    New 60+ Thread

twirl I don't think you are to old to get the lap band. I was 67 when I got my band and feel better every day. I have a number of medical problems and just had a nuclear stress and follow up blood work and both doctors said I was doing great. I started at 300 lbs and went into surgery at 265 and as of today I am 209 and it will be 1 year on new years eve. I even went back to work after being retired for two years. You must be proud of you age and go forward with any thing that will help you. If this will give you more time with your family and love ones go for it. Find a good Lap Band Surgeon and explain everything to them and listen to their advice. Best of luck and Gods Speed.

    New 60+ Thread

I'm 67 and will be 68 on the 22nd of this month. I had my surgery on new years eve and have lost more than 40 Lbs in the last eight months. I've had some problems but they were me doing something wrong. Eating to fast or not chewing to much, also eating during a stressful situation. Also I seen postings from people in there 70's that are doing will with the band. So let don't listen to people, do your home work and make the decision and go with it. I know I did and have never looked back or regretted it.

    Where's the support?

We have a large group at the South Texas Surgeons here in San Antonio. We have a very active web site and monthly meetings, both are very active. Check out the surgeons web site and it has a link to the support group. Don't let them get you down, there are a lot of us here to help.
  5. Just took my time on the walking. As it comes off the knees and back will let stop hurting and the stride will stretch out. Then you can add more and more to the distance. When I first started it was good to get through a mile at a good pace. The one thing that helped me the most was a suggestion from my youngest. Go buy you a real good pair of running shoes. She took me to New Balance and they fitted me with a pair of 768's with arched insteps. This really helped the legs and knees. The worst part of my surgery was the "Hard Rock" was at street level directly under my room. I was on the 19th floor but the aroma from the burgers came into my room and drove me crazy all night. All I could have was liquids and jello.
  6. Old Goat, Hang in there its worth the problems that are put in the way. I'm 67 and retired and have a beautiful wife and two daughters with their own families. Also have two grandsons and one grandaughter to keep me going. I am 6'1" and my heaviest was 300 Lb, with hight BP, a stent in RCA bad knees, and on 5 meds. I had my surgery on 12/31/07 at Nix Hospital in San Antonio, Tx. I am now at 213 and doctor has taken me off of 2 meds and reduced one to once a day. I now can walk my 4 miles with no pain in my back or knees and still get the honey do's done for the wife. As far as and old goat status, as the wight comes off the younger you act.

Hello everyone, I have not been around for a while. I felt so good I went back to work. It felt good after not doing anything but work around the house. It involved a lot of travel and some physical work also. I was doing really good until I started having some light headed spells. This was not good because I was on roofs and ladders a lot. I had to come home and check in with my doctor. Found out I've lost enough that my blood pressure was real low. We are working on the meds to see if we can get is regulated again. I will check in when I can. Hope everyone has a great summer. Gene

    I Had a Problem

I had a problem, my wife kept complaining my breath was bad and I had body odor since my Lap band surgery. I happen to mention it to my daughter who is a physical trainer and she said it is the fat your body is burning. She recommended I start taking Chlorophyll and mint. I started taking it the next day and the problem has gone away. I no longer have the body odor or bad breath.
  9. I slept on my stomach after the second night. The only problem I have is if I lift something and it rests on the port area it gets sore. This will sometime bother me when I lie on my stomach. Gene

So... what do you fellas do?

I retired after 35 years with Lockheed Martin as a military contractor. My last job for them was to design install and maintain an Audio Visual system in a multi-use facility. The system collected data from various equipments and we could record or display this in a number of locations. I tried retirement for two (2) years and got bored. I'm now doing catastrophic adjusting to stay busy.

    Lap Banding and Medicare

Hi Markie, Medicare took care of my surgery and yes you have to stay overnight. You also have to be in a COE, do some other required things. Good Luck, it is worth it. Gene

    What is "stuck" like?

I've been banded for two months and I just had my second fill yesterday. At dinner tonight I made some chicken tenders and was eating and talking to my grandson. All of a sudden I had a very sharp pain in my stomach and realized I was stuck. Boy I do not want to go through that again. Pain, Slym (sp) and pressure, I'm sipping some hot tea and it seems to be helping. I do not want to go through that again, it was not fun. I can see I have to take smaller bites and eat a lot slower. I guess it will be mushes for a couple of days for me. I don't want to stress anything for a couple of days. Gene

    Oldest Bander??

I'm over 67 and got my band on New Years Eve. I Think I'm healing at the same rate that most people do. The one problem I have is getting my butt out of the chair and into the gym. I just got my first fill and feeling some restriction I think. At least it feels different that before the fill. If your mom would get on line and come to this site there are a number of threads for Seniors. There are a number of us on here that she can talk to and get ideas from.

    Law enforcement thread

I'm not in Law Enforcement but when I got my band there was a guy there that was on the San Antonio PD. It's my understanding there are a number of officer on duty that have gotten the band and are on the streets protecting us everyday. When I was just starting the processing my surgeon said he had done the procedure on a number of the SAPD and they where doing great. Genea

    eating straight after a fill?

My Doctor want me to be on mushies after a fill and back on regular food the following day. He feels the stomach adjusts fast enough that a couple of meals will be enough to tell if you have any restriction. Gena

    Vitamins

I take an Isotonix multivitamin and mineral supplement. It is easy to take and I think it works real well. You just mix it with a measured amount of Water and take it once a day. I also take a Calcium and mineral at night that is an isotonix also. There is no way it can get stuck because it is a liquid. If any one would like info PM me and I will provide a source. Genea
  21. sfeiner Good to hear about you next fill. I go to the doctor tomorrow and he said at my last visit I would get my first fill then. I hope so, it would be nice to have some restriction if possible. I so want to start loosing I've not gone down any since I saw the nut. two weeks ago. But as it was pointed out by my daughter today (YOU HAVE TO GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND GET TO THE GYM!!!) so it's off to the gym in the AM. Have a great day and a better tomorrow. Genea
  22. I had the surgery on 12/31/07 by Dr. Wright at the NIX Hospital. The staff in the office is very good. They have all of the insurance information at hand and can answer all of your questions. Try one of the seminars at the NIX with the South Texas Surgeons. Both of them are very good and I believe they really care. Genea

    I like this!

Hello Everyone Had my surgery on the 31st of December 07. Say my doctor for my one week followup today. He said to continue to do what I've been doing and follow the outlined plan given be by the nut.. Its good to have a place where we can post about things that we experience during recovery . I know I'm only started on the path but I think I may have found something that will do the job this time. If it can cut my portions and make me think before eating to fast. Also it look like there are enough people on here to kick my butt if I screw up. Hope everyone is having a good day. Genea
  24. Good Luck Wendy I'm in San Antonio and just got my band on the 31st. I'm a little sore but other than that okay. Genea

    Anybody got a Garmin?

I've used a Garmin 2820 for two years, and we don't go anywhere without it. I use it when we go to an address in San Antonio. Very rarely does it make a mistake, and there is a good reason when it does. We took a month long trip to the east coast during October 2006. There many stops and side trips during that time and it never failed to take us were we wanted to go. It saved us a number of times when gas got low or the motel we chose was full or did not meet our expectations. The only problem was when we around tall buildings in some of the larger city's. My LOML has named mine, she calls it the B****H in the box.
