RJC5197 got a reaction from charsarie in Digestive problems many years after gastric bypass - help needed
I had the same issues after about 6 years with my VBG, but that was done 20 years ago.
I feel great with the revision to RNY, but something did need to be done years ago, but I never found a Dr that could help till last year.
I feel the medical knowledge is much better today, and hope you can find a Dr. that can really get to the bottom of it soon.

RJC5197 got a reaction from BigUtahMan in Question for lifters: How are you increasing your caloric intake?
It is my understanding that to gain muscle, there must be a surplus to build new tissue with. I find that determining the maintenance level and adding a few hundred or so cals in Protein and cals works well. Too much, even Protein, will cause excessive fat gain.
When I was lifting heavy for body building, My best results came from following the right macros and volumes. Yes I did gain some fat with muscle, but kept it to a min, then had to cut for competition. (This was many years ago)
I found a great resource in the book and series "Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle " and follow most of its diet directions today and can see my fat reducing slowly, while making small muscle gains.
Because we have had overweight issues and had WLS, it is important to target our plan to us. For me I have to stay lower carb (Under 60 grams a day) while losing fat. Anything higher, I stall or start gaining fat weight, not muscle.
Good Luck and have fun.

RJC5197 got a reaction from daisy63 in Has anyone tried vitamin patches
I have been using them for over 6 months and just ended my 2nd raft of blood tests.
Everything for me is 100% levels.
Note: I also have less restriction than many that had RNY, and can eat whatever I choose, and no problems with any types of foods, so have no issue with keeping my calories up and focused on key nutrition. (I avg 2000 cals a day, due to the levels of my workouts)
For others that have more restrictions, and eat very low calories a day, they may not be enough.

RJC5197 reacted to James Marusek in Understanding the mechanics of fat cells
According to the internet:
Adipose tissue, or fat, is an anatomical term for loose connective tissue composed of adipocytes. Its main role is to store energy in the form of fat, although it also cushions and insulates the body.
Excess adipose tissue (fat cells) can lead to problematic changes in metabolism, blood sugar control and blood pressure. Recently scientist have been exploring the role of fat cells acts on the brain to signal satiety (hunger control).
More recently, researchers have been delving into the mechanisms that adipose tissue uses to affect other parts of the body. A recent report in the journal Nature investigates one possible source of such control. To describe the study we have to define a couple of terms:
microRNA (miRNA): small (19-22 nucleotides long) segments of RNA that do not code for Proteins. There are many different types of miRNAs in the circulation and in different tissues, and they have various functions in the body. In general, they act to prevent translation of mRNAs and thus decrease the production of the corresponding proteins.
Dicer: an enzyme found in adipose as well as other tissues that processes miRNAs — without it miRNAs aren't produced.
Led by Dr. C. Ronald Kahn of the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard University, researchers bred so-called 'knockout' mice that lacked the Dicer enzyme in adipose tissue specifically. These adipose-tissue-specific Dicer knockout (ADicerKO) mice did not produce the usual complement of miRNAs found in normal mice, showing that adipose tissue is responsible for making a large number of the circulating miRNAs. And this is important, because the presence of such miRNAs is associated with improvements in glucose tolerance and other beneficial metabolic changes.
Indeed, the ADicerKO mice exhibited a decrease in brown adipose tissue (the most metabolically active type), as well as an increase in insulin resistance. However, when both brown and white adipose tissue from normal mice was transplanted into the knockout mice, they began to produce the miRNAs, demonstrating the importance of the adipose tissue in circulating miRNA production.
In addition to their work with the mice, the investigators also compared miRNAs from patients with lipodystrophy [1] with those from control people. They found that the patients with lipodystrophy had lower levels of over 200 different miRNAs compared to the controls.
Thus, both the animal and human data suggest an important role for adipose tissue in the regulation of metabolism, and may indicate an important avenue for future research into the roles of Dicer and miRNAs in the obesity-linked derangement of blood pressure, blood glucose regulation and insulin resistance.

RJC5197 reacted to MissKay in Stalled
8 days is nothing, don't hate me! I say that because stalls are usually longer, and are normal. If you're only 3 weeks out, your body is also still healing. My advice is weigh once a week, and take measurements. Even if the scale doesn't move, chances are you're losing inches still. It will move again (I've stalled for 2 months before, so I feel ya). Just keep eating the right things, get in your fluids, and keep moving. Adding more/longer exercise will help, especially if you're not super active/mobile for the rest of the day. But usually weightloss is 80% what you put in your mouth and 20% exercise and moving. The stalls will break!

RJC5197 reacted to My Bariatric Life in Bariatric Eating: What to Eat Forever and Ever
Knowing what we need to do can quickly overturn the impulse to do what we want to do. We can reprogram our conditioned responses to food, which likely led to us being morbidly obese, with new positive Bariatric Eating habits.
If asked what your long-term weight loss goals are, you would probably give positive, upbeat responses. It would be a shock to hear that your intention is to gain back every pound you lost over the course of the next 5 years.
But it happens.
Unfortunately, any bariatric surgery fails in the long-term when not followed-up with a weight loss maintenance plan. Persons who fail to make the necessary dietary changes after bariatric surgery frequently regain much of the weight they have lost, particularly around the 5-year mark. Read, “Bariatric Surgery is Just the First Step.”
Bariatric Eating Made Simple
When we change our anatomy through bariatric surgery, many of those old dietary rules and plans can do more harm than good. For our bariatric tool to work best, we need to be very aware of what we eat to get proper nutrition. There are three simple points that you need for smart bariatric eating. Read, “Bariatric Eating: Getting Back on Track.”
Drinking and Eating after Bariatric Surgery
How long we should wait before and after eating to drink again? There’s a lot of confusion around drinking and eating after bariatric surgery. It’s important to separate fact from fiction when it comes to drinking and eating after bariatric surgery. Get the Top 5 Tips in “Eating and Drinking Do’s and Don’ts.”
Push Back Against Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is an attempt to erase discomfort with food. Many people use food to relieve stress only to find that it is not much of a solution. Emotional eating will not provide the long-term remedy we want. We need to shake off failed habits and try something new. Read, “Steer Clear of Emotional Eating.”
Bariatric Eating: The Bottom Line
Knowing what we need to do can quickly overturn the impulse to do what we want to do. We can reprogram our conditioned responses to food, which likely led to us being morbidly obese, with new positive bariatric eating habits.

RJC5197 reacted to BigViffer in Ideas for pre and post workout supplements
At this stage of the game, there is no need for supplementation. You aren't going to be performing at a level that will require BCAA'S or lucine or anything like that.
What you will need is a complex carb like shredded wheat, bran or oatmeal. A second of those will give you a safer and more natural source of energy.

RJC5197 reacted to asantiago in Eating TOO much??
Hello. Yes as time goes by you will be able to eat a little more. I am a year post op and I notice also that I been wanting to eat more than before. Just remember to eat slowly and once your body gives you signal that you are getting or are full, stop eating or you will vomit. I have had many issues from day 1 and trust me I don't not want any an anyond owing through what I been through. You will be ok. Eat good foods and eat in mallet frequent meals if need to. Congratulations on your weight loss and keep up the good work. People will have up and downs with weight loss but if you eating right and exercising will help. That is something I have to do more. Best of luck.

RJC5197 got a reaction from Vinasu in Calories counts? or just let your body tell you?
Plan and track everything, and stick to the plan.
Without that we have no real control over the volume and macros we take in.
A little slip of the wrong food can add thousands of calories, and if it is simple carbs, our body will crave even more, not less.
(Sugar addition is perfect example)
I had RNY, but my Son had Sleeve, and as soon as he stopped tracking and controlling the volume and macros, he started gaining weight. He has no real way of knowing what he is actually eating, nor what his body really needs to maintain, let alone lose the gained weight.

RJC5197 reacted to Vinasu in Calories counts? or just let your body tell you?
I count every calorie. Letting my body tell me when to stop got me into this mess.
Yes, sometimes I'm still hungry. That's when I serve my Protein on a bed of spinach, riced cauliflower, or miracle noodles.
To lose weight, you must be consuming fewer calories than you are burning. Tracking calories helps me be certain of this.

RJC5197 got a reaction from MrsSugarbabe in Increasing Calories to change set point
Yes I have with good results.
From severe calorie deficit for months, I stalled, and could not gain any muscle weight. Only losing muscle mass. I increased my calories for a few days (Maintenance level) then down to 30% deficit from it, and now even though actual bathroom the scale is not moving, my muscle mass is increasing and my fat levels are going down. My scale says I have 15 lbs. more to lose to goal, but muscle/Fat ration says 5 lbs. only of fat to lose, and my cloths fit like that too.
We have to eat to fuel our workouts. For some that do not exercise or only a little a increase for a day will help some, but if muscle loss keeps happening, our metabolism will go to a crawl because it does not need to be revved up.
The more fat a person needs to lose, the more and longer a deficit can be in place before metabolism is affected much.
Note: Every person is different and responds differently. It takes a lot of trial and error to get it right, and also our body constantly adapts so what we did one week, may not be what works a few weeks later.
Good luck.

RJC5197 reacted to The New Kel in Egg & Cheese Bites recipes- Delicious protein!
Hi all!
I am 4 months post sleeve. My tummy still prefers softer Protein. I went to Starbucks and had their Egg Bites. They are delicious! This inspired me to create my own version at home. My version is made in muffin tins and baked since I don't have a Sous Vide cooking device. They turned out so good! And you can add fun stuff to make them even tastier. Recipe follows:
For 5-6 Egg Bites (I eat only one at a time but they store well in the fridge, so I have them for the whole work week), you will need:
6 eggs
1/3 cup half & half (or whole milk)
1/4 cup cheese- I use Gouda, but any kind will do.
Dash of salt & pepper
Add ins: I use green onions, roasted red bell pepper and crisp bacon pieces and cream cheese. (You could also use spinach, kale, green chilies, turkey sausage, the sky is the limit!)
Muffin tin
food processor or blender
Process:
Preheat oven to 325. Spray Pam into 6 muffin tins.
Put the eggs, milk or cream, and cheese in a food processor or blender. Whirl and blend until egg mixture is light and fluffy, about 30 seconds.
Pour mixture into a bowl, and stir in green onion, bell pepper, bacon pieces or any other ad-ins you love.
Spoon mixture into muffin tins, leaving a half inch from the top of each cup.
Super yummy extra: At this point, I add a bit of cream cheese into each cup. I use about the size of a marble of cream cheese. I LOVE how these taste with this extra kick!
Put them in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until semi-firm. Let them cool before popping them out of the cups.
Nutrion (per one egg bite) Protein= 11, Carbs= 2, Calories= 215*
The calories could be cut back (if desired) by using lower fat cheeses and milk and skipping the cream cheese).
