Roux-En-Y or Lap Band
With RNY you might lose that 100 pounds faster but if you don't change your lifestyle you will more than likely gain it back. That means eating healthy and EXCERCISE. I know several people that gained 80% of their weight back. My cousin lost all her weight and has kept it off but she didn't lose her weight until she became very ill and had several surgeries due to malnutrition. Sure, she looks great but she is not healthy. By the way, she never excercised and still doesn't. I know it is a very difficult choice and I am just sharing my thoughts that helped me make my decision. Good luck!

Have date after 11 months of frustration!!
I would tell them but not until after the surgery and give them time to adjust to the idea. It will be very difficult to hide and you might end up breaking the rules and that is not what you want to do. You won't enjoy yourself if your hiding this secret. I don't know how close you are to your family but I know I could never get away with hiding it. In the end whatever you decide I know it will work out. Just remember that this is your life and you have to do what is right for you. Good luck!

banding over Thanksgiving week
I also went to Southwest Texas State but only for a year. I was there in 1986. I love San Marcos, it is beautiful.

Losing weight is the last thing on my mind!
It is so hard not to weigh yourself everyday. I know I am losing weight on my pre-op diet and had been weighing everyday but today I forgot because I was mad at one of the neighbor kids. I guess that is a good thing. Tomorrow's loss should be good as I am finally getting in all my Water. I keep telling myself that the goal of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver and the weight loss is just a bonus but that is hard to do when my main goal in this process is to lose weight.

banding over Thanksgiving week
Go to Monthly Lap-Band support groups and join the November 07 group. It is great to here those already banded discuss their journey and for those of us not yet banded to discuss our feelings ask questions. Congrats on your decision.

On pre-op liquid diet...I'M STARRRVVVINGGG...I cheated :-/ ...I need support!!
My pre-op diet is low-carb. It isn't bad. I agree that if someone can't handle one day of liquids then they are going to have a very hard time post-op. None of the pre or post op diets are easy. If they were easy we wouldn't be having surgery to lose weight we would have stuck to the "easy" diet years ago. I don't think any of this process is easy on anyone. I believe that some have a better mind set than others and understand that the band doesn't do the work. Some think that the getting the band cures us of overeating the foods we love. I believe 95% of those banded still want the food we ate before and the true test is changing our lifestyle and eating healthier with the band as our support system to stop us from overeating on those healthier foods. In the end it is all up to us. Sorry to ramble. I think that was more of a pep talk for me reminding me of the journey ahead.

Only one week left in my pre-band life!
I am really getting excited. I talked to the Doc's office today and they have received my money so I am all set. I won't find out what time the surgery is scheduled until Monday. I hope it isn't too early because my mother and sister will have to get up so early and I hate being a burden on anyone. I'm pretty sure I've lost a few pounds on my low-carb pre-op diet but I haven't hopped on the scale yet. The way I look at it is the pre-op diet is to shrink my liver and the weight loss is secondary.

Doctors in Sugarland Texas
I live in Sugar Land and will be banded by Dr. Spivak on 11/20. He is in the medical center but I believe he is the best lap band surgeon in Houston and that is more important to me than driving across town. Believe me, I hate the drive but it is worth it if you have a good surgeon.

No one in Nov?
I am so sorry you got so sick. That is awful. Just remember that in the end it will all be worth it. I hope you are feeling better very very soon. Jill

Question for those banded more than a week
I've read that some people use benadryl cream around the incision to help with itching.

On pre-op liquid diet...I'M STARRRVVVINGGG...I cheated :-/ ...I need support!!
My pre-op diet is a low carb diet. Liquid only would be tough but you can do it. Try and focus on the end result and on shrinking your liver for surgery. Good luck!

Banded since July 25,2007 & Losing My HAIR
Turtle, I'm so sorry you are losing your hair. That seems fairly common from what I've seen here. I am very concerned about that as I have very thin, fine hair now and if I lose any after surgery it will be very noticeable. However, I would rather be thin and healthy in a wig than fat and unhealthy with my own hair. I know it will grow back but I am still nervous about it.

Nov. 9 - THE BIG DAY
I'm so sorry the pain is so bad. Do you have something stronger than Tylenol to take for the pain? If you do, take it. I hope the pain is better very soon.

Roux-En-Y or Lap Band
Many people gain their weight back after RNY and the lap band. The good thing about the band is that it can be adjusted to help you lose the weight again if you stick to the band rules. I work with a girl that had RNY and she lost 80 pounds. She has gained back 50 pounds because she did not learn to eat properly after surgery. Now she can eat all the foods she couldn't eat at the beginning. Both require hard work and determination to lose the weight and keep it off. Good luck with your decision.

My email to my family.
Great e-mail Longhorn! Did you send this to your parents, brothers and sisters, in-laws, aunts, uncles and cousins? I've only told my mom, sister, brother, cousin (had her stomach stapled years ago), 2 friends and my mom told my aunt. I'm sure my cousin told her parents and siblings which is ok. I really don't want everyone to know but I also don't want to hide it. I don't want them asking me about it everytime I see them.
