I am about 24 years post op RNY.. December 1992. At that time there were no internet WLS groups, and gastric bypass surgery was considered experimental.

I now read a lot of info on various forums, but seldom post or comment in them. IMO, people should be taken at their word as to how far along post op they are. How long they've been a member of any group or how many comments they've made have absolutely nothing to do with their own gastric bypass personal experience.

It seems to me that the information is totally irrelevant... it certainly is TO ME. It also seems ridiculously exclusionary, since everyone is always going to be making personal value judgements about the experiences of others. For example, people who are only 5 or 10 years along are still "newbies" in my own personal book. Those who think I'm "new" could check out my own personal, non-profit blog, DietHobby, where I have commented frequently for the past 5 years.

We already have a Vets forum.
I don't see the need to segregate the site further. PM if the need be.
I think we just need to be more supportive of one another--no matter how long or short our journey has been.

Hey there! So I understand this perfectly. My boyfriend of 8 years went with me for the surgery down to Mexico, and I'm now 5 days post-op and he hasn't changed his eating habits in the slightest. Pre-op, this was really difficult for me. I really loathed him for it. Since post-op, I haven't had an inkling of hunger. While the food looks good and smells good, it's easy for me to ignore it.
Basically, what I've learned, is that I cannot expect those around me to change their eating habits just because I have an issue with weight and had to make a drastic change. Would I like for him to? Of course! But I don't blame him. And with your wife if her surgery is coming up in August, the chances are she is trying to eat what she wants and can now since soon she won't be able to. I honestly did this all the month of May leading up to my own surgery.
As for your kids, they may be young, but I'd suggest correcting that behavior now. It may seem harmless because they're unaware, but it could turn into more. And your feelings matter even if they don't grasp that concept yet. Besides, I'd guarantee once your wife is there and they do it to her it won't be as okay with her.

I'm very surprised by the amount of drama, snapping at people, ignoring advice, defensiveness, etc. shown about some things. The whole Bacon Fiasco is kind of ridiculous. It's HER problem, all anyone else can do is offer advice. I'm a dreaded 'newbie' who had the audacity to offer her some options for clear liquid Protein, telling her that she's got it in her to get through this and without being overly pointed about the damned bacon. It seems like we're viewed as one autonomous and terribly bothersome group at times and that really chaps my ass.
I'm not sure why there's such disdain for newbies from some posters, but I'm here to get and give support when I can and when I need it. I appreciate the wise advice from the 'vets' and would never be rude to any of you, but I'm not going to be rude to one of my cohort, either. You guys have made it to where I hope with all of my heart to be some day, but right now, I'm slogging through the first few weeks and trying to be of help anywhere I can while absorbing all I can about the road ahead.

Your doctor will most likely advise you to maintain your weight for six months. Insurance companies are often not helpful when telling you what you need so when you speak to your surgeons office they will give you what you need.

I am having my surgery August 8th and my birthday is 2 days after that so I told my fiancé that I wanted a Fitbit and the Fitbit scale to go with it for my birthday. They look like they are a great source of motivation.

I am also a student and I started in January and my surgery date is August 8th so if you need to do the 6 month diet you can expect 6-7 months if things are done in a timely matter. Some insurances require no diet or 3-4 months so you might finish faster.

I decided to have the surgery after my mother got it and lost 100 pounds and kept it off for going on four years now. Most centers around me at least require you to attend a seminar before they make an appointment for you, it may be like that around you too. I don't personally have any of the weight related issues that you have but it very well may help them. It is a huge decision to make so you really need to think about it because it is a huge life change. My surgery is August 8 and I started my journey in January so you will have plenty time to think about it before you actually get the surgery.

Many many people get approved after being denied first and usually peer to peer works very well in that case. I really hope you get approved. Let us know.

Why go against what your doctor told you this early out? Not to sound rude, but there are rules in place for reasons. No, it may not have bothered you, but you knew going into this that things would be off limits... some of them for months, some forever. The taste of cake, or a chip or two, or a piece of garlic bread may not bother you either, but if you start 'breaking the rules' only a few days out of surgery, you are setting yourself up for failure down the road.
The first year is the easy part... following the rules are to set you up for success after the honeymoon phase is over.

As much as I would have loved to have just made up my mind and then had the surgery the next week, I am grateful for this 6 month period. (No, I'm not crazy, lol!) I've had time to adjust both mentally and physically to what's about to happen to me. I have slowly weaned myself off of caffeine, bread, and am now working on sugar. That way when I start my two week pre-op diet, my body wont go into such a shock. I have a small business decorating wedding cakes etc, so I have to perfect frostings and other recipes now so that I wont have to be taste testing them after surgery. Through all of the tests that I went through I had a cancer scare, and that brought me further in my faith than I ever thought about going. So, actually, I am not complaining about the 6 month wait. I only have one more weigh in appointment with my PCP in 10 days and then see if I am approved. Right now, I can actually say that I am healthier both mentally and physically than I was 6 months ago!
