JenniferP1 reacted to ButterflySeoul in Where do you buy clothes?
I've been "shopping" in the back of my closet for things that had been too small lol.. and was lucky enough that a neighbor of mine brought over a huge tote of clothes in varying sizes that I'm starting to get into. Other than that- it's been ebay, because I can't seem to coordinate my schedule to getting to a consignment shop.. I don't want to spend a lot of money on things that I might only be wearing for a couple weeks.

It depends on your surgical team's rules. My team's rules were (for all foods, not just refried beans)
puree stage (weeks 4 - 8): max 3 tablespoons of food
soft food stage (months 2 - 6): max 3 oz. of food

Question for those following the Keto Diet. I'm curious as to how much fat you consume.
I'm getting in roughly 600 to 800 calories a day, 19 to 25 carbs, 75+ Protein, and roughly 30 grams of fat.
I've had some say that's too much, and others tell me it's way too low.
    Any thoughts/advice?
    Please and thank you.

It happened to me as well. I know everything cannot be attributed to surgery but I couldn't count that as coincidence. I live in the northeast and my mouth was so painful during the past Winter. I cannot have more than 2 ice pops at a time or it's painful. I mentioned it my Dentist and they more thought it was reflux related and wearing on the enamel. I would be interested in what others have to say.

JenniferP1 got a reaction from yguess in What does "full" feel like
Full feels very different post-op. Once you move to more solid foods you should feel it. But it's not in your tummy anymore -- instead it's at the top of my stomach / lower esophagus. I can only eat 4 or 5 bites before feeling an uncomfortable pressure in my chest. I also get the hiccups when I eat too much or too fast. I am very grateful for my restriction -- almost 7 months out and down 92 lbs.

FYI -- The pill is unreliable after bariatric surgery, your surgeon should have advised that you use a second form of birth control. Once I learned that, I stopped taking the pill entirely.

Your health is your personnel business . You don't need to share your surgery with anyone. Don't feel like it's a lie because you choose not to tell every person . That's your right!!! At times wished I could go back and not tell anyone about my surgery. When we give out personnel information to people. Some of these people feel they can ask all type of personnel question that's not their business . But I have myself to blame for that but quickly set them straight now. Good luck !

Has anyone tried this diet post surgery? I've begun doing some reading and bypass is a contraindication for the diet. Anyone know why?
I was 432 at the time of surgery, and reached a low of 298, but have been residing between 303 and 310. Any insight would be great. I have been noticing some old eating patterns creeping in and am working to address them. I have a goal of being between 250-275, but have been stuck for months now. I will be two years post op this coming October. I don't think I have utilized this site enough, and I don't really have a support system of other patients to bounce things off. My wife is great and my friends too, but no one really knows what I've gone through or what I am going through...
thanks for taking the time to read.

Yes, follow Garth Davis, the bariatric surgeon. I do, he is heavily onto the vegetarian/vegan thing. I am quite close to vegetarianism. Influence of a lot of vegetarians I work with (some do eat chicken, they are from different Indian states, so I don't think it has to do with that).

Micah, I had the gastric bypass and eat a predominantly vegan diet... though I do occasionally still have some lean chicken and dairy. My surgeon (Garth Davis) advocates a mostly vegetarian/vegan diet... and recently wrote a book call proteinaholic. If you're on Facebook, I'd recommend liking his page, and also joining the WLS Vegetarian group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1646059515642538/

I am getting there. I recently watched Forks Over Knives, and came away disgusted. My grandpa was a farmer, and even though I knew that our meat and dairy does not really come from family subsistence farms anymore, I had my head in the sand about the brutality it takes to get meat and eggs to the table. My goal is to get to where I don't eat (or wear) anything that comes from a creature with a mother and a face.
This is a total upheaval of the way I have eaten all my life and seems to be bariatric heresy. But I am learning about plant based Proteins and how to get my Protein requirements from those. My new diet includes more Beans, spinach, and nuts. The next step will be to experiment with tofu, that thing which I hate. There must be some creative tasty ways to make it taste like something.
I had never peeked in on the vegan/vegetarian forum, but I think it's time.

    Hi Micah,
There is a vegetarian/vegan group somewhere on this site. I was almost vegan (ate cheese but no other dairy) when I had the sleeve on 4 april 2016. For the first 6 weeks I drank milk to reach required Protein levels, plus lots of parmesan cheese. I am first week on solids now and have dropped the milk but still eating dairy for Protein, eg yoghurt, cottage cheese, cheddar and eggs. I hope in time I can move back to an almost dairy free state and then finally a vegan lifestyle. I have had to make compromise in order to give my body the best chance at healing. No complications or sickness at all but I only get 40g protein when I should have 60g protein a day. Introducing tofu, lentils, Beans etc into my diet now.

I am wondering if there are other vegetarians/vegans who are getting or have gotten sleeved? I was sleeved 04/18/2016 and found the process a little more difficult because I am a vegetarian. I am also a nurse and thought that it would be a good research project. I would love some input and anything that I use would be kept anonymous. The direction that I am heading with this is to provide a guide for pre and post op vegetarian eating with the gastric sleeve.
Feel free to answer me on this board and I will give you contact information. Maybe this can benefit someone you know who is getting the sleeve and is having trouble knowing what they can and cannot eat.
    Micah

Just curious... After your sleeve, what are foods you cannot tolerate now that you could before and vice versa? I've read a lot about people becoming lactose intolerant and I was just curious how many people have experienced that and/or other issues.
    Thanks!

JenniferP1 got a reaction from Dfw74 in Anyone not telling anyone about their surgery?
I told nobody except my live-in BF. I'm extremely private and prefer not to discuss health issues. I told work I needed to have surgery (they can't ask what kind) and took 2 weeks PTO. I was worried about having to answer a bunch of questions from friends & family but it's amazing how little people seem to pay attention to what I'm eating when out to dinner, etc. Only waitstaff seem concerned and I usually say "I had a big lunch" or "I'm looking forward to yummy leftovers for lunch tomorrow." And even though I've lost almost 75 lbs in 5 months nobody seems shocked nor asks a lot of questions. I would advise newbies to be very selective with whom you tell, because you can't un-tell afterwards and there is no guarantee that folks won't be concerned, etc. We have lived most of our lives battling weight issues and we are the ones that have done the extensive research -- others who are not in the same position may simply not understand our choice.

JenniferP1 reacted to FocusOnMeNow in Fat free, low far, light or regular?
I am gastric sleeve and I do full fat everything. In fact, if I am having a weight loss stall, I just eat more bacon and it seems to get me losing again. What I stay away from is sugar, flour, rice and "bad carbs". I do have Beans and smashed potatoes (mashed with the skins on) because unlike sugar and flour...beans and potatoes (with skins on) have lots of Fiber Vitamins (including potassium) and nutritional value (vs the purely empty calories from sugar and flour). Of course I do all things in moderation. Also you should be aware that many "light" or "low fat" or "fat free" items have added sugar or carbs to make up for the taste. That being said I do have a preference for light (not fat free) sour cream and light mayo...probably from years of eating it. Also with the light sour cream I am usually using it in my mashed potatoes with plenty of grass fed (Kerrygold Irish) butter, so there is already plenty of fat. Also since it's hard to get enough veggies I also purée some roasted cauliflower (fauxtatoes) and mix it about half and half with actual smashed potatoes. If you need more Protein in your purées you can also use high protein "Fairlife" milk and/or look for "Bone Broth" instead of regular chicken broth (or just add a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder to the mixture.

I'm in the early days with veggies, so my Fiber has come from a daily serving of Beans, usually refried. I am not carb-phobic. What @@rickm said is spot-on. Carbs aren't evil, but highly processed foods are problematic on several levels. First, their glycemic effect (which is mitigated to some extent when eaten with protein), second their nearly complete lack of nutrition, and third their lack of satiety.
I have always done better with food I can recognize as food, as it's come out of the ground, so to speak. I do make exceptions for yogurt and cottage cheese, as their nutritional value is huge. I don't worry about the carbs in dairy. My daily carbs hover in the 40-60 range and it hasn't slowed me down.

Green veggies, Protein brownies, once a week maybe a low carb tortilla or a flat out rollup. I think Protein Bars being highly processed and extremely fake are for emergencies only, but I have one maybe once every 10 days. Mainly veggies for fiber.

    ...iceberg lettuce!
I'll be eight weeks out tomorrow, which means I'm tiptoeing toward "regular" food textures. And Like many of us, I've been missing crunch.
I'd made some chicken taco meat in the pressure cooker, so I got a bag of shredded iceberg leffuce. I put a pinch of lettuce on my mini-taco bowl.
It was delicious. It crunched. And it didn't fill me up! I've cautiously gotten to where I can put nearly 1/4 cup of lettuce shreds on my taco meat and still get all the meat portion in. And I get to crunch. Bliss!
Something that really made me hesitate over getting my sleeve is my love for salads. Now I have hope that I can adapt my love for salads in a way my sleeve can live with.
    It's the little things.
