ocgirl15 got a reaction from heidikat72 in BMI of 21 getting gastric sleeve... thoughts?
Eating disorders are a reason that VSG is not approved for obese people. People get therapy to deal with eating disorders BEFORE surgery is approved. Most importantly you can still binge eat with the sleeve. It isn't even difficult.

@Babbs... I agree 100%. I cringe at how my parents dealt with this. I am still damaged! I will not do that to her. I am going to push the pediatrician to do some blood work. I know I want her thyroid checked. She also has a newly diagnosed anxiety disorder and hypothyroidism runs in the family. not sure hormone testing at her age would help. I know looking back I had signs of some PCOS as a teenager but she is only 9. Also this could all be a normal part of puberty. Worrying is just a part of parenting.

How high? Your post op instructions should have a note to call your surgeon if it gets higher than a certain point. They would want to know just in case it is a post op infection and not a cold. Keep your fluids up. If it is a cold it has to run its course. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a very good friend that had bypass at 20. She is now 40. That operation allowed her to LIVE! I also encourage you to pursue it. These hurdles and obstacles are just part of the process for most of us. The regret I typically hear from WLS patients is that they wish they hadn't waited so long. I am also happy you have so much support from your family. That is awesome!

Following and very curious. I was about to get reduction because of back pain before I decided on WLS. 40/42 DDD before WLS. On a 5'1 frame! Yikes! I was sure insurance would pay. Now I am 34/36 C/D. Skin fills most of my bra[emoji34]. I even wonder if I have enough breast tissue to manage a B if I got a lift. So I know you need to remove so much tissue to get a reduction and have insurance pay. Does skin tissue count? How much tissue to qualify as a reduction and get insurance to pay? There is no way I can afford it without help. But I know it costs about 7000 here out of pocket. So that helps. My boobs give a new meaning to the term deflate gate!

I am actually the mother of a pre-teen gaining weight and I am very very concerned. I would never have thought to ask the question here ...but here it is. I am at a loss of what questions to ask her doctor, what tests to requests. Most importantly how do I deal with this issue with her when she is already sensitive and self conscience about her changing body. Dr don't seem to be concerned. I know my own parents intervention at this age was seen by me as criticism and their efforts had the opposite effect. Boy I don't want to do more damage than good. I also don't want her to get to the point of needing WLS. [emoji20]

This is just my opinion and assumption. There a reason you can't find any info on cocaine use after WLS.... Because it has never been studied and nobody can give you a clear answer if it is or is not safe. Also most WLS don't do it after surgery. Probably even your doctors can only give a best guess which is not to do it just in case. It is an unknown. Of the drugs out there it isn't known for a great safety record and purity and "real content" will always be unknown. You might find a few WLS patients say I did it and I am still alive but that does not prove you will be ok. Not judging just trying to give food for thought.

ocgirl15 got a reaction from saerwi in Ketosis - How safe is it?
I would talk to your doctor to make sure it is safe for you. For most it is very safe but there are exceptions to that and only your doctor knows your underlying health conditions. Assuming it is safe it worked wonders for me. I got to goal weight in about 7 months. I am no longer in ketosis but most of my carbs are veggies, fruit and some potatoes. No wheat sugar or rice. I still keep my carb lower than the average person and Protein first. Beating the carb addiction has changed my life!

First, I applaud you for wanting to get your health under control now and not waiting. As for the 6 months - I also had a 6 month medically supervised period required by my insurance. I'm thankful for it. It gave me time to get all the testing done (testing that will give the surgeon all the info he needs to make sure your surgery goes safely) and let me work on starting the lifestyle changes before surgery - both eating changes, activity changes and mental/emotional changes. Trust me - that will make your recovery process so much easier (I was 442lbs last december when I started the process and then had surgery this past june). You can do your 6 months medical weight management with your PCP, but if your bariatric center is close it might be better to do it through them especially if they have a registered dietician on staff that you would meet with every month. The bariatric center will know exactly how each of the monthly visit reports needs to be written up to satisfy the insurance company. And meeting with a registered dietician will let someone with some knowledge review your food diary and help make suggestions.
Start using a program like myfitnesspal now just to see what your baseline eating habits are. Some people don't like to log, I find it valuable for me. It helps me be accountable to myself! and when you see it there in front of you, it makes it easy to see the things you need to cut out of your diet or things you need to adjust. Logging and meeting with the dietician monthly (as well as starting some very mild activity) helped me lose 78lbs before surgery.
And finally, this is as much a mental change as it is anything else. If you can find a counselor who works with obese patients or bariatric patients (your bariatric center may have some they can recommend) start meeting with one. They can help you work through the root of your overeating as well as help you come up with different coping mechanisms other than turning to food. Plus, going through this process in general tends to cause a lot of other emotional issues to come to the surface so you'll need someone to help you through that.
I am so glad your family is supportive - it is important to have at least a couple people in you life supporting you on this lifelong journey!
