I think there is more worry and doubt in our minds during the qualifying waiting stage than the actual surgery. Are we gonna be approved? Are we gonna prove we can lose weight before surgery? Are we gonna gain weight? I don't care if I get approved? I've always failed at losing and this is no different. What if I don't change after surgery. I enjoy the food too much and don't want to give it up. I'm fooling myself ! !
I couldn't get my mind into the process and it just didn't seem real to me. I continued to eat as I always had. I even gained a few pounds and made excuses as to why when I went to the monthly PCP appointments. I felt guilty constantly thinking I should be trying to get used to the eating habits or I'd be in big trouble later. But at the same time it felt like I was being asked to kill my best friend and I wanted to cherish whatever time was left. So I ate. Not just normally. I went out of my way to re-visit my favorites to get in a farewell, so to speak. And while savoring those delectable dishes, my mind was reinforcing the thought I would never get used to "rabbit" food. During those moments I reveled in the pleasure of food and the thought of some undesirable WLS was the last thing on my mind.
The months passed. I continued going to appointments to keep up appearances of my big deception. And as delays set in and additional tests were required, it just made it more likely that probably nothing was gonna change. I wasn't sure if I cared or not. Either way, why bother to try to adjust to some unnecessary weight loss requirement if the surgery wasn't gonna happen anyway. Hmmm, did I really think that or was I trying to subconsciously sabotage the process. Who knows.
Out of the blue, the "call". Your approved......now pick a surgery date! After hanging up the phone, nervous anticipation sets in. It's real and the surgery doesn't even make me flinch. The life style change afterwards does. Can I really do this? I should have been getting used to this for the last 8 months. Damn, this is gonna be 10 times harder now. Two weeks. Are you kidding me. Pre-op diet tomorrow? Cold turkey? This is just too soon.
Breathe..........think about the skinny you. Think about not dying from a heart attack. Whatever, just get on board, cause your life changes in two weeks.
OK, panic is over. I've been on the pre-op for two weeks and it wasn't so bad. I really can do this. Surgery is tomorrow and I'm anxious to feel the pounds coming off and see me changing.
Wow, that was fast. Surgery is over. Not as bad as I was prepared for. The post-op stages seem game-like. Drink this now. Walk. Now you can eat blended stuff. Not bad. Learn about nutrition. Choose the good stuff for the tiny stomach. Easy pesy.
And I'm losing. I am doing it and really losing. Alot. It is gonna work and it appears I can adjust. And most importantly, life moves on and I adapt and change. Who would've believed it ? The food choices are fine. The nutrition requirements are fine. I'm satisfied and I don't feel I'm missing any foods from my pre-op life. My mind is set on the future and my goals and whatever doubts I had pre-op are distant memories of a past life.

I also am not sure of my date yet. The waiting game is terrible, I feel I have so many questions on the process. I have completed my initial consult with labs, psycholigist and testing, dietician and the MD of the program, as well as the excercise doc. My BMI is over 50 so my insurance waives the 6 month supervised doc appts(BCN of Michigan). They are fast tracking me since I have no other issues besides my weight at this point. Instead of a month in between appointments, I go back in two and a half weeks to meet with the Psychologist, Dietician and MD again and also complete the Body Comp Scan. The doctor is not ordering any other medical screening. I think after this appointment I will meet with the surgeon and have papers submitted to insurance. I am hoping for a Surgery date of sometime at the end of April. Am I correct in the process so far?

I'm not going to lie to you guys, this is HARD WORK! You have your legitimate worries about the surgery, surgery is never fun. But, in my opinion, it is the EASY part. You may have a painful recovery - goes with surgery. But the hardest part is sticking with the program. How many times I have read on this site about people not following their program AFTER the surgery, and wondering why it didn't work!!! You will have stalls, very discouraging stalls. So, start out TODAY with a tape measure!!!! Take today's measurements so you have a base to work from, then when the stalls begin, you can SEE progress! Because your body is going to fight back - fight the starvation it thinks it is going through. At the most, weigh only once a week - choose a day (I prefer Mondays), and weigh wearing the same thing everytime you get on it.
Listen to your head-hunger! Then tell it to SHUT-UP! Follow your plan, and have the Dr. give you an acid reducer - that should help the phantom hunger you will feel. Eat every 3 hours, so the "hunger" is kept at bay - NO GRAZING!!! Use popsicles (sugar-free, of course) for the crunch and chew you need. SIP! Keep it going down! You may even put on a few water-weight pounds for the first few weeks of surgery. Be mentally prepared.
You, more than likely, will have pain from the gas they fill you up with throughout your left shoulder area. And pain around the incision sites and general abdominal area. WALK! After surgery, the more you walk, the faster those gas pains will go away.
Have a hobby to do to get your mind off food (your whole life you have been eating - now you have to change the focus!)Make it an enjoyable one (or more), so you look forward to doing it.
Most of all, get ready for the biggest (probably) change in your life to date! EVERYTHING will change in your physical life. What, when, how you eat. Your clothing sizes and styles. How people see you. How YOU see YOURSELF!
All the best to you, I am praying for you all!

Most programs that I know of use your initial weigh in to determine. a That's just MY experience.

I am in MIchigan also, I have BCN and my BMI was over 50 as well, the MD at Beaumont said that I would be fast tracked due to no other health issues. She said by my next appointment I would need to lose 1-2 pounds. From my understanding they use the first appointment weight to submit to insurance.
I would call the office back to double check

I am lucky I guess. I have been working with my Dr. for losing weight for a long time. I finally said F-IT and went to see the WLS Dr. Mid Sept because I was fed up! I had all my appointments done within two weeks. I had to wait 2 more weeks (about) for my Insurance to say okay. So I only had one month from deciding I wanted this surgery to Approval. I think that is one reason I am a bit freaked out. I had done my 6 months of dieting before I even thought about WLS. they are saying that the surgery is about 3 weeks out.

Hello everyone, I have BCN of MI and I was approved with no issues, I had to do 6 months of supervision. I lost and gained 10 lbs or so. There was no WL requirement but I was sure when I went to checkup close to 6 months that I was down. I have since gained but my date is 3/25/14. I start my pre opp diet this coming Monday 3/10/14. I went through Beaumont of Royal Oak MI. As long as paperwork is turned in with data that says you need the surgery BCN of MI is no problem. I just wanted to share this info
