One of the requirements I had to meet in order to be released from the hospital was to be able to drink a whole shake in an hour. I was expected to, and able to, do that the day after surgery.
Ele I think when you say "I can't" you might actually mean "I'm afraid to". I think everyone worries initially about stretching their pouch, including me, but know this: It is highly unlikely that you will stretch your sleeve or pouch. HIGHLY unlikely. Our bari team addressed this issue in support group and they all said that it would take an incredible amount of consistent abuse to achieve such a feat (even harder for sleevers I think). If you want to stretch things out, you MIGHT be able to IF you work hard at it, but that will involve effort, pain, a lot of time, and significant over eating. My point is, you aren't going to stretch your pouch. My advice, for what it's worth, is to let go of the fear (seriously, drop it. It's counterproductive), relax, and just follow the plan outlined for you. You'll do great

As you heal, you'll continue to be able to eat more, but you still won't be able to eat a lot. 4 tablespoons is not lot of food. Your surgeon seems to tell you something different than most of us hear from ours. Again I was required to drink a full shake in an hour before they would even release me from the hospital, and I was required 3 shakes a day right after that. If I were you, I'd be less worried about pouch stretching and more worried about malnutrition. Sounds like you are not eating enough!

I know that you had bariatric surgery, friend. You posted that you had a by-pass. I'm sharing with you that while all pouches are not the same size, they aren't "stretchable"--especially at 3 weeks. If your pouch can stretch at all depends on your surgeon's preference and performance.
I read in another post of yours that you are 3 weeks out. I also read that you are frightened.
That is why I am recommending that you call your bariatric team TOMORROW and let them relieve your fears. At three weeks out, you should be able to consume more than you are---and do so without being frightened.

It actually is possible to drink too much Water and in your case, I suspect that is true. You aren't getting enough nutrition to be flushing out your system like that. You must be drinking constantly in order to achieve that kind of intake. How will you ever have room for food?? Of course you're not hungry. Try sipping about 64 oz of Water throughout the day instead, only between meals, and leave those 30-60 minutes between food and drink.

That's an incredible amount of Fluid. Seriously, 256 oz of Water? I don't think that's even possible but sure would explain lack of room for food. By gallon, do you mean liters? (2L = 64oz)
You should call your surgeons office and tell them what's going on.

Whether or not you are hungry or have an appetite should not play a role in whether or not you eat. I ate because my body needed the nutrition and I didn't want to screw up my metabolism by restricting calories for any extended period of time. Every bite I took was a chore for the first 4 months and if I had waited to eat until I had an appetite I wouldn't have eaten for at least 6-8 months. You should follow your surgeon's meal plan like any other prescription. You took your methylprednisolone as prescribed and you should now be eating/drinking as prescribed. And like cowgirljane mentioned, consuming huge quantities of Water without adequate nutrient and electrolytes can certainly cause problems. You definitely need to share your concerns and what you are eating/drinking with your surgeon and nut. You are only harming yourself by not doing do.

Is the pre-op liquid diet weight dependent? Curious because I only had to do liquids the day before surgery with nothing after midnight.

Shaydi.Laine got a reaction from tanners_mom in Hungry already! Is this normal?
7 days post-op and also hungry. This isn't head hunger, I know the difference. Head hunger I can actually ignore, real hunger drags me out of bed at 3am for a yogurt just to stop the pain so I can sleep.
I mentioned the hunger to the bariatric nurse when she called to check on me. She said the liquid phase is the worst and once I move to pureed foods, I will start feeling more satisfied. Maybe true but doesn't alleviate the disappointment we feel from being hungry after this operation when we are told that we won't be.
On the plus side I have already dropped 6.5 pounds on top of the 10 pounds(!) of Water weight I gained in the hospital. I have never seen the scale drop so fast.
Now to survive another week of liquids....

Michelev97, I recommend a book called "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble for about $20.00 or so. It answers tons of questions regarding pre and post op. I had the sleeve 23 months ago. I was in the hospital 2 nights. A few doctors do this as an outpatient procedure. My doc does not. I had a catheter just for the first day.
I live alone so when I was released I went home to my house and no one stayed with me. My family lives close by and called daily to check on me.
I went home with a drain and I had a follow up with his RN 7 days after I was released and she removed the drain. I did not have any major complications. Be sure to buy the groceries on your doctors list. Follow the rules. Walk as much as possible every day. Have a heating pad handy just in case u need it. My pain was minor. Just a little discomfort. Remember everyone's journey is different. If u can attend support groups before surgery I highly recommend it! Those people will become your friends. You are on your way to joining the losers bench. Welcome to the club.

Don't be too nervous. Of all the surgeries I have had this was the simplest to deal with. The results you will get are well worth any short-lived discomfort you might have.
You won't need it but good luck.
