SkinnyLaRodgers15 reacted to Keeper in Irving/Dallas - anyone interested in a support group?
I had my surgery in Plano and there are support groups in that area. However, my husband and I share a car and Plano is a little too far for frequent trips.
I am interested in a local group in the Irving/Dallas side of DFW. I have a friend who is a therapist who had bypass done in 2002, and she would love to facilitate a support group. I just had lap-band this past November.
If interested just let me know, either here or by message!
    Cheers.

@@amponder yes me too! I love the cheese or the very first bite off the tip (which is about all I can handle) but it makes hubby mad. (he's also banded so I don't know what his issue is! lol) Sometimes you just need to have that taste even if it's a lick!!

I also didn't tell people about my surgery. Some people can be so judgmental and I didn't want to hear it from them. When people at work asked why I was on restriction I just told them I hurt my back. I healed very quickly and was back to work in 3 days. Congrats on taking control of your life and best of luck to you

SkinnyLaRodgers15 got a reaction from wannaBthinsoon in What are your thoughts on smoking before and after Gastric bypass surgery
I preface this comment by saying I was a pack a day smoker for 15 years before quitting cold turkey in 2012 (because of dental implant surgery and pregnancy. I had my lapband in 2014).
In 2011, I had jury duty in a case where a woman had a breast augmentation where she was claiming it was botched by her surgeon. She was warned by the surgeon to quit smoking because it can drastically effect the healing of the surgical wounds. Well, she admitted that she did not quit smoking prior to the surgery even though she had been warned.
I had the unfortunate luck of seeing the result of consequence of her not quitting. Her incisions were, black, decayed and gaping wounds. I can't see how anyone can heal from those kinds of scars (mentally or physically).
We, the jury, didn't find in her favor of sueing this doctor because she didn't quit after being told to.
I know that this is a completely different surgery, but its surgery and is the consequence worth it?
Quitting for me was completely psychological. I spent a lot of $$ that I didn't have to repair a missing tooth with an implant. I was warned by the dentist that it would fail if I didn't quit. I was also pregnant and did not want to harm my baby. After he was born I had one, while out in a social scene and it was the worst taste/headache I had had in 17 years.
The only advice I can give is love yourself enough to not only start this journey to a healthier you, but to not risk finding out what not quitting smoking before surgery can do to you.
If all else fails maybe wait until you're all healed up. Maybe by then you won't want a cig.
    Hope this helps.

That friend wasn't a friend all this time. That is simply an aquaintance. Real friends will support you big or small. Those kind of friends are hard to come by.

I've read through your post several times, and will offer my thoughts with the disclaimer that it's not my intention to offend anyone. At. All.
While I do believe that some friendships/relationship will change as a result of bariatric surgery, I think the causes can be quite different. I can't say that I've had the experience of a friend suddenly becoming jealous or try to sabotage what I'm trying to do- in fact, they've been some of my biggest cheerleaders. Then again, I'm not a young person anymore, which may come into play as well. My circle of friends and I are comfortably nestled into our 40's, and none of us play the part of the "hot friend". At the risk of stepping on any toes here, it's my thought that if one of my friends suddenly became distant or resentful of me making a decision to live a healthier life, I'd question the friendship itself. If it's a friendship that's really special to me, it would definitely be worth having a heart-to-heart to find out where the insecurities lie. Truth be told, weight loss seems to bring out a lot of insecurities in other people, just as our weight revealed a lot of our own insecurities. Friends who were once close can become distant. Significant others can suddenly feel left behind, wondering if you'll "trade up" once you've lost your weight. I try very hard to remain cognizant that while my decision to have WLS was primarily for health reasons, there may be those who only focus on the physical changes that accompany it. I would hate to see anyone go through relationship changes that are negative- but we're worth being good to ourselves, and removing not only the "toxic" food from our lives, but also the "toxic" people who can't understand what we're going through, or feel threatened by our decision. Just my 2 cents
