My surgeon won't clear anyone for surgery unless they stop smoking. It can cause issues with healing, and increases risk for ulcers post op.

SilentBotts got a reaction from Dub in Did you ever have second thoughts?
I'm about six months out and my only regret is not doing this years ago.
I feel great, I look great, it's amazing.
I had one small panic attack about a week before surgery. Ordering take out had become such a regular habit that I suddenly freaked that I wouldn't be able to order pizza/Chinese food or have other fast food stuff for a long time possibly forever. It then occurred to me that maybe the fact that I was panicking about food was an indication that I hade some problems with my relationship with food and that made me more sure that the surgery was the correct course.

100Lbs down, just hit the 200s which is a huge milestone for me. I probably haven't weight less than 300 since middle school.

SilentBotts got a reaction from JJCool in How long did it take you to lose 100 lbs?
I hit 100 lbs lost at just about 5 months. My starting weight was 400 so the weight loss would have been faster initially than someone who started at a lower weight.

I had been taking Colace, I found the Miralax didn't really help at all.

Hey friends! I'm almost 10 months post op so I thought I'd share an updated before & after photo. I started at my highest weight of 205 last year. According to the BMI chart, "normal" weight for my height is 98-127 so I initially had a goal weight of 125 in mind. My surgeon actually told me that he is considered "overweight" on the BMI scale but he's pretty much all muscle. I have been working out regularly since 3 months post op so he told me that I may never see 125 on the scale if I continue to build muscle. He told me to have a goal body fat percentage rather than a goal weight. At the beginning of my journey, my body fat percentage was 53% (yikes!). My goal percentage is between 20-24%. I'm happy to report that today I am down 65 pounds and have a body fat percentage of 20%. I may never lose those 13 extra pounds and be at 127 but I'm now in the "healthy range" for body fat percentage. I just want to let you all know that you don't necessarily have to weigh a certain number to be healthy. I am still overweight according to the BMI chart but I'm in the "athlete" category on the body fat chart. Keep in mind the BMI chart only factors in your height and weight, not where the weight actually comes from. Weight from fat is bad but weight from muscle is good.

I'm not shy about talking about the surgery at all. For the most part anyone I've talked to has been supportive/curious. It's probably a good bellwether for continuing the relationship. If he has issues with you having had the surgery not sure it's someone you would want to stay with anyway.

I'm glad it worked out. I'm actually baffled that they scheduled you before getting approval from insurance first.

SilentBotts got a reaction from ppressey24 in TMI POST- Constipation
Double check with your doctor, but you'll probably want some milk of magnesia or miralax. Also a softener like Colace. This next part is a little gross but you'll probably also want to get some sterile latex/nitrile gloves in case it's impacted you'll have to manually help it pass. This happened to me middle of my second week home.

SilentBotts got a reaction from reducer623 in Why no soda
The carbonation and the sugar. In theory diet sodas should be fine if your plan allows other sugar free artificially sweetened drinks. The carbonation can be irritating to some sleeves, so check with your surgeon or NUT for their opinion on it. My instructions where to avoid it for the first few months.

SilentBotts got a reaction from ella37 in Did anyone NOT have a miserable recovery?
My recovery was fine. I only had real pain for about the first two weeks but it was very manageable, I stopped taking pain killers on week two. Never had issues with hitting my Water and Protein goals, only food I've had any issues with so far has been any kind of sugar alcohol sweetener.

Unless I know them well enough to know they are going to react in a not great way I've just been telling everyone. I've had really great conversations about it, people seem curious for the most part. A surprising number actually already have friends and family who've had some kind of weight loss surgery.
