My name is Jojo and I am 55 days post surgery. I had Gastric Bypass surgery on June 25th 2015 and so far i have lost 70lbs. I decided to have my surgery because i almost or literally died on August 31st 2013. I've always been big and have always been ok with myself and have felt comfortable but on this day it was enough.. i was rushed to UC Irvine hospital after having a seizure. Upon arriving at the hospital my heart stopped 4 different times in one hour, thankfully each time the Dr's were able to bring me back. Even though they were able to bring me back i fell into a coma for almost 2 weeks. The reason for my seizures was i went in to diabetic shock. My kidney's failed and machines were keeping my organs working. After waking from a coma I spent 1 month in the hospital and on dialysis for 2 months. Dr's in the hospital advised me that i needed to have weight loss surgery or i wouldn't live much longer. At this time i weighed 360lbs. After beginning the process to have surgery i finally was approved and had my first dr.'s visit july 13th 2014. after a year of tests, classes, dr.'s visits and psychiatrist visits i finally got my surgery date and had my surgery on June 25th 2015. What a life changing experience it has been and definately not the easy way out like I've heard over and over. The hardest things for me so far has been the mental aspect of things but I have been trying my hardest and doing my best to keep on the right path because I am not only grateful for still being alive but also for this new beginning and journey through my Gastric Bypass.

congrats on making a tough decision
    (one that i agree with)
    glad you aren't delaying surgery
you are putting yourself on the front burner
    where you belong
    as others have pointed out
if you start to postpone for this reason, or another
something will come up next time, and next time etc
who knows when and if you will ever get the surgery
don't know if there is a "perfect" time for surgery
best of luck to your daughter and "newbies" to arrive
your family, daughter, grandkids et al also will benefit from your improved health and happiness too
you are on the road to a healthier, happier, longer life
    who deserves it more
    good luck next month
    speedy recovery

I actually met with Dr. Zeni today and he is nice quiet gentleman. my surgery date is September 16th. I work for the U and I am not sure of they are a center of excellence however Dr. zeni's practice is. he has done over 900 surgeries to date.

I'm feeling really confident this morning. We celebrated daughter hitting week 25 yesterday. With each day the babies get stronger. Hopefully my surgery will be without incident and I will be able to move and breath so much better. I tell you its a challenge just to park and get up to the hospital room to see her.
I moved 6 months ago, the back of the property is very hilly. At the bottom of the hill there is a lake. I've not been able to walk down that far. That is one of my goals.
I have told my siblings of my surgery and sworn them to secrecy regarding my 90 yo mom. Its been kind of freeing to share this plan with people after having it under my hat since March. And to hell with their opinions. I refuse to allow judgements to affect my process.
Thanks for your support. It really put me at ease.

Had a long talk with daughter yesterday and we have decided to roll the dice and have the surgery as planned on Sept. 9.
I'm going to spend the next couple of weeks getting my ducks in a row here at home.
    Two things on my agenda.....
    1. What is the best little blender (those bullet kind) to buy? I've been pricing them and the prices are all over the place.
    2. Whats your favorite source of liquid Protein. I'm sure the stuff my dr.s office sells is super expensive.

I'm scheduled for my sleeve surgery Sept. 9. It will include gall bladder removal.
Complication.....daughter is in hospital with bed restriction, she is 25 weeks pregnant and has a ruptured amniotic sac on Baby A, she is expecting twins. She has been in the hospital three weeks already and as long as she doesn't go into labor she could be there 60 more days before they will induce. (Oct. 11).
I live three hours to hospital. She needs my support. Is it feasible to think that after one week recoup post surgery i will be able to drive that far (will I have the energy?)
I don't have to leap tall buildings with a single bound but i do need to be available to support my daughter. If these babies decide to make an early appearance. I know the babies will be in the hospital for awhile. We had a family meeting and everyone wants me to go ahead but that little voice that everyone tells you to listen to is yelling at me to cancel. Will i be able to focus on food prep?
It would be nice if I could do something for myself ONCE. but life is messy sometimes.
I just don't know what the right answer is.
Also wondering if I will have to go thorough with all the stuff to re-quailfy with my insurance company if i should cancel.
There is a good chance that one or both of these babies will be born with big complications. Will I be able to pay enough attention to myself and still help my daughter?
    Looking for a crystal ball I guess : > (

Sounds to me like your blood sugar level is low and then spiking. My husband (mr. skinny) has hypoglycemia and those are two of his symptoms I watch for so I can know to administer glucose.

My date is Sept. 9. I'm going straight out liquid on my pre surgery diet. I'm scared also. Really looking forward to being on the other side of the surgery.
I am trying to focus on little things that will be easier. Maybe we should make a list......shoes will fit better, bras will fit better, i will fit better

I had my surgery date moved from July 30 to August 6 by the surgeon's manager and I got angry even over that one week. That is a week I'll never have back to enjoy my life at the other end.
Now, more to the point. My dad was in the same hospital as where I had my surgery being treated for a very serious respiratory condition, and is waiting to become stable enough to have stomach surgery. I was able to help him out with needs in his room while I was still a patient in the hospital and not really tolerating Water that well. I am currently doing everything for him despite working three hours away from home, and driving isn't an issue for me, despite the fact that, like you, I do feel very sluggish. I think when something is as important as your safety on the road, you are better able to concentrate despite diminished energy reserves. If you really didn't have the wherewithal to drive safely, chances are you'd be facing hospitalization for lack of nourishment. Unless you feel your abdominal pain exacerbated, just go ahead and do it, and continue to follow all other rules that do not detract from your ability to take care of your daughter.
I think most of the physical limitations are resolved by 72 hours following surgery, and after that, it is mostly psychological. However, listen to your body, and still build up your activity gradually, and don't try to find ways to do things that don't feel quite right the first time. They will come in time.

You will be so sad if you don't get the surgery. Don't put it off. I was out in 1 day and the first 4 weeks I was weak but you will never get your surgery if you put everyone's needs before yours. You will still be able to be there for her!

I can totally relate to this!! My mother was diagnosed in march of this year with bowel cancer, congestive heart failure, and a host of other things( that were related to her obesity in her 30-40's) so when I got my call for surgery for June 8th, I was sooo torn! Should I do it or put it off until who knows when?
Long story short, I went ahead with my surgery, and siblings and hired help took up the slack from me while I was recovering, which was only the 2 weeks and then could do moderate physical activity with no heavy lifting. Now 8weeka out and less weight, it is soooo much easier to care for her as she progresses. I am sooo glad I didn't listen to thst "little voice" thst was teibg me to put it off until later. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery and new grandchildren!!!!!

Just to add on to what everyone else has said - the timing to have the surgery really does seem to be now.
As has been said - there will ALWAYS be obstacles and things that come up. As the old saying goes, if someone waits until 'the right time' or 'the right finances' to have children, there would never be any children born. The same applies here.
From another perspective - you said the children may likely be in the hospital for a bit, and one may have complications. So when would be a better time to have surgery - now, when they are in the hospital under close medical supervision, and only your moral support, not your physical attention is needed? Or later, when the children are home, and your daughter is trying to tend to them, and needs your physical help caring for two babies, one with possible medical needs? Seems to me like you should RUN to the hospital to get surgery ASAP!
Good luck to you, the new mommy, and the new littles!

I would have the surgery done. If you can get others to help, until you are about three weeks post op, You will feel so much better while you are even beginning to lose the weight.
Only you can decide what to do, that's just my opinion, hoping you make the right call for you!

I say continue as planned, for several reasons which were already mentioned above. Everyone is different & recovery will depend on your own body. However, I was up & walking 2 hours after surgery. I only used my 'happy button' for medication a few times (and for a prior spine injury that I take pain meds for), and took nothing after day of surgery. I was in the hospital 3 days & I was driving myself the day after I was released. In the end, I felt better a week after surgery than I did a week before!
Best of luck to you both!
