About Me

  • Biography
Had a Gastric Sleeve in July of 2015. After poor weight loss and GERD, reviews to a Bypass in June of 2017. I couldn’t be happier with that decision and really wish I had gone with the Bypass the first time. I recommend the Bypass over Sleeve.

    Need emotional support today please

Shericrazylady, I'm sorry you're having a tough time. After a lifechanging surgery, it's totally normal to feel emotional! This is a lifechanging event that requires a lot of emotional strength and energy! You mention being sad and feeling lonely and asked if the surgery could be making you feel this way. I would ask if you felt sad and lonely prior to surgery. If not, I would be willing to bet that these feelings are coming from a place of worry, anxiety and fear that this surgery has brought on. If you already suffered from depression and loneliness, certainly going through wls could exacerbate your symptoms. Where is your support system? You mention your partner or your mum...are they there for you? You may need to tell them what you need from them if they aren't there for you. They may not know how to beat support you unless you tell them what you need! Don't be afraid to ask for support! It does get better! The beginning is very hard...we go into this with built up expectations and sometimes we've wanted it for so long that we have idealized the surgery itself and are shocked and let down by the reality of the surgery, I.e., the pain, inability to eat/drink well, etc. Reality is that this is tough in the beginning, everything is new and change is scary. Just focus on what led you to where you are now and what the sacrifices you're making will do for you in he end! A happier and healthier you is just around the corner!!

It will get better, I promise!! I'm sorry you're going through a tough time right now. I know it's really difficult to look at the scale and see just a 1 pound loss! But, like others have said, you're still full of fluids and it takes time for those to leave your system. I'm also a therapist and I'm glad that you recognize your negative thought pattern and that your thoughts are irrational. You're definitely castastrophizing right now...if you follow your plan, there's no way that you can't lose the weight! So, what's the worst that could happen? The weight comes off slow? Could you survive that? Of course you could! You can do this and you know what? You ARE doing this! Just give it time to work! Your feelings are completely normal so cut yourself some slack! Keep being self aware and do your best to reframe those negative thoughts! I'm glad you're going to see a therapist...even therapist's need help...maybe even more than a non-therapist [emoji12]

Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

I'm not sure if you're still looking for info as I see you posted about this in March. I can relate to your situation. I had the sleeve almost two years ago. I have PCOS, which didn't present symptoms until after a pregnancy. I was very fit prior to the pregnancy. After pregnancy, I just couldn't lose the weight regardless of my clean meal plan and 5 day per week exercise routine. I actually just started gaining without changing anything! Doctors did blood work and other tests, said it was PCOS and my best hope for losing was wls. I had a consult, was recommended to go with the sleeve. July 15, 2015 I was sleeved. I quickly lost down to 195 but it stalled by month 4!! I was working out, eating correctly, nada! It was very depressing. In June of 2016 I started slowly gaining, again without having changed anything. By January 2017, I was up to 216. I went back to my surgeon who sent me for tests and to the medical weight loss doctor. Tests revealed that I had become Insulin Resistant AND I had developed a Hiatal Hernia. I followed a Keto diet from January-April. I lost 16 pounds the first two weeks putting me back to 200 BUT my weight would not budge. I also had severe reflux during this entire time. So, my surgeon suggested that we fix the hernia and revise to a bypass because that is the only way to resolve the gerd. He also stated that with the malabsorption and my endocrine issues, he hopes I will lose another 40-50 pounds. He had to do a peer to peer with my insurance but got it approved!! I had my revision surgery June 14th and am doing very well...it was easier and less painful than the sleeve!! I'm almost 2 weeks out and down 12 pounds. The weight loss may be slower this time but the scale is moving! I'm praying it continues to move because I can't imagine going through this entire process and not getting to a healthy weight. I wish I had gone with the bypass originally but there's no way we could have known I would be one of the few that the sleeve wouldn't be successful for.

    Newbie 3 days post-op RNY

My surgeon's NP told me that the only way to get rid of the gas is to walk it out. She said that it's not really in your pouch, but just in your abdominal area due to being pumped full of air for the surgery. I'm 3 days post-op and the walking is definitely helping!!
  5. I'm sorry it upset you but it is a standard question. I'm actually a therapist and I promise it is a routine question. Not that it's always the case but sometimes being over weight is a symptom of past abuse, especially sexual. For instance, if, as a child, you're sexually abused, a coping mechanism could possibly be turning to food for escape/comfort. Also, sometimes people subconsciously gain weight to make themselves "less desirable" to their abuser. I hope all goes well for you and again, it's routine so nothing to do with being damaged . Good luck!!

    Julien Bakery Paleo Protein Bars

I tried them and they are TERRIBLE! They took weeks to arrive and then they were all flattened like they'd been crushed. I'm not sure if they normally look like that or not...I tried them and they tasted awful and I've tried many protein bars for comparison. The customer service was also terrible. I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. I emailed them several times with no response. My advice, go on skinnytaste.com and get a recipe to make your own!

Thank you. Do you know if Sentara has them at any location other than Harbour View? I will call someone this week to find out, everything I see online refers to HV and that's pretty far to go as well.I don't know where HV is but I know there's a support group that meets at the center in Norfolk-it's down the street from Sentara Leigh Hospital if that helps!

Smb1966 that's awesome, you're doing great! You should try the support groups at Sentara Weight Loss Center in Norfolk! I agree, way too far and too much traffic to drive to NN!

My doctor didn't seem to think PCOS would cause me to be a slow loser but I'm starting to think it may. As long as I keep dropping, I'm happy! I'm not sure how to exchange info privately on here either but we should definitely keep in touch on here!

You've done great and I'm sure you will reach your goal! I'm okay with losing slow too. I figure it will help with loose skin. I don't go to any of the support groups but know people who go and enjoy them. I used to be really fit, got pregnant and gained about 60 pounds. Even with working out and eating clean, I just couldn't manage to lose the weight. It was so depressing and I feel like I finally gave up on myself over the past year. My OBGYN finally ran tests this past March and diagnosed me with PCOS and said that's why I couldn't lose the weight all these years. So, now that I've reset my system with surgery, it's been easy to follow the diet since I normally eat clean anyway...just getting used to smaller portion sizes! I've been lurking on this site since my doctor suggested WLS and have learned a lot and find it to be a very supportive environment. I'm a little freaked out that I've been stalled this long, with my history of not being able to lose. I'm just continuing to do what I need to do and hoping the stall will break soon!

I had surgery July 15th. Starting weight was 256, surgery weight 248 and current weight is 214. I've been at a stall for 3ish weeks and it's frustrating but I know my weight has to start dropping soon! What about you?

    Greetings from the newly sleeved!

Hi Brenda! I was sleeved on July 15th as well! I too have hit a stall this week. I'm 5'4" and highest weight was 256, 246 day of surgery and as of this morning, I am 234! I was averaging about a pound a day until this week. I guess it's the 3 week stall since tomorrow will make a full 3 weeks since surgery. I'm with you on those stomach sounds and feeling hungry! I'm doing well with fluids and Protein, though I'll admit, I'm relying on Protein shakes to finish off my protein goal if I can't meet it with soft foods. I'm excited for this journey! We will be posting before and after pics before we know it Congrats to you on your surgery and new journey!
