jd88047 got a reaction from Alex Brecher in Did You Have Complications After Weight Loss Surgery?
I was the worst patient. The gals having this surgery I have respect for you. I had a rash develop from blood settling in my stomach. I had issues getting my fluids in. I had increased pain in my neck, back, and shoulder. My feet developed a intense burning itch from the diabetes that was cured by the operation. I now suffer from a deep depression as I don't feel I'm doing well. But the scale does not lie, nor does my old clothes I found in the back of the closet. I believe stats say 3 out of 4 people have complications. But most don't require a return stay at the hospital. Your body is going to loose a lot of weight very quickly and things like staples coming loose will concern you, but happen and nothing to worry about. Incision pain was another concern. Also my urine stream got very weak. I was worried my kidneys were failing. Test don't lie, I am fine. Last the foxes my stomach but not my head. I still battle with food even though I can not eat. Last I rolled my ankle walking as part of my exercise routine. Bit all this was worth it, I have a food problem. I was Jill ng myself with food. My family also makes it hard when trying to stay away from food triggers. But my family have all lost a heathy amount of weight too. The hardest thing I do at 6 months out is finding things with taste. I no longer look at volume but tasty Protein with lil or no carbs. When I stray I go back to a food journal to monitor myself. I am not going to gain this weight back and that will always be a struggle for me.

The next few weeks I would concentrate on what you were told to do. Stay hydrated. Exercise if you can. I first saw inprovements in my face and stomach. I am to understand when you dont loose pounds you are loosing inches.

Just an FYI...I read that the body can not absorb large amount of Protein at 1 time 20-30 grams max per serving.
3 meals and 3 Snacks a day, try starting with Protein at each serving for all 6 n it helps chip away at the protein and keeps your metabolism up to burn fat.
Besides Protein Powder-some food choices are
    Scramble egg whites
    Greek yogurt
chicken or tuna salad ( home made- low fat)
    Fat free cheese
    Skim Milk
    Ground Beef or Turkey
Home made Soups with shredded meat

What kind of surgery did you have? Are you eating 8 ozs per day or in one sitting? What did your nutritionist say?
My surgery was in 6 weeks ago. I started puree foods a couple of weeks ago. I am eating between 1.5 to 2.5 ozs per meal. I should be eating three meals but I am not.

jd88047 reacted to winning_by_losing in When does the back and feet pain go away?
My back pain has only started to ease up in the last couple of weeks.
I've had problems for many years, but had been told numerous times that losing weight would resolve it. After 8 months and losing over 200 lbs, I'm finally starting to believe some of it.
It definitely hasn't gone away and I don't imagine that happening any time soon, but it isn't near as debilitating as it used to be and seems much more bearable now, so I'm just hoping things continually get better as time goes by.

Ya I've had back problems before surgery and my Dr. Told me if I loose weight, my back would feel better. Not..... it still hurts even after loosing 130 lbs.

I'm only a month out and have had some mild back pain. My plantar fasciitis flared up before my surgery and is still giving me problems but I'm trying to fight through it and keep up with my exercise.
I have 2 good friends who are 3 and 4 years out from surgery and both of them have said their back hurt pretty much the entire first year. Your body has to readjust its posture as you lose weight and it can cause aches and pains you may not have had before. That's probably why your doctor isn't worried; however, if the pain is so bad you can't sleep I would ask your doctor what your options are to relieve the pain. It might be worth seeing a physical therapist for some stretches or exercises that might help.

I am so very sorry you had such a horrible expirience. I agree with the above poster that you definitely need to be seen by a doctor about your stomach. If anything, it will make you feel better about know what is going on. Worst case scenario, go to the ER at the hospital the procedure was performed in. They will be able to get a hold of someone to help you.
In this process information is everything and I agree your doctor has dropped the ball royally. I encourage you to look past this experience and focus on the future. As you continue to heal and are able to do more and more, you will begin to discover your new body. You will find out how amazing it is and what you are cabaple of. On those days when you feel like your not getting anywhere and things seem bleak, make a list of all the things you can do now that you couldn't before. I remember crying the first time I could do something as simple as walking down a flight of stairs like a normal person. Now I run up and down them. Keep an eye on how far you've come and all the amazing things you are doing instead of focusing on the past.
I agree you made the right decision and I am so excited for the journey of rediscovering your body that you are about to go on. It has been the defining moment of my life so far and it will be for you as well. If you have any other questions or if there is anything I can do for you please let me know. My links are below. I hope this helps.

When I started this post. I did need to vent a bit as I was scared at first. Now I have done what I can, its is up to god. I dont know if the person was trying to help or be mean. I know I had a bad few days till I realized everything was great. Not sure about the doctors or nurses attitudes, but feel good about getting the surgeons email so I could make sure he knows some things are not happening. There is grumblings from others as I found out. So if one doesnt speak up, nothing will get fixed.
There is some very intelligent folk here. I never considered the operation a mistake and am glad to have such good company. I actually had fun today as each day gets better.

Find some people you like, friend them, follow their posts! I'm so excited you are losing weight and can't wait to read your FULL story one day.

Cant agree enough algea. I have other health care professionals and others who are local and I have a feeling I am not the only one this is happening too. My understanding after asking questions is without a Nurse Coordinator, nothing gets done. Im not even sure the Dr knows I am having difficultys. Now if the email is a good one great.
This is turning out to be a wonderful exeperience and very positive on my life. I have moved past the issues with the clinic and took charge. I am responsible for me. I use what works in my life and get rid of the garbage. While the Dr and his clinic could be helping they choose not to.
If someone makes a promise and then they brake that promise, that is a lie to me. I have no time for liars in my life. I posted this here to let folks know I am not happy. I dont have many post as I am a new patient and just founf the forum. As long as I get negative emails from folks on the forum. I will just not use the forum. You know who you are, good luck with life.
Thank you too all who has made positive comments and I want to say thank you for listening.

One thing I learned through the military and Tricare is the "Hurry up and wait" mentality.
Here's a skill I've learned to walk through when I can't get answers I feel like I need. First, think about this as a business call. I know it's hard to keep your cool when you don't feel well or when you have concerns of being ill-treated. But I also know that most of the people who answer the phones aren't going to go out of their way if they feel attacked. Remember, you need answers, not enemies!
So I'd start off by writing out a script with your basic concerns that you need addressed. I do this so I don't get off topic or forget to ask something important.
Then, when you get someone (anyone) on the phone, read them the script. Some times I've found a helpful person who can answer one question but not the rest.
Then ask them if there is anyone they can refer you to that is above them or in another department who might be able to help you with your concerns. I personally take notes on who I talk to, the date and time, and anything they said that's relevant.
My last bit of advice might seem cliche, but it's proved true in my life over and over again. Right now there are people in your life who are watching how you deal with this situation and it will shape them and influence them. This can either be a "poor me" story or a great, inspiring story of overcoming obstacles, especially unfair and complex obstacles. But just remember, people are watching how you act and react!
    I'm praying for you!

I think it is essential that you get a doctor to manage your care-- may be your primary doctor. If the post surgery is not managed correctly - there could be life threatening consequences.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. This seems like an issue with your specific surgeon. If you can't get into contact with their office call your primary care doctor ASAP and see if they can refer you to another surgeon and take over your care in the mean time.
I didn't realize until after my surgery that I had go take ulcer meds until after. What they prescribed me was like $300. I declined to buy them and instead went and got cheap otc omeprazol. My surgeon said that was fine as long as I was taking something. You obviously know you need to take something, so go get it. It's cheap and the pills are tiny.

Sounds like you had a horrible experience and I feel for you. First, there are complications from the procedure going in and my doctor not over went over each complication in as much detail as I wanted. I emailed him question about His particular statistics related to the procedure. It you weren't fully aware of the possible short and long term consequences than you need assess your doctor not the procedure. Second, as a person with chronic diseases (GERD high BP, disabetes, thyroid, arthiritis) I quickly recognized that the surgery subsituted 1 chronic disorder (malnoutrition) for obesity and all the obesity related disorders. I said this to my doctor before the surgery, he looke surprise. But agreed. I have been off diabetes, my bp is running normal and the doctor is talking about decreasing my thyroid medication. Personally I think it is a fair exchange. Finally, this surgery is not about losing weight - if it is a bout losing it quickly AND keeping it off. I have lost hundreds of pounds over the years this surgery provides away to make the lost permanent. Clearly, if you can llose weight quickly and keep it off this surgery is not for you. IN fact, my insurance requires a history of yo-yo weight losss before they will cover.
Sounds you have had an experience that may not been characterized by you being fully informed - that is a problem of the surgeon and his team. not the surgery. Have you confronted your surgeon about your feelings? you should.
