Surgery soon - approval time

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am coming up on the submission of my paperwork to insurance (BCBS) - so in essence I've jumped through every hoop they've thrown at me, three month dietary counseling, psych clearance, pulmonary and cardio clearance, EGD, the whole nine - the only thing left for me to do is go to the informational class about surgery, pre- and post-op stuff, and then they will submit the same day, Sept. 24. I've been looking on the forums to try to get an answer to how long approval can take when I came across a young lady who said her approval took six months because she has little to no health problems and she is young. I have been worried about this - my BMI just barely clears the 40 point mark, I have no co-morbid conditions and I am (relatively) young at 36. Other than that, most people with BCBS said their approvals took, on average, about a week. Did anyone have the same situation as me going in and if so, how long did your approval take? I have been concerned that they will deny my claim because I feel they will think that I should be able to do it on my own since I barely meet the requirements and I'm not sick.

I have Anthem BCBS and it only took a day for my approval once they got all the right paperwork submitted to them. I'm older (mid 50s) and have a couple of comorbidities, but I don't think that mattered as much as them having all the info correct and that I met all their requirements before things were submitted.

If your doctor submitted documentation that you have tried traditional dieting programs and were not successful in keeping the weight off, then your age really shouldn't matter.

Did they ask you for 8 years of your past weight?

Did they ask you for 8 years of your past weight?

They didn't ask me my past weight at all. My PCP just had to put in a letter that I had tried other weight loss programs and was not able to maintain a healthy weight. My surgeon's practice gave him a sample letter as a guide and he used it almost exactly, just changing my name and a couple of minor details. Guess they have that part down to a science. :-) I do think it a lot of it is about the wording and knowing what specific wording your particular insurance company is looking for to meet their requirements.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
