Question about protein drinks
I agree with cowgirl on this. The premier Protein ready made shakes have so many positives: 1. They are ready made, no fuss, no muss! 2. They tastes delicious, especially their chocolate 3. Only 1 gram of sugars 30 grams of protein and 160 calories I honestly have not found one that tastes better and provides that level of nutrition for us gastric bypass patients. It was recommended by my bariatric center of excellence after I struggled with the powders.

The date is set for arms and abs!
Wow, how exciting! I am just starting to research more about plastics. I am 25lbs from goal and of course want to maintain that for a while before moving forward but I have huge bat wings, lots of extra skin at tummy, thighs and of course my butt and boobs are literally gone. I have to figure out how I will pay for this surgery so I want to get some idea of how it will all work. My number 1 priority is my arms, they keep me from so many clothing choices. Good luck to you! I hope all goes well and you love your results!

Excited to Get This Show On the Road
Congratulations on taking steps to get healthy! You will likely have no problem qualifying. Usually most insurance companies will approve a person with a BMI over 40 as long as you follow their requirements. Jumping through all the hoops is a pain but in the end you learn a lot along the way. I am glad to see you are excited! I know I felt the same way going in, the morning of surgery felt like Christmas morning for me. I was very ill and knew this was literally going to save my life in the long term for me. There are things you can do now that will set you up for success post surgery: - begin removing as much sugar from your diet -if you smoke, quit now, you will be required to and it gets hard changing everything all at once -if you drink carbonated beverages now, stop. You won't be able to ever again post surgery. -if you drink caffeine, try to ween yourself off if it. You will need to for a period of time. If you can live without it, even better. Caffeine dehydrates you and post surgery it is difficult to get hydrated properly -if you drink alcohol, you will need to stop that as well. It hampers your weight loss and your body changes post surgery to where you can become drunk very quickly. My surgeon had me sign a contract stating I would not drink for the first year. Not hard for me I only drank a handful of times within a year. -start drinking lots of calorie free liquids. 64 oz. per day - start walking everyday for 30 minutes. - remove distractions while eating so you can pay attention to how your tummy is getting full. Along with this eat slowly over the span of 20 minutes to no longer than 30 minutes. This will become important post surgery. -this one is harder than you think to do but nothing to drink 30 minutes before or after a meal. Once you have surgery this becomes much easier unless you eat a lot of spicy food. These don't all have to to be accomplished at once but these are a lot of the changes required. For me, I had 9 months to work at them so by the time I got to surgery day, life was a lot easier to adapt to! best of luck to you and feel free to reach out with questions!

Oh the "Advice"
All I can say is UGH! This is the danger especially when it comes to your family members. I love my father n law to death. He is a very sweet person normally but he is in his late 80's and sick as heck with type 2 diabetes. He is close to losing his limbs due to poor diet and lack of adherence to the fact that he is a diabetic. He was always very quick to point out when some woman in particular was heavier. Well, he never said it directly to me and he loves me very much but when he would say something rude of course I knew he likely felt the same about me. Now, I am down over 120lbs and to him I look thin. I swear every time I see him he first compliments me on how thin I look and then follows it by asking if I would like a piece of cherry pie, chocolate chip Cookies or ice cream. All 3 some of my favorite treats. He knows that I chose not to eat like that any longer and he tells me he is sorry that I cannot and when I eat in front of him and eat my 1/2 cup of food he says, that's a shame that you cannot eat what you love. I remind him that I love what I eat and especially love the fact that I get full fast and stay full longer. He tells me constantly that I should eat more. I want to say, love you Dad but remember all those times you would see an obese person and call them a cow or a fat ass? Well, I know what really is in your head.

Weight loss slowing down Weeks 11-13?
@@CharlotteKat I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is normal to slow down after that first initial big loss. It also depends on how much you have to lose. If I lose 10lbs per month now I am lucky. I slowed down after the first 3 months but the important thing is I have still been losing. I was right around 80lbs lost at that point. I am now down 120lbs. Also a stall is no weight lost. 2 lbs per week is excellent! Think about before surgery, when were you last losing 2lbs per week? I know this is not what you want to hear but it is reality. You are doing fantastic!
-
Stalls
You also have to remember that there are different opinions on what a stall is. For me a stall is simple, it is no weight lost at all for a period of two weeks or more. In some cases you can even see a small bit of gain but it usually comes back off immediately. There will be many usually along ones journey. It is your body simply resetting itself. I tell myself that every time I experience one. I think I am currently at the tail end of one now. The scale has not moved in the last two weeks until this morning. I am hoping it continues. I seem to stall about every 10lbs as I near my goal. Congratulations on getting your surgery done and your weight loss so far!

Why can't I lose weight without surgery?
@@TXhappyday, As everyone else has said everything you are feeling is completely normal. If you were not questioning it and running full steam ahead I would be shocked. The biggest thing to remember that most people do not understand is that obesity is a disease. Logically you tell yourself if I eat less and exercise I will lose weight. The reality is you have a metabolic disease that pushes against everything you do to try to lose weight. I have lost hundreds of pounds over the years only to gain it all back and then some. After I got older (I am 52) I noticed that I could not even lose the weight to begin with no matter how hard I tried. Then the weight really started piling on fast for me. I did not eat a lot, I promise. What I ate was killing me! Literally. You are going to be so happy once you have a tool to help you be successful. Trust me when I say this is not easy either. There will be bumps in the road but you will get through them. By the way, I had bypass. I have thrown up exactly twice in 11.5 months. Both times it was from eating more than my little pouch liked. You learn the rules and then believe it or not you follow them. I wish you the very best of luck with your surgery. Trust that you are making the right choice to get healthy!

Understanding daily intake when closing in on goal
@@Babbs Thanks for the suggestion. I may give the whole grain idea a try. If I toast the bread I might have more success with it. Bread is usually hard on my pouch. Also I usually can tolerate a bite or two of rice so maybe that will help. I have been at this calorie count now for about 6 months so I was tempted to bump it up and see if it makes a difference. I feel like my body is definitely complacent.

Loose Skin
It definitely has a lot to do with age and how long you have carried that weight and how much weight you carried. I am 52 going through menopause and have carried an extra 100lbs and more since I was 26 years old. No matter how much exercise I cannot exercise away the mudslide I now have after nearly 120lb weight loss. I no longer have boobs or a butt, just loose skin. Everything has sort of fallen downward hence the name (mudslide). I will be seeking plastics for my arms, boobs, tummy, legs and even my butt. The only reason I would focus on my butt is it is so bony that my tailbone sticks out and it hurts like hell. At the end of the day, I could not be happier with my result. I am much more healthier and happier person. In clothes I look fantastic, I can deal with the lose skin issue. Good luck to you!

Understanding daily intake when closing in on goal
Good morning everyone! I need a bit of advice/guidance. I am closing in on my 1 year surgiversay at the end of September. I have done extremely well the past 11 months losing just short of 120lbs. I have struggled in the last few months with exercise as I have been on restriction doe to a major spine surgery. Even without that restriction I would be struggling with exercise other than walking. I try to walk outside or on my treadmill at a brisk pace for 30 minutes about 5 times per week. That bit of walking right now is the majority of my exercise. I am still not allowed to do housework but I do cook and do the dishes. I am not allowed to bend, twist, reach....you get the picture. Anyway, in the last 3 months I have stalled once for 28 days and now I am 2 weeks stalled. The good news is I am not gaining but to be literally stuck for that long has been frustrating. I track my food and beverage(I only drink water) every day. I usually will consume between 1100 and 1200 calories a day. I always get between 70 and 90 grams of Protein per day. I am pretty good about sticking to my food plan from day to day but it just does not seem to be working for me as it once did. I am wondering if I am literally not eating enough calories at this stage or if I should be backing off. My meals consist of the following: Breakfast - Premier Protein shake lunch - 1/2 cup cottage cheese with 3 strawberries or a salad with chicken on it snack - either pistachios or beef jerkey or an apple with Peanut Butter dinner - chicken, fish, beef or pork with a vegetable or garden salad Snack - either pistachios, beef jerkey or a pudding I really appreciate any insight you might be able to provide. I would really like to break this stall soon! Thanks! Deb

Protein smoothie
@@meSparkle83 Honestly I steer clear of all/most powdered Proteins. I just cannot stand that gritty Protein taste. I really stick with Premier Protein ready made shakes for that reason.
-
Protein
Premier Protein seems to be the best tasting and easiest as they are ready made. The can be purchased at Sam's or costco in 18 packs. You can sometimes find them in 4 packs at Walgreens. The nice part about ready made shakes is you are not dealing with the grit that comes along with the majority of powdered solutions. I will say that my second favorite would be the syntax nectars that can be mixed with Water or milk but you will need a blender or blender cup with the little ball in it?

Which weight loss surgery would be best for me?
Likely you will need to go the an RNY gastric bypass but it really does depend on your current health situation. Most centers of excellence are getting further and further away from the lapband. There are more complications that require a revision to bypass with that surgery. If you suffer from reflux at all, bypass is the way to go. It is the gold standard for weight loss surgery and is know for achieving more weight loss overall. If you don't suffer from reflux/Gerd then the sleeve might be the right solution for you however I would definitely ask questions about how much weight you would likely lose with the sleeve. I would suggest taking a class (they are free) at your local bariatric center of excellence. Best of luck to you!

What is your "scale" strategy?
I have always weighed daily and have done very well even through stalls. My longest stall was 28 days. As I am now within 25lbs of my goal I have to say I am ready to smash my pretty glass scale as it has become very frustrating. I knew these days would come but now that I am here it sucks. I have been stalled again now for 11 days and decided this morning not to weigh daily any longer mostly because I am reacting stupidly. Meaning I am adjusting my eating drastically from one day to the next and it is not making any difference anyway. So the moral of the story is, I need to stay the hell off my scale and just focus on sticking to my eating plan. Otherwise my pretty scales will be in teeny tiny glass pieces. LOL!

I HATE exercising! What Should I do?!
I have been simply walking as I have been on restriction for nearly 4 months. I am not a fan of exercise myself but I do love the way I feel after.

What’s in Your Healthy Lunch?
Almost everyday I have 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese with 3 strawberries sliced in it. On days where I have a good leftover Protein from dinner the night before I will have that protein in a garden salad.

Low carb chicken parmesean
I made an outstanding home made low carb chicken parmesean tonight for dinner. My husband loved it and my pouch is very happy now! I used almond flour/meal instead of flour and bread crumbs . Here is the recipe: 1 large chicken breast (I love smart chicken brand) - boneless, skinless 1 egg 1/4 c milk or half and half 1cup almond meal 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesean cheese - all I had was Pecorino Romano and it was excellent! Salt Pepper Olive oil Fresh mozerella - chopped Marinara sauce - I cook this by sautéing onions and fresh mushrooms and then adding my favorite jarred marinara sauce I preheated the oven to 375. I sliced the chicken breast to make a thinner filet using a sharp knife. This made two large chicken filets. Set up a breading station. Place 1/4 cup almond meal in one dish, 1 egg plus 1/4 cup milk whisked with a touch salt and pepper. In the last dish add 1 cup of almond meal plus the parmesean cheese. Mix well. Place a shallow layer of olive oil in your frying pan and turn heat to med/high. Place chicken breast first in plain almond flour, then dip both sides in egg mixture, then roll in almond flour/parm mixture until well coated. Repeat with 2nd slice of chicken. When oil is hot but not smoking add both chicken breasts to pan and brown. You will finish this dish in the oven so you are just looking to brown your crust. Remove chicken from pan and place in baking dish. Spoon marinara sauce around the sides and a little on the top of each breast but don't cover them completely. Some of the crust should be peeking out. Sprinkle with fresh mozerella and cover with foil. Place in 375 oven for 8 minutes. Remove foil and let bake another 7 to 10 minutes to brown cheese. Do not over bake your chicken. Adjust the times accordingly. Mine was very juicy, tender and delicious! Yum! Eat up! I was able to eat about 1/3 of one slice with some lovely green Beans with bacon and onion as my side. Very nice Italian dinner.

Pre-pre-surgery - interested in adding protein shakes
I know that premier Protein at costco runs 24.99 for an 18 pack and every so often they run a sale for $5 off each case with a limit of 2. Their recent sale ended August 30th. I always stock up when they are on sale.

Confused
Yup, she is not wrong. Most companies require a BMI over 40 or a BMI over 35 with at least 2 comorbitities. I am sad to say that if you stay on this route you will likely develop more comorbitities over time but by then you could be so much closer to better health. Are you certain you don't have sleep apnea? It might be worth getting the study done. So many people have it and don't even know they have it. If you did, it would qualify as your second comorbitity. Just a thought.

Vomiting stomach acid
Have you had your bypass already? If so, you should not be vomiting stomach acid as they cut away the part of your stomach that generates it. This is one of the reasons one who has RNY doesn't get acid reflux. I would call your doctor but it likely is some other issue you are having. It is not because you are not eating. It is possible that you have developed an ulcer. Call your doctor a sap.

Does anyone feel pressured by surgeon to have the bypass (instead of sleeve)
@@Mayastone I am glad to hear you made a decision that you are comfortable with. I wanted to reach out again to simply say, don't worry so much about the dumping issue. First, not everyone gets it. I don't. Not at all. I actually wish I did because it would definitely help keep me away from stuff I should not eat. Many people on this site don't dump. If you follow the food plan from the very beginning you will do great. Second, I have read posts from sleevers who dump. There is a version of it even for them. Third, if you are a dumper, you will learn what to stay away from and will adapt. You will lose the weight you need to with bypass and will do great. As I think I said in my previous post, I planned to do the sleeve as well and was devastated when RNY was recommended for me. I am so very glad I had the bypass done and the only thing I regret is not doing it 15 years ago. The best of luck to you and feel free to reach out with any questions you might have.

Pre-pre-surgery - interested in adding protein shakes
I think it is actually the detox from all the sugars that cause all the taste changes. For many even the smell of overly sweet things can turn your stomach. The smell and taste of some of those Protein drinks especially certain ones with certain sweeteners. Ugh! I had to change what I used almost immediately and fell in love with Premier Protein ready made shakes. 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar, 160 calories. They taste as close to a milkshake as a Protein shake can. chocolate is the best flavor in my opinion but vanilla and strawberry aren't bad either. They can be purchased at Sam's or costco in 18 quantity packs. I have also found them at some Walgreens stores in 4 pack quantity,

Help! 5 months post RNY and back to Stage 2 and 3
It definitely sounds like it could be lactose intolerance. In the very beginning I had this issue and had to switch to lactose free dairy products and had to change to a new Protein drink as well. Now my case was fairly mild but it was miserable and I was not getting my protein in. I switched to lactaid brand cottage cheese because I did very well with it. Also I started using Premier Protein ready made shakes and still use them 11 months later. You might try also re fried Beans. Puréed chicken, scrambled eggs.
