@@Chuckster Yes, please show me ALL of that information, I will wait for it....You seem to have plenty of time on your hands. I was far from being nasty to you, I said congratulation didn't I? Which is more than you've said to anyone here. I said GOOD FOR YOU! As in GOOD for YOU. What's your point? You lost weight AND? You felt the need to come on here to a website focused on WLS and share this because?? Do you think we are all stupid "Gluttons" as you like to say. You don't think we know it's possible to lose weight w/o surgery?Of course it's possible, I'd say 99% of us have all done it, that's not the issue. Go ahead share your story but Including the words "absurd" and "almost criminal" is a crock of shit. The reason why I "just can't eat only 2000 calories " is because I don't effing have too! Yep that's right I'm over 3x7 and I made MY choice that I'm 100% happy about so I have NO intentions of answering to YOU or anyone else for that matter about my life choices. I don't have time to be entertained by you any longer Chuckie so bye bye now! Good Luck sweetheart Xoxoxo....Now that was condescending. Coming at me with some BS you've lost your ever loving mind. Glad for you Chuckster. You beat the odds. Only 8% of those who try for long term weight loss achieve it with diet, exercise, support alone. Part of the problem is the set point our bodies keep trying to get back to - see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e26JKMpSNSo. 80% of those who have WLS achieve the same results as you did. So I played the odds. Working very well for me and many others on the site.
But like many have hinted at, the WLS doesn't do it alone, got to work the program, it's just a dang handy tool that works for many. I didn't climb up Longs Peak in CO because of it. I didn't do my first 5K because of it. But it was a dang handy tool to get me to the point where I could make these things happen.

(Yeah, what she (Scarletwitch19 ) said !!! ) Chuckster, you may be a scientist, and score high on the black and white facts scale , but you lack tact, diplomacy, and some social skills. To come on a WLS forum that offers support and encouragement to those who have or might have WLS surgery and spout off about how wrong we are , and if we would just diet and exercise we wouldn't need WLS , shows how little you really do know. (Really ? Diet and exercise and I'll lose weight ? Golly gee whiz ! I DIDN'T know that ! I guess good ol' Chuckster from N.C. has FINALLY come up with the answers we've been waiting for !! Thanks for clearing that up for us on the WLS forum !! )

    Ah....
    I see.
So looking over your posts, it's my opinion that your tone is almost of superiority over those of us who have chosen the WLS route. I do hope I am wrong about that.
The words and phrases you used could be construed as quite offensive if I was the delicate type. Examples? Hedonistic, vulgar, self medicated, glutton, the thought that "paying seems absurd", "self induced caloric poisoning". Now I assume that all this is negative self talk and you don't at all mean to imply that these words apply to all obese (or formally obese) people.
I'm very happy that you found YOUR solution, but I will remind you that this is a WLS support forum. We are not here to downplay or denigrate anyone's choices regarding how they choose to loose their excess weight.
I will not take the time to tell you about my experiences with traditional weight loss and my success with WLS as I am fairly certain my words would only bore you. Your obvious disdain for the medical profession is apparent but I owe my life to my doctors, not only in my weight loss efforts but through other medical procedures that had nothing to do with my former obesity.
My hope for you is that your weight loss efforts will continue to be successful and your health will continue to be excellent. I know mine will be despite the fact that I chose a route that you clearly find objectionable.

Good for you! Any weight loss achievement is to be applauded, no matter the method and no one way is better than any other as long as the end result of better health and fitness is achieved.
I've got to ask, @@Chuckster . You just recently joined this forum (a weight loss surgery support forum), you lost a whole lot of weight non surgically, and both posts you've made since joining have been about losing weight non-surgically. What's your agenda in being here?

Mine is...Sales Associates. Mostly in higher end retail stores. When I was heavier...and needed help...no one was ever around. Now that I am much thinner...I have sales people (men and woman) falling all over me. I can't take 5 steps without a sales person asking me..."is there anything I can help you with." I have lost and gained weight many times...and this is something I have noticed each time I lose weight. It makes me sad for my heavier self. And anyone else that is discriminated against like this. My income level does not change....with my weight.

This may sound funny, but I get so uncomfortable with all the church peeps raving about how great I look and how proud they are of me. I'm not one who likes being the center of attention.
And then one person said this: "I was telling my husband that I would just do the quick and easy thing and have the surgery." I wanted to slap her. I said "if you think weight loss surgery is either quick or easy, you are not a good candidate for it." And I left it there.
Otherwise, there's really nothing I don't like about this!! Oh, I hate shopping for new clothes. Okay, that's a lie. I love it. I love how great I look in my jeans today. And I love that while all the other parts of my have gotten smaller, my boobs have stayed the same!!!

My mom has invited me over for dinner, then ordered pizza. Wtf. It's as if she's trying to rub it in my face. I also get frustrated when my bf wants to go out to eat, which is totally fine, but wants to go to places that have nothing I can eat. Or decides we shouldn't cook, he wants takeout. Come on. Get take out or go to grease ball restaurants with your friends. I think it's a little insensitive to do that in front of me, especially because I'm only 2 months out. It's going to be tough forever, but eventually we need to get used to being around food we can't eat or social events that aren't ideal for us. But I think it's reasonable to expect the first few months my family and close friends try to think about me when making plans. I feel selfish saying this, but this year is about me and I need to do everything I can to get the results I want. Sometimes it would be nice for a little more support

It is unfortunate that you did not have the results you wanted from your surgery, whatever those desired results were. Many of us want health and energy and for our knees to no longer ache. When I was 24 (and still a size 6) all I wanted was a husband and my bachelor's degree. So I know that, had I been a candidate by virtue of my BMI, I would not have been nearly in the mindset that would have led to success with bariatric surgery. I think it's unfortunate that you were able to go do it in 2 weeks -- obviously the surgeon did not require a psych evaluation.
I also find it amusing that the link you posted was to a diet page. With the headline "diets don't work." And then it goes down to give a diet. If you desire to believe the rubbish on that page, then it's okay. But if what you believed were not true, wouldn't you want to know?

Nonfat plain Greek yogurt and some sugar free Torani syrups to flavor it.
Don't need to get too much of any one thing because you will only be having a couple tablespoons at a time of anything.
I stocked up on sweet things, and then post-op found that I wanted more savory things. So I had a bunch of sugar free home made custard (which was really good except I just didn't want anything sweet) and chocolate pudding that never got eaten!

Loved this thread....really lit up the boards!
Lots of good info, incorrect info, personal stories , some judgement.....
Heartfelt admissions, newbies and veterans....something for everyone!
    Really interesting.
It made me, for just a moment, retreat to a 20 something year old mind....
Frankly, I don't know if I truly had the wisdom, long-term thinking and tenacity my 51 year old body had when I had WLS .
That is a TRULY interesting subject to me.
Seems like some of us more , ahem ,mature people here have a much different perspective and success than a 20 something jumping in 2 weeks to surgery..
Not defending any point of view ...
Just youthfulness has its innocence and naivitivity....

Permanent? Well duh! I don't think anyone who had a sleeve went into it not knowing they were having anywhere from 75% to 85% of their stomach removed. It's not like it can be glued back on.
You asked "You want to live with only 15-20% of your stomach and eat 4-6 ounces of food at a time? Forever?" Well yes, actually I do. That's what I signed up for. But I can eat more than 6 oz of food at a time. I can eat 6 oz of Protein and a serving of vegetables like a salad or some zucchini or green Beans.
I don't need to eat a whole large pizza and a bag of potato chips like I used to. I don't need to eat ice cream and Cookies and candy bars. I feel so much better eating steak and salad.
And I'm not in the least bit deprived. Yesterday for lunch I had a broiled lobster tail with a small salad.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience but that doesn't mean the rest of us feel that way. And it doesn't mean someone going into the surgery will feel the same way. Actually I'd rather have most of my stomach missing than be dead which is where I was headed. And a lot of other people have that same situation.
I only wish I had done this in my 20s. I missed a lot of my life being morbidly obese.

Jesus, it looks like Charles Dickens is posting on BariatricPal nowadays. People are writing books.
Don't get me wrong, I like reading. Just not when it is a bunch of worthless pulp. So for newcomers to this thread, let me summarize it for you:
    Original Poster:
I had gastric surgery long before I was mature enough for it.
I didn't do what I was supposed to do post surgery.
I never lost as much as I wanted.
If I can find one person to agree with me, then it's not really my fault.
    Everyone Else:
You weren't ready for the surgery.
You didn't do what you should have post surgery.
You would have if you followed directions.
Most of us don't agree with you.
Go back to basics, find some friends who can give you the support you must need.

Yeah re the loss of lean body mass--
At 271 I was almost 70% fat and 30% lean body mass. That's 189lbs of fat and 81lbs lean body mass.
Over 18 months out I am now 135 and 18% body fat which is 24lbs fat and 110lbs lean body mass. So I have actually GAINED muscle by keeping my Protein up, running and yoga.
And I get the people surprised I haven't always been slim when they meet me.

And unfortunately, even people who have had it can be woefully uneducated. And that is the real travesty here.
