I am borrowing from a different post cant remember the author and I am paraphrasing but:
I have been responsible for my nutrition and in charge for years. The net result of which is that I am morbidly obese and out of control. My philosophy was all things in moderation, the problem was my concept of moderation was extremely skewed. That moderation brought me Diabetes, Gout, High Cholesterol and probably liver and kidney damage.
So now I have sleeve, a NUT and a Dr all deciding as a team that are in charge of my nutrition and low and behold I am dropping weight, Diabetes is gone, Cholesterol is lower and liver is probably regenerating. If it is all the same I think the team probably makes better decisions than me where my nutrition is concerned.
You are free to eat and drink whatever you want and you can probably find a Physician that will tell you it is ok, but the vast majority wont. Why does it matter what they say you are in charge of your body do what you want after all you have to live with the consequences.

There are people here that drink diet soda. I don't think any of their doctors are okay with it though.
Drinking diet soda isn't going to kill you but if you have to drink soda, at least drink the good stuff sweetened with Stevia.
Also if you haven't had surgery yet and you are already thinking of ways to eat around your sleeve, well, good luck.

This reminds me a lot of the "how soon after surgery can I start smoking cigarettes again" question. The answer is never. The answer is never for a variety of reasons. You know the reasons, everyone else knows the reasons, and yet you will always get a few people here on the forums looking to be told it's okay to do. It is simply NOT okay, just like eating cake isn't okay after surgery and taking NSAIDS isn't okay after surgery.
However, it's your body. No one has any right to tell you what to do with it. Even the surgeon's orders end where your own decisions begin. Can you drink diet soda without getting sick? Maybe... some people can, as you've read above. Should you be drinking soda, smoking, drinking booze frequently, taking NSAIDS, eating donuts for Breakfast? Of course not. you already know the answer to your own question, and you may be hard-pressed to find many people here who are going to pacify you and tell you it's okay. The fact is, a couple of people here saying "Yeah I do it and I'm fine" does not even being to measure up to and be an argument against the multitude of biological and scientific reasons it is not safe or healthy.
In the end, you've got to make your own decisions. If you decide to eat or drink something that can (and probably will) be harmful in the long run, then you're also going to have to deal with the consequences. Whatever you decide, I truly wish you nothing but health and happiness. I know how hard it is to go through this huge change and not even have the little comfort food/drinks we used to love. Good luck!

I am so sad for you, but look at the bright side, if you can swing it, it's going to cost a lot less thrown in with a hernia repair that is covered. That means no second anesthesia charges, and they can cover the things like sponges and sutures and that stuff too. It'll bring the cost down really to just the surgeon's fees for the vsg so hopefully the surgeon will work with you to get that number as far down as humanly possible.

I went to a sushi restaurant and I ordered a California roll with no rice. I had to explain like a dozen times. I eventually just said I was allergic to rice and just needed seaweeds wrapped veggies and crab meat. LOL

My biggest mistake is not realizing how monumental losing weight would change my life. My life before was very basic and routine because it had to be. I couldn't function really and now, there are lots of fights and arguments because I'm not ok just sitting on the sofa starring at my husband play video games for hours and the kids run around from place to place while my life burns away. Even the best relationships will have periods where you have to renegotiate your life together. I mean, we aren't getting a divorce or anything, but I was not expecting to have to fight for the right to be allowed to go to the mall or go for a walk because it's not what he likes to do and he's still stuck in our old life cycle and I'm trying to make a new one.

I'm not a doctor, but based on the limited info given, I think it's probably the extra calories. After WLS your body will never be able to handle a full calorie load without gaining weight, because the surgery itself does alter our metabolism as well. You would either need to substantially exercise more or cut back down to prevent weight gain.
