So excited too, having my sleeve in June 30, I can't wait! I'm starting my pre-op diet next week. Not looking forward to no coffee :-( I'm also going to miss my occasional glass of wine. But I know in the long run it'll all be for my good!

I had my gallbladder removed at the same time as my sleeve because I had terrible pain from gallstones. My surgeon had no problem doing both together and did not mention the contamination issue. My procedure took about an hour for both. To me, it's better to just get everything done at the same time since you are already under anesthesia. Getting anesthesia is never fun so I would not want to do it the second time. All 3 procedures that you need are very simple.

I am having surgery on June 30. I work in a hospital and we had a co-worker do the bypass about 10 years ago and she gained most of her weight back. I decided to tell my husband and daughter, the people at work and basically anybody I run into. I have decided they probably already judge so let's give them something different to talk about. I decided I really do not care what anybody thinks or says. This is about me and if people think it is the easy way out...that is their opinion. I know there was no other option and my decision has nothing to do with them. I am finally going to take care of me. I am sure the first few weeks will suck but it will be worth it in the end. Nothing anybody says, good or bad matters this is my journey.

Hi Alex thanks for your advice, you have hit the nail on the head really.. ı have to be mentally prepared to not feel ashamed of having WLS and owning up to it (if it comes to that). Secrets always find a way of coming out. food and family occasions is such a big part of my life it will be impossible to hide chewing on one fork for ages! And then feeling full after 3/4 bites!! X

I'm struggling a bit with this, too...My husband and I are being sleeved together (6 weeks apart), and we've told our parents and a couple of close friends. I'm not sure about how to handle work, though. I think on some level, I'm still a little embarrassed that I've not been able to lose the weight on my own. While I know that this surgery isn't the "easy way out," I know there's still a negative stigma in the eyes of those who have never struggled with their weight. I guess I feel like I have to defend my decision, even though I know intellectually that it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

    Jay05,
That’s a tough position to be in – it’s a lot harder to go through WLS when you don’t feel comfortable sharing everything with your family. I have a couple of pieces of advice for you.
First, think about whom you will tell. You may not want to tell your family or close friends, but you need to have a support system. There will be tough times ahead. Maybe you can find a few close buddies here on BariatricPal – you can look for one in our General Weight Loss Surgery Forums here! – or maybe your surgeon can put you in touch with other WLS patients.
Second, keep in mind that however hard you try to not let anyone find out, someone is bound to find out about your surgery sooner or later. It may be before surgery, or it may be after surgery but before you’ve lost much weight, or it might be after you’ve lost a lot of weight. I’d suggest preparing yourself mentally for each case so you know what you’ll say and so you don’t get thrown off track.
Good luck, and remember we’re here for you for support for when you need it.

My surgery is Monday..... For the first month or two until I'm on more solid foods, I'll probably not do too many social events. In fact, some girls in my small circle of support are helping me with that. For instance, 7/2 is a friend's birthday, normally we would have a get-together at a local restaurant with about 15 people, all eating and drinking. But since she knew I couldn't come, or it would raise questions, she suggested we do the Comedy Club instead. That way, it won't be as noticeable that I'm not eating/drinking.
As for questions about my weight loss..... I'm eating a lot less/healthier and exercising more. Which is the truth!

I started out only telling my BFF, since I was required to have a responsible adult with me for the Upper Endoscopy to drive me home. I ended up telling 3 very close friends and my immediate family only. I need some support, although I'm not ready to make it common knowledge.
Luckily, I have to get my gall bladder removed at the same time I do the Sleeve, so anyone else that needs to know why I'm in the hospital or can't work, they think it's the gall bladder surgery.
The few people I did tell about the Sleeve, I've told them that mums the word. If anyone else finds out about it, I want it to be because I made the decision to tell them..... it's not up to them to tell everyone or gossip about it.
Since you will find that some support is good, only tell those that you want to tell..... it's your decision

Ok, first...you are NOT a failure, you are human....and none of us would be getting surgery if giving up food was that easy Second, forgive yourself and move one...what you ate is nothing...I did MUCH worse before my surgery and it turned out great....the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver...mine was still big and it was ok. Our surgeries are tools, not miracles...we live and learn....it's gonna take a while to get used to , well, everything Forgive yourself and love yourself ...accept what you can handle and move on

This topic interest me as well. Being a double mastectomy breast cancer survivor who opted for no implants, I have had the DIEP flap. Essentially, they took a blob of fat and skin from my tummy and made two breast mounds and attached them to my chest. So I have NO BREAST TISSUE. It's all fat! Transplanted fat! So I wonder what mine will do. I have reserved a final reconstruction/revision surgery (I've had 5) for after I loose weight. I really don't want big boobs. I'd be fine with not much at all if I were very thin. I'll keep you abreast!

I'm almost 8 months post op and I finally had a little breakdown yesterday because I realized I can and will meet my goal weight.
I thought, "Once I get under 200 I will be happy." While I did a little happy dance, I wasn't truly happy or convinced. I thought, "When I get to 180 I'll be happy." Then I got to 180 and it was very anti-climactic.
I mentioned to my mom my size 14's were starting to get baggy so she went through her closet and laid out a pile of 10/12's. I tried them on yesterday and they all fit. And I don't mean barely zipping up with muffin top. They looked great. My butt looked great. I finally got tears in my eyes and realized how far I had truly come. I'm only 18 pounds from my ultimate goal weight and if I decide to get a Tummy Tuck I could very well end up a 4/6. That blows my mind.
If you truly go into this understanding your success depends on the right mentality and use this surgery as a tool to help you reach your goals you WILL lose the weight. You will be successful. But you have to completely change the way you think about food. You don't live to eat, you eat to live.
I still struggle, and probably always will, with some trigger foods. Cake is one. Ice cream is another. They are a slippery slope for me and it's best (for me) to stay away from them.
If you need any help, advice or a listening ear along the way I'd be glad to help!

Simply put at the three-month mark, my nutritionist was just fine with caffeine. but not before, they want to make sure you aren't having issues with acids. But i start off my days now with a medium black iced coffee and use the coffee mate sugar-free Italian sweet cream, its like sugar and cream in one, without the sugar or milk fats. Also i sometimes use energy shots an hour before a workout on some days to help power me through my workout.
I have had no side effects from any of that. but best to wait for awhile.
As to alcohol. there are several reasons not to imbibe. Or at least not often.
    1. extremely high in calories. Even skinny girl drinks are loaded with sugar and calories. If you drink once or twice a week, you will not lose anywhere near what you could have without drinking, plain and simple. You have to make the decision is it worth the empty calories and the like, for a drink.
    2. Alcohol, like any liquid, passes very fast into your intestines and as a result, can hit your blood stream a lot faster and in higher concentrations than prior to surgery. The common nomenclature is that it is about 7 times more potent to a bariatric surgery patient.
    3. Bariatric surgery patients have a much higher risk of alcoholism. Whether it is through addiction transference. i.e. food to alcohol, or through depression tendencies, and stress, or through the increased effects of alcohol in the blood ( see above), no one is sure, but the numbers do not lie.
    I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I really think this is the greatest support I have found so far. I am back in the saddle and ready to fight this demon. Also I will tell my counselor tomorrow. My NUT assured me that it's not as big of a deal as I am making it out to be. To many of your points it was steak not a sundae or cake! Hahaha. Surgery is still scheudled for the 30th. This is a great support system. Thanks again.

Pre-op diet cheating? I didn't really have a pre-op diet, except low fat low carb diet for 5 days prior to surgery. I've heard doctors are getting away from the 2 week liquid diets because it's just a little overkill. Your stomach only needs 8-12 hours to be empty prior to surgery actually happening. I suppose the pre-op diets condition you for how you will have to live for a few weeks after surgery, but don't beat yourself up over a few fries and some steak on the pre-op diet. Good luck on the rest of your journey!
