I had my RNY last Feb, but I got my gallbladder out Aug 2005. For 4 yrs I suffered from gallstones, until a stone blockage caused my liver to fail. I too had chest pains that seemed to mimic a mild heart attack or anxiety attack. It wasn't until I went into liver failure that a very attentive ER doc realize my gallbladder was sick. A bit over a month later my general surgeon was sitting by my bed in recovery telling me I was lucky to be alive. I had gangrene in my gall bladder and luckily it hadn't spread. Please demand an ultrasound of your abdomen before doing surgery. Ultrasounds can detect gallstones and sludge. Get well soon.

Hi All! I am 2 months post-op and having a difficult time getting in my Protein. I don't know about you, but the thought of Protein shakes makes me nauseous and frankly, I am burnt out on them. At the same time, I know they are a great way to get in a bunch of much needed protein. I whipped this up tonight and it is very delicious and filling. Not to mention I can't taste the Protein powder in it. Please enjoy!
    pumpkin Pie Protein Shake:
    1 cup 1% milk
1 scoop vanilla whey Protein Powder
    1/2 c. pumpkin
    1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
    1 tsp/ cinnamon
    2 graham cracker sheets
    1 cup ice
    Directions: Blend and enjoy!

Unlike you, I have been telling everyone. I know that haters are gonna hate and people will judge me, but I finally decided to just say "screw it." I have nothing to be ashamed of, and I am at the point where I really don't give a rat's ass what people think of me. Besides, I look at it this way, the more people hear about this wonderful technology we have, the less taboo it will become. I recently had a co-worker ask me all kinds of questions and said she has considered it because she suffers with her weight and is a diabetic. I told her to just do a lot of research and be prepared for a lifestyle change. WLS isn't for everyone, but if you go into it with an open mind and are willing to make sacrifices and change a few things, it's well worth it. Her response was "Well I'll just sit back and see how you do with it first. " LOL! People are funny. WLS is a very personal thing, but it's also very liberating to tell people. Just saying.

Just wanted to share a story about today's experience, (I am 6 weeks post op.) This morning at Breakfast i had a plum and less than 5 mins. after my first few bites, it got stuck and it came back up. At lunch I had a Dannon Light & Fit Cherry Greek Yogurt. Even though i tried to chew the cherries, they must have gotten stuck because nothing else would go down, and I ended up spitting up the yogurt. I have eaten other things today and they went down fine so I know it had to be the skin. I guess I can't eat anything with skins yet. Thanks for listening.

I don't know. You do need to wear a bathing suit. There are so many to choose from. I prefer a two-piece tankini. I get mine from Woman Within. They have some where you can choose the tops and bottoms separately. They also have swim shorts and cover ups. I haven't been buying many new clothes but I have bought two new bathing suits since my surgery. One size smaller than pre-surgery and one size smaller than that waiting in the wings.
The most important thing to do is swim.
I wore a bathing suit at my highest weight of 565 pounds.
For me, I personally don't care what other people think about how I look. I won't die of embarrassment, but it is a very real possibility that I could die of obesity.
Hopefully, once you realize how good it feels and how much you can move in the Water you will either forget about or not care about feeling like you look like a fool.

Like some others here, I have told everyone at work. They have all been very supportive, and have even talked to me about people they know who have had the surgery and were very successful. In the end, if people have bad things to say about it or are negative/nonsupportive, who cares? They haven't had to live my life, and I could care less what they think.
At least that's what people say

This is a very personal decision. Before the surgery, I only told a few people at work, including my boss. My fears weren't that I was ashamed that I had to "resort" to weight loss surgery because I was too weak to do it on my own or that people would think bad of me, etc. (all of the usual things that people think), but I didn't want people to have unrealistic expectations. I didn't want people to think that I was going to end up a model or that I would lose 100 pounds in a month.

Since I've returned back to work, anyone who asks will get the whole story. I love talking about it. But I don't want to make someone uncomfortable by talking about it if they don't want to hear it. Also, there are a number of obese co-workers and I don't want them to feel bad about themselves or jealous about my surgery. But I do want to be an advocate and a information resource for those who might be considering WLS.
There is one guy coworker who will ask me almost every day if I'm feeling ok. I'm guessing he probably thinks I've got something really bad, like cancer. I will have to talk to him soon, so he will be not so worried about me.
I'm five weeks post op and feeling wonderful. I'm down 50 pounds! My life has changed for the better and I'm too excited to keep this bottled up! And if I can help someone else feel the way I do, then that will be just frosting on the cake.
Now.....I purposely didn't tell my husband's sisters and their families. We see them a few times a year. My husband is close to his sisters and they talk on the phone and text all the time. We will see them at Thanksgiving and I'm looking for that "shock" factor. By then I should be about 80 pounds down. They will be so surprised! And you better believe I will tell them all about my surgery then.

yes they can come back - I've had two. But they tend to be an early complication - after the first 3 or 4 months, you'll probably be in the clear.

Glad they figured it out for you! I got really sick last week and went to the ER after 2 days of not keeping down food and Water and all they did was a CT scan, found nothing and sent me home. Kept vomiting the next day so my surgeon arranged EGD on the 4th day and found that I too had a stricture. Mine was very very small so they dilated it some but sent me to GI dr who I am told will have to do several dilations as they can only stretch it so far at a time. I was told to stick with liquids for a while. Just FYI in case they didn't tell you in the hospital. I have my 2nd dilation scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow 6 days after first). Hope to have some more info and will let you know if I find out anything of importance.

jennylew reacted to Dream4tc in Seroma
I was just at my surgeons office on Friday about that possibility. A seroma is a collection of Fluid that collects underneath the skin in the port area because basically it leaves an empty space. He said that my incision looked normal even though it was pink and warm. He told me that if it starts to drain clear fluid that to cover it with gauze. If the drainage was purulent, then to call right away but in the mean time to watch it. Wounds like that have to heal from the inside. Eat lots of Protein so it will heal faster. Keep clean. Healing just depends on so many things. If you are immunocompromised , it may take a bit longer. Example Diabetes will cause slower wound healing, also medications etc... Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it will heal quick.for you!
