Hi there, I was pretty nervous before my surgery -- for one thing I'd never been an overnight patient in a hospital before. And I'm older (was 52 when I got my band -- if only I'd done it sooner!). It was so much better than I thought it would be. I took my sense of humor with me -- the glamorous gown and slippers, a final weigh-in, the paperwork and all those people. Very nice medical professionals there for me; I just relaxed and before I knew it I was going up and down the hallway and celebrating. I upped my exercise prior to surgery -- walked a little more each day. And I benefitted from therapy. It was good to have some one to talk over food issues with and help me break down my triggers. This site helped me a lot. I filled my prescription for pain meds but did not need them. Yes, discomfort, but not bad and to me it was all so much better than, say, a dentistry event. I love my band and am glad to have gotten it when I did. Many surgeons don't want to do all that pesky patient follow up. This is key and my advice for any one getting banded: keep all your appointments. They are there for you. I really liked the accountability and patient contact as I learned how to work my band. Also for me it was much better to pay attention to my jeans falling off than that number on the scale. Getting weight loss surgery was very powerful for me as it was about choosing myself first and my healthy future. I am so happy now!

@@DoneItForMe What's really funny is that I was 199.4 when I had that magical moment, so a freakin' grain of rice or glass of Water could have put me back up over 200. Adding an elastic in my hair or putting on socks could have done it, too! I spent mot of my day naked re-weighing myself just to be sure! lol!

Well done you! I know how excited you must be. Can't wait to see that 1 on my scale, even if it reads 199.9 I will still be ecstatic. Keep up the good work.

Well guess who stepped on the scale this morning to 198.4 pounds? Me, fellow WLS friends! I am officially in "ONE-DERLAND!" Huzzah!!!!!!!
I started 8 months ago at 259 lbs. One lap-band and whole lotta good exercise and careful eating later, and I am finally below 200 lbs for the first time in 15 years.
I am fighting back tears at this very moment!
Had to share this success. This is a big one for me. I reached a goal of getting in the 100's before students came back to the College. I'm not much of a goal-setter, but I'm here!
    Woo Woo!
If I can do this, (I am the QUEEN of lack of willpower) ANYONE can do this!!!!

Being almost 6 months post op I still struggle with not drinking while eating. I have managed to limit it to a few sips but it's still difficult. We are having to break habits of a lifetime, It's going to take time but you will get there.

I too am a stomach sleeper and only had to go about a week before I could sleep on my stomach again. I found sleeping on my side with a pillow next to my stomach really helped.
Hope you are sleeping soundly again soon!

DoneItForMe reacted to JamieLogical in Will we have to low carb for ever?
I do eat some carbs. But I shouldn't and I know I shouldn't and I suffer the consequences when I do. For the most part, it's easy for me to avoid carbs in my day-to-day eating, because I have a pretty set routine and in order for me to get in the 100 grams of Protein my nutritionist recommends, I simply don't have ROOM for carbs. That being said, I still emotionally eat on rare occasions (SO MUCH better about it than before). And I also still get exposed to things like cake and ice cream at parties and occasionally partake. I don't want to completely deprive myself for the rest of my life, so when social events present themselves and I eat a few carbs, I just brace myself for the inevitable stall or even slight gain on the scale. I'm not in a race to reach my goal weight. I want to still live a full and happy life. So if having some cake at a birthday party means one or two extra days until I reach my goal, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
But as for daily eating, it's Protein first, which means no real room for carbs.

Congrats on your weight loss!! Sometimes people are uncomfortable giving compliments about weight. They tend to just notice and not say anything. I'm sure after even more loss more things will be said. I totally get why you care - you're busting your butt to get here and want credit. 47 lbs is such amazing progress!! Congrats again. The acknowledgements will come!

My WLS was just over 3 months ago and I have managed to loose 47 lbs, something I am very proud of! Apart from my immediate family, not one single person has commented on the change of my appearance and, to be honest, that was really starting to bother me. Was I so fat that loosing a whopping 47 lbs simply wasn't enough to show a change?
Well someone did finally noticed, the owner of our local chinese restaurant. My husband and I would usually do a chinese take-a-way on saturday nights and since my surgery he has continued this tradition on his own. I think the owner of the restaurant was starting to wonder if we were still together because I was no longer coming in with him and he was constantly making excuses as to why. This past weekend I was the one to go in to pick up his order and was promptly greeted by the owner who's first words to me were "I am so happy to see you, you've lost weight and look fantastic". Music to my ears, the words I have been dying to hear!
I know my appearance has changed, I certainly can see it in they way my clothes no longer fit. Why, as it would seem, do none of my work colleagues or acquaintances seem to notice? More importantly, why do I care?

    Way to go!
I started out at 302. I told only my boss at work about my surgery.
At one point he told me privately that I looked great and I must have lost 20 pounds!
    I smiled and said thanks.
It was 60 but I didn't tell him that.

It took about 40 for me, too -- and I agree, it's a personal dignity thing. I think I put off a vibe that I am embarrassed to be noticed and it's a kindness to not say anything....now, more than a year out (two in November) I like it that my weight loss is not new. The new me is just me.

Congratulations there, skinny! Woo! That's a LOT of weight lost in just 3 short months. Go girl!
You care because you've invested not just money, but a ton of emotional energy into this enormous life change. Caring makes perfect sense. Your body image is not just how you feel, it's also how you perceive others perceive YOU. It's ok to care!
Like you, it took 40 pounds of weight loss for anyone to comment. I was feeling terrific, my clothes were looser, my balloon butt had all but disappeared... but no one said anything at work. It was so puzzling. I was a little disappointed, even though I was feeling great and much, much lighter.
Finally I was three months post-surgical, walking down a hall at the College and 3 of my students were coming my way. They said hi... walked by... then one of them stopped abruptly, turned back and said,"Ok, enough! We've been watching you disappear every week - we don't know what you're doing but you look amazing!" Well, I was just THRILLED! I thanked them, blushing every inch... and they all chimed in and said, "Everyone's noticed and has been talking about it but no one wants to say anything because we didn't want to seem rude..." This was music to MY ears!
They say that people don't want to comment on obvious weight loss because it's a private thing, and a lot of people might take it the wrong way. (Not you or me!)
One woman posted on this forum something along the lines that it takes 3 weeks for you to notice your own changes and 3 months for others to notice.
Way to go! Believe me, people are noticing. They just don't want to say anything because they're too polite!
