal cycle. For now it is every 2 months for about 5 days but it comes and goes as it pleases sometimes. I also often feel my ovaries having little pings of pain. Like they are trying to work or doing something. Still not sure if I should recommence on metformin as I was advised to stop while my stomach heals. Probably due to visit the gp again. Wouldn't it be nice if gps stayed put - I hate retelling my life story every 12mnth.

I was able to have coffee after two days. Watch the milk though - it may make u feel a bit sick in the tummy if you have too much. I have always liked my coffee strong - but even more so now. As such I limit to one strong coffee each morning as my 'treat' - besides I'd get the sack if I skipped it.

Ok a second question- if you were to add Protein to your Water bottle- would u treat it as a - meal or a snack or a beverage.
For Instance enjoy my egg at breakfast- and then I'm not to eat for 3hrs. But if I also made a Protein shake to sip over the morning would that be considered drinking or eating in your opinion?
Happy to count the calories but would not like to be 'grazing' between meals.

missdeeAus got a reaction from suzzzzz in Having a sleeve vs. old school dieting?
I'm am big because I loved to eat in volume. Small amounts left me hungry. Real hungry - not head hungry. Even healthy food like salad and veg, I wanted huge amounts of to make the grumble go away. Even worse if fast food was involved. Now I'm satisfied by a small portion be it healthy or a treat. I still feel real hunger but it is satisfied easily and goes away long enough that I'm not always thinking of food. I also catch head hunger so much easier now and rarely get that craving type hunger for really unhealthy food. This has made all the good things I was capable of, so much easier. Also after surgery nothing seems scary. Like joining a gym which I had always been too scared to do. As soon as I was cleared I went and joined. After being seen in a hospital gown, my tights and long top seemed just fine. Good luck with your decision.

I don't worry about it. It sounds like you are overthinking this. Just track the protein and fluids. To me it doesn't matter what you call it.

Hey there. I joined curves - I just needed it to be sure I wouldn't slack off. If you can afford to join it definitely couldn't do any harm. Try to pick somewhere you feel comfortable. The place I go is quite and feels like a second home.

Thank you so much for this. I am pre-surgery and I always say I am fat because I am hungry all the time. When I make good choices I am still hungry. I eat a healthy dinner and an hour later I am back in the kitchen because I am hungry. I had a super skinny person tell me once that they reason I am always hungry is because all I eat is junk, my body is craving real food and lacking Vitamins, etc. Nope, I do eat good stuff, I just eat too much of (for instance, LOVE nuts, eat way too many of them) and I also eat things like carbs because they fill me up.
Love your comment, can't wait for my approval!!!
