This is exactly what I'm going through right now! My insurance requires 6 months of dietitian appointments and my last one is August 18. My insurance does not say I have to lose weight but just show that I've had unsuccessful attempts at weight loss. I have gained weight, too, since my initial appointment and am worried I'll be denied.
Have you been approved by your insurance yet?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that has gained a bit. It seems like everyone else has no trouble losing weight during the 3- or 6-month period before their surgery. I'm envious!

I got the insurance approval on the 29th of july and it only took about 7 days for them to approve it, then the surgery center called me that next wednesday and gave me a surgery date of August 29th.

I had RNY this past Monday and my decision was based on the long-term data, the "gold standard," and because of my problem with GERD. I'm still having a hard time getting my Protein shakes in (4 days postop) but I am so thrilled that I did this! I've always wanted to give up sugar to be healthier so with fear of dumping I have given up sugar. I realize that with some time I will be able to enjoy a cookie if I want but if I ever eat sugar again it will certainly be worth it!! Good luck.

Do you see a pattern here? Maybe it does depend on the insurance and, if so, it may be your own plan's requirements upon whicith it depends. It may be the RD (I hope not a nutritionist) at your chosen bariatric practice who will inform you of the prescribed food plan(s) and with whom you can bargain for something more to your liking.
Based on the information you provide, you may do well to have broad discussions with the RD, as you suggest knowing almost nothing about nutrition and weight loss. To gain weight as a vegetarian is possible, especially if you coat and fry everything, pile on pounds of cheese and lean toward the starches.
You'll save a lot of nervousness -- and time -- if you present the questions to the proper sources. Compiling a list of requirements of 10 other insurance companies, for example, may very well shed no light on yours.
When I feel overwhelmed by a large project, I regain my confidence and capability when I compile a list of tasks and questions all in logical sequence.
P.S. My own insurance company is staffed by idiots on the front line and, as it's worsened in the past couple of years, it becomes clear that this is deliberate on the part of management. The person in your bariatric practice who handles insurance applications will/should be a reliable resource.

klouisa64 reacted to LipstickLady in When will I stop regretting this surgery?
To those who are regretting it.

You can't change it and these feelings WILL go away if you consider what may happen if you work your WLS. I have a stricture, I was nauseated for the first few weeks. I was dehydrated for a long time. I was stuck on purees for 6 weeks and couldn't eat "real food" until my 3.5 month mark. I slimed and foamed for my first year and I still vomit at almost three years out if I eat rice, potatoes or Pasta, or one bite too many. Feeling full is miserable and my meals are teeny.

    I LOVE IT.
I am thin, I am healthy, I can do whatever the fluck I want to do physically. I can fit into any outfit that fits my fancy and look good. I can put ice cream in my cart (can't eat it, I dump) and no one looks at me with judgement. I am no longer the fat mom. I no longer have ouchy feet or knees. My sugar is no longer pre-diabetic. My heart is no longer in distress because of my obesity.

I rock. I am finally who I am supposed to be on the outside. I was always who I am on the inside and now the rest of me matches.

    It's fabulous.

So where to begin, I'm 20 years old, and am 5'4". My weight when starting this process was 284 pounds. At my last weigh in with the nutritionist I was 262. When I met with my psychologist this week she informed me that the total weight I could lose with the sleeve was 70 pounds. That it is the average and thats all I can ever lose. I told her I felt that was untrue if i work hard to lose the 124 pounds I want to lose. (I've already lost 20 presurgery). She was very adamant that there's no possible way I'll lose everything I want. I'm extremely concerned now. I've never heard his before and from everyone I've seen and talked to who's had the surgery seems to have lost way more then that...its scaring me into wanting the bypass which I was very against...I felt super confident with my decision before this appointment and am now so torn. To trust my gut and the wonderful people I've come to see lose 100s of pounds with the sleeve or trust the medical doctor whose seen hundreds of patients....input & thoughts anyone...
Oh and I met with my NUT right before this appointment and she told me I should be able to lose 107 pounds by 9 months out ! &the psychologists told me she was using my high weight and not the 262, so she was wrong...ugh ????

klouisa64 reacted to mrs w in Low BMI'ers, how are you doing?
    Hi everyone,
I'm finally back for an update! I had been in the typical stall for quite some time, so was hesitant to post too much and come across pessimistic.
Here's a recap. Had my surgery January 9th in Mexico. BMI was 29, weighed in at 153.4 (only 5'1) on January 1st when I started my pre-op. I had an easy pre-op, basically just did Protein shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then veggies and chicken for dinner. Three days before surgery was yogurt only diet, but I did add a Protein shake once a day just to keep my Protein up and my carbs down. Day of surgery I weighed 148.4 lbs, which put my BMI at 28.
I went down to Mexico on the day of surgery and spent a few days in San Diego afterwards. First time I weighed myself on my home scale I was 139.2 and that was on January 17th.
    Jan 18 - 137.2
    Jan 19 - 137.0
Then my weight started to bounce around and stall out so I stopped weighing daily.
    Feb 1 - 137.6.
I started working out Feb 1, scale was still moving super slow, so again just weighed every once in a while
    Feb 5 - 136.0
    Feb 23 - 135.2
Then I went on vacation to California. Just got back last night and I weighed in this morning at .... 129.0!!!!!! That puts me at a BMI of 24.4, the high end of NORMAL WEIGHT.
Why did I finally drop? I don't exactly know, but here's two things that probably helped.
    1. I ate out a lot, and although I didn't eat lots at a time, my calories were definitely higher, so I think that actually helped boost my metabolism.
    2. I got super sick the second last night, stuck in the bathroom (sorry if this is TMI - but basically all night pooping and puking --- although it was mostly dry heaving since there was no food in me). So I probably am down quite a bit of Water weight, and fully expect I may gain a couple pounds once I get hydrated again and eating somewhat normal.
Anyways, I just wanted to post an update since it's been a while, and I feel like I may have finally broken this stall. I am less than 6 lbs above my lowest weight as an adult. Still 14 lbs above my goal weight, but that being said, I am looking forward to increasing my exercise and putting on muscle, so realize it may be difficult for the scale to drop steadily if I'm toning up.
Hope everyone else is doing well!
--I am going to copy and paste this post to a few of the other "low BMI" threads, so sorry for the repeat to those of you that follow those threads as well--

I am only 5 days out, but I haven't had a problem getting in Protein shakes or Water. (I have, though, heard of many, many people who do, so you are not alone. The nurse is there to help you overcome issues, not to make you feel bad for having them!) We all have issues -- mine is pain. I am afraid I'm going to be called a drug addict because I should be off pain killers by now and instead I'm thinking of asking for something stronger. So everyone's got something to make things difficult in the beginning.
If you literally can't eat more than a couple of foods without getting queasy, maybe they aren't controlling your nausea well enough. Painkillers (if you're still using them) cause nausea in a lot of people. Maybe they can give you some Zofran to keep you from throwing up until your new pouch settles down. These are the kind of things you should feel comfortable discussing with your nurse. Making you feel stupid then sending you on your way with no resolution is dereliction of duty, in my opinion. Maybe an appointment with your surgeon is in order, or your PCP.
