Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Hi Chanti, you make a very good point. It is about 5 months after surgery for me and I started to smoke occasionally last month. I also agree on your mention of WLS and the ongoing changes and stressors. Your life definitely changes, your image, personality, moods, and social life. Some stages are harder than others, so it can be quite a challenge. There are so many factors that can trigger cross addiction in people and folks should be very careful on the use of marijuana and alcohol. Thanks for sharing.

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
STATUS UPDATE: It has been almost 4 months since surgery and I have been using marijuana since my for about 2 months now and I have to say it has been great. I have lost 54 lbs and I'm feeling great and going. I exercise 3 to 4 times a week and I'm very active. My life has truly changed for the better and guess what - having marijuana did not hinder anything for me. I stick to having healthy Snacks around like apples, bananas, baby carrots if I get the munchies a bit and it works for me. Just thought to share as I started this thread and I have not been on here for a while. Definitely a positive experience!

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
I would imagine that smoking cigarettes would put anyone at a very high risk of complications. I do think that marijuana has different elements compared to tobacco, but I can understand the overall risk of maybe smoking and would think that Doctors know best when they give their recommendations. Thanks for sharing

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Congrats Ms. Babyboo, I have never had no issues using marijuana on and off - I only have used it sparingly. Although I don't smoke cigarettes, I think dealing with letting go of cigarettes is another animal. I kind of feel that way with coffee - I have not had my surgery yet, but just the thought of letting go of coffee is killing me - not to mention the mondo headache that will be with me for 3 days before it finally subsides. Be sure to follow your doctor's advice as it will help in your weight loss success. Thanks for sharing and keep us posted!

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Hi Dawn Turpin, Good to know that it helps. Hopefully the pain and nausea will subside soon for you. I'm still in the pre-op phases of doctor appointments, but I will be tuning in on other experiences. I know for some - they feel nothing at all and are up and about, and then you have some who do experience, pain, gas nausea and other uncomfortable feelings. Every person is different. Thanks for sharing.

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Hi Keysharenee1 Thank you for sharing, I find that this subject is controversial but important to know about as it is very real for many. Can you let us know: Do you find that marijuana works better than other options of pain medication? How about the side effects? Do you also find an increase in hunger with the use of marijuana?

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Thanks for your sharing lauren8486, I have not crossed that bridge yet. My surgery will probably happen sometime late June early July. As for my decision on the use of marijuana, I believe I will wait to adjust to my new sleeve after surgery. I know for sure that it increases my hunger so I will not take any chances of that early on. I can understand your view on the big pharma medicine - many times they have so many side effects and many unknowns, and it can cause more damage than good.

Thanks gravesmisty69 for sharing, I think making the healthy choices even when prompted with hunger will be key. Someone else said they also got munchies, but had some Peanut Butter and celery.

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Thanks Petunia for sharing, I have smoked on off and I find it great for relaxation. Some have shared that it even helps with their nausea, pain and insomnia. Some have also shared that maybe waiting a few weeks or months would be best, what are your thoughts?

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
Hi Trish Olson, Thanks for your feed back, I am not much of a drinker, but I do have wine once in a while. Some of the postings I've read show that some go through many psychological changes and may develop dependencies, such as the over use of alcohol and behavior changes like maybe becoming compulsive shoppers and over spending. I believe it is very critical to make sure that if one has any underlying issues that may cause overeating and a sense of comfort derived from food that lead to binge eating - it is critical pre-surgery to seek that help beforehand find out what is going on that may be causing it, Because of my choice to seek surgery and realizing my bad emotional eating habits, I chose to see a psychologist so that I can sort through my emotions now. I'm finding that some of it is coming from traumatic events experienced in my early child hood, but the great thing is that I am addressing it and facing my demons head on. I truly want to change my life with regard to my weight, but also to have a complete transformation in the areas of mental and spiritual health.

Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery
HI SueHowie Thanks for your response and for sharing your experience. I work in the health industry and Marijuana is being widely used to treat many ailments. It is actually being looked as very promising for those looking to other options rather than the use of opioids. Many patients find that it eases their nausea and does help them sleep. I also think the prompt of hunger does vary depending on the individual, but as you suggested, perhaps the use of it should wait until the bariatric patient has had a firm hold on their new sleeve and adapting to their new way of life. This is great, I am hoping more will continue to share their experiences.

Thanks Charmia, Not sure if everyone necessarily feels hunger after smoking weed, but in this case it seems like you took a chance an conquered, but not tempting yourself sounds like the way to go.
