Where Are All The East Coasters?

hey Tinky Winky, how did you get NB to cover your surgery in ON? I'm currently fighting with NS to do the same, sine our wait list is 7 years just to the first appointment. :/

Where Are All The East Coasters?

Hey there, I live in Nova Scotia, and I was actually just coming on here to post about my issues with the system here. I was at my doctor this morning in hopes to be referred to the Obesity Network to get my surgery. I was on the wait list in Newfoundland but moved here before I could get it done. My doctor said that the Obesity Network in NS is basically "in name only" now as the surgeon is unable to get any OR time. So I think your sister is not very informed on the actual wait times in NS. I also work in the medical field here, and the last quoted wait time I heard was 10+ years, and I was told that last fall. So, needless to say, I am frustrated because my physician basically told me that she would not advocate for me through MSI in order to get the surgery done in another province. MSI emailed me and did indicate if I have a medical reason to get it done out of province they will cover it... Does anybody in NS have any suggestions on who I may be able to talk to in order to get this going? I am attempting to save money for it to be done in Mexico, but I obviously would rather have it done in Canada. I was sleeved 5 weeks ago in Halifax. Sadly I waited over 10 years to get this wonderful, lifesaving gift Sent from my SM-G903W using the BariatricPal App Hey Amanda, Just wondering if you can give me some information regarding your personal case. I am currently in a battle with MSI, so I'm hoping to gain some insight on how it works in Halifax. When did your first referral go in, when did you hear from the Obesity Network for your consult, and how long between consult to surgery? Do/did you have any co-morbidities? Thanks for any help you can give. And sorry if those question are too personal!

    Surgery in Toronto

@@heather01 I am in NS now, and have to start my journey all over again. I am wondering how you got a surgeon in ON to perform your surgery. Did your family physician refer you, and is MSI covering the cost of it in ON?

Where are all the Canadians ?

The hubby and I made the difficult decision to move from NL, where the wait time is only (up to) 5 years, to NS, where the wait time is 10+ years. The move needs to happen for a variety of reasons, so logically I know it is the right decision, but boy, am I ever heart broken. I'm not sure how MSI works in NS for bariatric surgery (even though I lived in NS almost all my life, I was never considering bariatric surgery while living there.). So, I've heard rumours that you can get the surgery in ON and it would be covered under MSI. I'll have to look into this after I am back in NS, which'll be later this spring. Any suggestions from anybody? :/. I know most of you are in ON and west, but it can't hurt to ask!
  7. I'm just curious to all of you who travelled from Canada to Mexico to get your WLS, did you claim it on your income tax, and roughly how much was returned to you in comparison to what you paid? I'm just trying to look at all aspects of my decision to stay and wait for it to be completed in NL, or bite the bullet financially and go down to Mexico. Any help would be lovely!

Funy that you responded to this! I just did my at home sleep test on Friday night! A step in the right direction, anyway. I find out in a week or two if I actually have sleep apnea.

Very happy for you! Good luck with your surgery!
  10. Im pre-op (for a long time to come), but the reasons why I finally decided to start the process of getting the surgery are... I've been up and down and up and down so many times it is hard to count and I'm just exhausted mentally from never getting any true results! I hit the 300 mark after my second child, I can't bend over and put my shoes on because my stomach is in the way, my feet are constantly swollen and sore, and when I wake up from sleeping it feels like I slept with a ton of bricks on my chest and my back hurts so much I can't move. It's depressing but I'm just glad I'm making the right decision for me.

@@Ivanova8 - Thanks! The reality is, I'm lucky that the province is going to cover the surgery at all, so I'm just thankful for that. I don't mind the wait, even though I'd do it tomorrow if I could! @@cab127 - How are you doing? 5 more days to go until your surgery!

@@khorne - I grew up in NS and only moved to NL about 2 years ago, so I'm glad I started the process up here, versus in NS! @@AlbertaD - That's a really quick turn around time! We have to get a sleep study done before we are triaged, so I am waiting to hear on my appointment for that... I'm not really sure of the general wait time for a sleep study but I'm hoping it isn't too long.

Oh, it's going to be a loooooong wait for me! The waittime for NL is roughly 5 years. That's on the high end. Depending on what they do with my referral and how I am triaged, I may be done sooner. I cannot afford to go to Mexico (even though I would LOVE to), so I am comfortable with the wait time. I knew what I was getting into. hah

I posted to the Canada group, but I thought I would also post to the East Coasters group as well. I just had my referral sent in, so now the waiting begins. I'm in St. John's NL!

Where are all the Canadians ?

I'm new to the forum! I'm a mainlander (Halifax) transplanted in St. John's Newfoundland. My referral was sent in January 2, 2015 (so just this past Friday), but the process is underway! I noticed most people are either in Ontario or in Alberta, and it seems that the weight times are pretty good there! The wait time in NL is upwards of 5 years.. which is disheartening, but at least I'm "in the system" now, as they say!
