I have UHC and I didn't have anything like a 6 month diet or counseling thru optum. I hope my approval goes as smoothly as the process getting to this point. Hoping for a mid May surgery.

I have bcbs federal. I'm 25 with a bmi of 43 and was approved in one week. I was worried also because I have no co-morbities and am fairly healthy but they approved me. I just scheduled my surgery and am excited/nervous. Good Luck and keep us posted!!!

Well as of today, I am halfway to my goal. This is including my weight loss from before the surgery which was 20 or so pounds. I am also nearing the 100's, so that is exciting as well!
I was at a 2 week or so stall and have picked back up losing weight again...

Just got "the call" that my surgery is on schedule for tomorrow at 7:30. I have to be at the hospital at 6 am. I thought I would be really nervous, but I am so at peace. Been on liquid only diet since yesterday, with just 1 dose of MOM. That was easier than my endoscopy!!
Thank you my friends, for all the support during this pre-op period. I am looking forward to many new things - like, not being so tired and out of breath all the time, being able to buy clothes because I like them and not just because they fit. On a more humorous side, I am excited to be able to look down and see my feet, be able to get in and out of the tub without a wave hitting the floor, and lastly, be able to wipe my butt with no problem.
I will try to never take my health and my future weight loss for granted ever again!! See you guys on the flip side in post surgery!!!

Not everyone has the same evaluation. Mine was a multiple choice test of about 200-300 questions. Not difficult, but I made sure I gave pretty positive answers and also had to watch out for some tricky double-negative type questions. Then I had about a half hour meeting with the psych person where she mainly asked about my past diet/eating history and what I wanted to get out of weight loss surgery. Mostly they want to make sure you understand the process and are capable of making an informed decision and that your expectations are realistic. She did ask if I'd had depression and I was honest about past history but said I was in a really good place now. I think that is also important. Be honest but don't emphasize past problems a whole lot - I've read on here people who got sent to counseling for a few months because they talked a bit too much about past eating disorders or depression.

Thanks everybody! It was a great day. My husband and kids and I went for a late lunch in Memphis to Celebrate at a new tapas place I've been wanting to try. Tapas places are such a treat now because I get to feel like I'm eating a normal amount of food. Here's a picture taken as we were leaving.

Congrats, It is amazing to finally start feeling healthy after so many years of feeling lost and horrible. I started out at 300 and am down to 214, and I am looking to get to 175ish, I thought when I started this process that it was going to take forever to feel this way, but 5-1/2 short months later I am feeling it and I feel good!!! I don't have much further to go which makes me happy and excited to start maintaining myself, and I plan to stick to it as I grow old, cause I don't ever want to go back!!!

I find that the closer I get to my surgery date, the less attractive I find myself. What's going on here I always prided myself as a BBW(Big Beautiful Woman), but now I see a "fat" slob. I'm seeing flaws that I have never seen before. I'm wondering if this is how the world have been seeing me for years. I dress nicely I get my hair and nails done; however now I'm just not feeling sexy or beautiful. I keep fantasizing about who I might be or what I will look like after surgery. Can anyone else identify with this? I know it sounds crazy trust me I'm a counselor but I still can't help but to critically observe myself. I know surgery is not the answer but I would like to wear the clothes in my closet and they fit. Is that too much to ask for? Just getting this off my chest!

mrsaizsha_101 reacted to taterbum in 4 Months down - My thoughts
Well, four months down It's funny, it seems like it was just last week I had it done....and at the same time I can’t believe it’s only been 4 months.
Your life gets into a routine, you do x,y,z go to bed, get up, do it again. It's not to the point where my life is normal to me yet...but it's beyond the new car smell now.
Everyone around me comments on my weight loss. How good I look, how fast it's coming off. While I see it, I still see all the work still needed. I look in the mirror and see progress yes, but also sigh at what’s looking back at me. It's funny what four months can do.....
In four months I have lost 100 lbs. I got on the table at 375lbs May 12th, I just weighed in 275lbs today...four months 100lbs off. I weigh myself once a week. Same scale at the Dr. office on my way home every Wednesday. I watch what I eat in terms of Protein, fat, and sugars. I keep track of calories but in a side note more than a target. I figured out about midway through this thing for me protein is king. I was so caught up in calories in - calories out I missed my protein targets. The Doc took me to task on my 1 month follow-up and increased my protein to 70grams a day. 70 grams! I was having a tuff time getting in 40g!
To this day I still have a tuff time with the 70g a day mark. I try, oh Lord do I try....but damn it's hard. I have a tuff time eating meat now. I can eat meat (chix, pork, beef, lamb) as long as I have something with it. Something like a little rice, or with some veggies. By itself though...it's iffy that it will stay down. That coupled with I cant seem to even smell Protein powder now without getting nauseous....makes protein intake a chore. I work at it though That and I stay consistent with my exercise. I'm not killing myself at the gym, but I religiously get in 4 miles a day walk/jog. It takes me all day to do it, but it gets done. A bit before work, a bit during work, and the last bit after. With that, 5lbs a week loss steady for the last 2 months plus.
I've got another app with my Dr. coming up in week or so. The only complaint I have thus far is muscle pulls. I'm thinking a low potassium count, but we'll see. The muscle pulls suck though. Twice back pulls and a weekly deal with my right calf pull....sigh. Other than that little nugget, no complaints. It's not easy, not easy at all. All the things you hear about is true to some degree. Your family and friends eat like its their last meal every night, you take 2 or 3 bites of something heavenly and get full, head-hunger sucks, things you used to love to eat no longer work for you, you find out you used to eat meals at mach 5 and now you’re in the slow lane, and other fun stuff...
Just some random thoughts at four months....

mrsaizsha_101 reacted to BeagleLover in Bariatric appointment? ?
I am speaking in general, because your requirements might be different, driven by your insurance. First determine whether they cover bariatric surgery. There usually are BMI requirements. Most follow NIH guidelines: > 40 BMI for a certain amount of time; > 35 BMI with 1 or 2 co-morbidities. Sometimes the insurance company requires that the surgery be done in a Bariatric Center of Excellence, sometimes not. Your insurance may have a certain number of nutritionist appointments you need to complete, usually 3 or 6, one month apart. If you miss one, you may have to start over. The hospital usually has a nutritionist they are associated with that has the schedule set up for these monthly meetings. Your hospital program may or may not have a bariatric coordinator that keeps track of the requirements met and those that still have to be completed.
Sounds great that you are proactive in getting things scheduled!
