It is very possible to get enough Protein from food, but probably not at only 2 months post op. At 6 months post op, I still have the best days intake wise when I add Protein to my drinks or to my yogurt. On food alone, I can barely break 90g unless I eat meat and cheese for every meal.
Eventually people stop taking protein from shakes and supplements all together, which is fine, but at 2 months post op, you're setting the foundations for long term success. I dont have a protein shake everyday, but i make sure protein makes up 60-75% of my meal. If I have a salad, it has meat on it and I eat the protein before I get to the salad part. Which generally is never because I'm full from the meats. On days where I don't feel like eating much, I have a lot of greek yogurt and a Protein Shake or scoop unflavored protein into food.
I agree, you don't need to necessarily DRINK your protein, but you need to be getting it in somehow.

Pardon me, but are you kidding? Yes. Not keeping up with Protein, Water, medications, and Vitamins will absolutely have adverse affects on you. Regardless of weight loss surgery, Vitamin deficiencies and dehydration are very serious complications. If you want to spend your time getting months of infusions to stay alive, and if you want to have that sick, gaunt look to you in order to reach goal, then by all means keep doing it this way.
If you don't like your Protein, do what SleevePerry said and find new ones. Don't like your Vitamins? Find new ones. Can't remember them? Set alarms. Having a hard time with plain Water? Try flavor enhancers. You have to do these things in order to be successful, otherwise you've wasted your time etc with surgery.
Good luck, hopefully you're able to figure these important aspects out so that you dont have any long term problems or complications down the road.

As most have already said, during the beginning or the greater weight loss period, the limited calories will also limit the amount of Protein you're able to get in daily. I choose my foods carefully. Eat Protein first and if there is room, then veggies and stuff. I always use protein supplements like powders, bars and drinks to get in as much as I can. Tried to shoot for 100 or over daily for the first several months. But, supplements add calories too, so you have to watch it.
While you're losing you just want to keep from losing muscle. Building up will come later.
I'm coming up on two years, reached my goal at just over a year and I usually get in over 200 grams of protein a day at around 1600-1800 calories. If I'm working out extra, I try to get extra protein.....close to 300g.
It works too. last March I skied 100,000 vertical feet in 5 days. After twelve years away from the slopes. And I wasn't the least bit tired or sore. It definitely works.

My nutritionist was the same way. She was MUCH more interested in me reaching my body fat percentage goal than my weight goal. And I did in fact reach my body fat percentage goal way before I reached my weight goal. She wanted me to get below 25% body fat which I did. By the time I reached my weight goal, I was down to 22% body fat.

Good question. I am watching this now. Hopefully someone with experience will chime in. I just started at the gym a couple weeks ago. I am regularly getting 100g Protein per day, but once I lose more and want to really add muscle, I bet I will need more than that. I think it also helps to know when to consume it too. I read in a Protein pamphlet that The Vitamin Shoppe put in my last bag, that you want whey Protein: After you wake up in the AM, Before a workout, after a workout. Then you want Casein Protein before you go to bed. Casein takes longer for your body to breakdown, thus your body will not breakdown your own protein while you sleep. At least that was the case this article made. I also found this link helpful to me for many reasons, Protein Intake being one of them.

The mindset here is just wrong. This surgery requires a huge level of commitment to change with clear boundaries on our programs that are lifelong.
You were gung ho enough to commit to surgery, but now are deviating from the program 2 months in on something as simple as Protein and Vitamins? We're not talking about a struggle with pizza when hunger comes back. Just Protein and Vitamins to keep you healthy and help you function. If you want to give on these, what else are you going to give up on next month or 6 months from now?
Take it or don't take it. Got no time for people who can't do what they know they need to.

My surgeon said that we can forget to take our supplements one time, but not on a regular basis. You NEED your protein! It is VITAL! My surgeon does a mal-absorption test at 6 months and then annually. These tests are crucial to see how your body is functioning.

You don't have to drink Proteins shakes. You *do* need to keep your Protein levels up. Same thing with nutrients that you get from Vitamins and supplements. I hope you are at least getting regular bloodwork done to monitor your levels so that any potential deficiency can be caught early. At this point you are playing Russian roulette with your health. Not smart. As to can not meeting your Fluid and Protein goals effect your weight loss? I think you answered that question for yourself when you said you only lose about 2 lbs a month.
Call your medical team, sit down with your nutritionist and come up with a better plan. You are risking your health and life by not following basic rules of bariatric surgery. I actually know someone who had a bypass and didn't follow through. She had surgery 10 years ago. She went down to a size 4. She's now back up to a 16, has no teeth at only 55 years old and has broken her ankle and foot multiple times because her bones are weakened due to not taking her supplements. The last one was this summer and took mths to heal, because of the deficiency she has. Don't let that be you.

There's a big difference between the brief and temporary Hair loss that nearly everyone with WLS experiences and permanent and significant hair loss due to malnutrition. What we're talking about in this thread is the malnutrition kind that happens to people who starve themselves of vital nutrients for prolonged periods of time. That sort of starvation and malnutrition also causes your teeth to fall out, loss of bone density, and all sorts of other potential organ failures, anemia, etc.

The thing about a Vitamin deficiency is by the time you are reading/feeling the results it is too late. Your body is going to first use what it can from your body, the once that runs out, the deficiency shows, but by then the damage is done.
Set times on your phone/computer whatever and take your Vitamins. Get your Protein in. Don't like your Protein Drink, eat your Protein or find a different brand.
These 2 things are not optional.

So I debated posting about this.. but I was in such awe over this, and I think only my fellow female WLS peeps can appreciate this. (And i'm grown, married, blah, blah, blah...).
Hubby and I were having some special time. Off he went to "lady town" (Grey's Anatomy fans should get that). And I realized... I can *see him*. My stomach was not blocking my view of him. For the slightest second it seemed awkward cause, I've just never had that full view before. It was a serious, momentary, mind trip!
    So...NSV qualified, or too risque?

blashlee got a reaction from itstimealready in How did you deal with hair loss?
Kept up with my Vitamins and Protein, used shampoos that are sulfate (foam) free, comb my hair out with a wide toothed comb in the shower with lots of conditioner. I thought about cutting it off or doing braids or a protective style, but decided against that. My hair isn't noticeably thinner until I have it straightened out. It's very thick and curly so while I've lost plenty, it isn't terribly noticable.
It's gonna fall out period. It will grow back. It is frustrating, but stressing about it makes it worse. Taking pills and things that are supposed to make your hair regrow are cool, but all that did for me was give me additional hair in places I didn't want it :-|
    Good luck.

Hey all. This past Sunday 9/6/15 was my 5 month surgiversary!! I have lost 90 lbs since starting my journey back in January. I've gone from a size 16/18 2XL to size 8/M.
To Celebrate my 5 month surgiversary, I ran the Disneyland Half Marathon! I completed 13.1 miles in 3:00:49 and smiled the entire course! It was incredible. I went from someone who once had a full blown meltdown trying to run a half mile exercise to someone who eats miles for Breakfast. I never ever thought I would see this day. So happy to have been granted this second chance at life and I'm glad to report I am using it to the fullest! I'm already registered for another run and contemplating two more.
