I love the quotes. My son is suffering with depression and alcohol abuse and has recently decided to seek help. I sent him these quotes as they are relevant to so many life decisions. Thank you for sharing.

Stay strong. Nerves are absolutely normal for any surgery. Just know that you will be so much better once you've made it through surgery and the post-op period.

mae7365 got a reaction from Healthy_life2 in New to all this...and with a few questions
I was also fortunate that I had been under my primary care's supervision for weight loss the six months before I had the surgery consult. So I to skipped ahead to nutrition/psych eval and EGD. I have Aetna, and Aetna makes their approval decision upon the weight and BMI at the time of consult and submission for approval. Therefore I didn't have to show any additional weight loss between my consult and day of surgery. I was only required to eat a high Protein diet for one week before my surgery. So I really had no specific diet that I had to follow between consult and the week before surgery. I was a low BMI patient (36.1) so I did have to be careful to not loose weight that would have put me under the 35 BMI cutoff for Aetna.
As far as lap band or sleeve.........ask your doctor how many lap bands he's doing each week vs. VSGs? When my doctor told me he was removing more lap band than placing them, that made up my mind immediately.

Ditto. I wouldn't say that this new life style is easy, it requires daily maintenance and planning. It is mostly forgiving, but doesn't tolerate a lot of "bad" food choices before you know you're off track. I'm so very happy with the new, healthier me. I'm only 4 months out and I hope and pray that the choices I'm making now will stay with me for the rest of my life. Lots of walks, gym time with my husband or daughter, logging my food intake are all part of the new me.

Now that I have lost all my excess weight, I have developed a new lifestyle....I still enjoy food now as much as ever...along with drink, parties, etc etc....
...I can do all things, just nothing in excess...the WLS, specifically lap band for me, prohibits me and takes away the urge to be a glutton....
I don't need to eat to the point of being stuffed anymore, and frankly I have no desire to...take it or leave it.
I don't worry about calories anymore, Diet is a four letter word I will never have to do again....the diabetes, cholesterol, high BP, etc, etc are all gone!
I have no fear of ever being fat again....
I am enjoying life, and all it has to offer, more now than I have in a long time. (I'm 63 years old) All the result of WLS...something I could not accomplish on my own.
Bottom line....over a 24hr period, I eat less, WAY less, ( a 1/10?) than I used to....what I do eat I try to make the most of nutritionally...and I stay as active as possible, a real health and fitness addict.......a new Lifestyle that feels great!
Over the past few years, I have found this to be true for me, having been on cruises, vacations to foreign countries, business travel, weddings, parties, picnics, holiday family get togethers....I have no fear and enjoy myself at them all!
It's a new way of living.....opposite from the way I was that made me Obese and unhealthy to death's doorstep
There is life after weight loss!!!
And you know what? I am not ashamed that it was EASY! Why should I not want to admit it?? (learning and breaking old habits was the hard part) I don't care what other people may think....When it comes to this, it's all about me.

A wonderful young man who was well loved in our community died in an accident recently. One of the speakers at his memorial said that one of the last things he said was, "life is for living, not surviving." That really struck me. But I realized while thinking about it that the statement means something different to me today than it would have before I began my Quest to recover my health. I still think it means that I should enjoy my pleasures whenever I can, but my definition of pleasure has changed. I seek out non-food pleasures much more than I used to, and really am grateful for them. I love my life even more now, even though I have become very careful when it comes to food.< /p>

So, showering had been increasingly difficult in the months before surgery. I would have to sit down for most of it, and I felt sweaty and out of breath at the end. I am 12 days post surgery and was able to shower comfortably and not be either sweaty or out of breath this morning!!! First day back at work, I am anticipating other NSVs like that in the course of my work day as well!

I was 57 when I had WLS in November 2014. My primary care provider told me that WLS is more successful in older adults since we've lived with being overweight and know the hardships of yo yo dieting, most have comorbidities as a result of being overweight and we're more motivated to improve our health.

Hello group, I just wanted to let you all know that on 3/3/15 I had gastric bypass and I could not be happier or feel better! Since Tuesday, I have lost total of 18 lbs. With a grand total weight loss(including the weight I loss pre-op)of 49lbs. After few days, the results are incredible.
I know everyone is not the same, but moments after waking from surgery I was up waking about. Though I had incision pains, I felt like a million bulks. Though at the time, it could have been the anesthesia talking . But really, I was walking about on the hospital floor feeling great. After being released, I've taken short walks, trying to be careful not to over exert myself, because yesterday I did and it was not fun. The only real uncomfortable part of the surgery for me has been the gas; that's no joke. But most of that has moved and I feel much better.
I am so grateful that God has given me the second opportunity on life and health. For all of those pre-op. I know there are worries, I had my own and still have some, but nothing beats the feeling of knowing that this part of your life is changing for the better. I'm so excited for what the months and the years have ahead. This is the first time in my adult life I have looked positively towards the future with anticipated hope and expectation.

mae7365 got a reaction from Dream thin in Do you count carbs?
I track everything on MyFitnessPal and I focus on getting 60+ grams of Protein. Right after surgery, I tried to keep my carb intake very low (<50), but the dietitian told me I need at least 125-150 grams of carbs for proper brain function etc. I have my 1000 calorie MyFitnessPal set at 50% carbs (125 grams), 25% Protein (63 grams) and 25% fat (28 grams).

My surgeon says her older patients often do much better than the younger ones who are much more likely to resist properly following both her pre op and post op eating requirements, etc. Older people in her experience follow her orders and often do much better. They are more likely motivated by health concerns rather than appearance.
As I read the forums here I often remember what she said. When people say things like "I'm 3 weeks out and sick of purées, can I eat (fill in the blank) " I often wonder how old they are lol.
Don't know whether it's true but my own experience seems to confirm it.

Goodwill retail stores ($5.99 per pair of jeans in north Florida) and I pulled out my sewing machine. I just keep taking in the back seam of my pants. Sometimes twice in a week. I have also invested in a couple pair of yoga pants. They are stretchy and don't fall down......plus they look pretty good 50 lbs thinner than when I had surgery in November 2014. I wear them with long sweaters. And I've bought a few pair in Walmart for less than $10. They will work for casual, probably not too well if you work.
