Judgment, shame, and blame targeted towards people affected by obesity are neither appropriate nor helpful. Delivered as a public service announcement, this video seeks to address this problem head-on. It is stated by twenty-two representatives of people affected by obesity and is intended to be both educational and empowering.
As a nurse practitioner and independent podcaster of the Weight Loss Surgery Podcast, Reeger Cortell regularly bears witness to the pain caused by judgment, shame, and blame targeted towards people affected by obesity. “I Have a Disease; It’s Called Obesity” was written in their defense, as an unapologetic statement of facts. To bring the script to life, Reeger invited the individuals featured in the film. Despite the fact that they are all at different points in treating their obesity, they continue to share in common the scars of harsh criticism and the desire to help make a positive difference moving forward.

This video took first place in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery video contest titled, "It Starts Now."

Throat Punch, seriously if someone said that today it would be so. Then I would buy them all the Protein shakes, since they could no longer swallow and ask them how much they like them the next few weeks.
I am cranky, I am sick of food and worrying about food. I feel like I need a damn noodle or a Frito chip. Riding my stationary bike is hurting my butt and I need to go buy new underwear, which I would rather eat glass but it probably has carbs.
I'm doing great and I don't regret my decision but today would not be the day to say such things.

I agree - her results looked very good. I just wish we could have seen how her thighs turned out (unclothed). They looked great in clothing!
I also want to add that it's the first time that I've seen any of them tell the patient to lose more weight before the skin surgery. And she DID it. That was awesome and I think went a long way towards the results she got.

Well the lady from tonight's skin tight actually looked good after hers was done. Probably the best I've seen on there so far.

Yes I'm definitely still reading on everything. I just wanted to know how it went for people who have had either procedure. Thank you so much for your responses.

I finally have a consult set up for next Wednesday with a plastic surgeon. I'm going in for a lift with implants and possible Tummy Tuck. I need all the information I can get before I go. I want DD implants. I've always had big boobs and I want those puppies back! Soooo if you've had them done tell me how it went. How painful was it? Are you happy with the results? Did you go under the muscle or on top? Cost? Anything I should ask the surgeon? Did you have a combo like what I'm considering? I've read through some post but it's easier to just make my own. Thank you for any knowledge you could share. I'm excited and beyond ready!

glad to hear - and I'm right there with you sister!

I'm only a couple months post-op and getting to the surgeons table was a bitch but I have not regretted my surgery a single day. Not only is my body changing rapidly, but so is my mindset. This surgery has been the catalyst for a whole slew of major changes in my lifestyle, that have nothing to do with food. Knowing been in a few months I'll be physically much more able and comfortable, has me planning for year of travel and adventure, that would have been impossible. It really is a sacrifice, but for me it's completely worth it. I have no regrets.

IMO you have the right to possibly be the center of attention for a while
if you are in group with her, see how she reacts to compliments about you
if she gets all sad, downplay the situation
you can casually change the subject, drift elsewhere
change the topic
when you are alone, see how she wants to talk with you about WLS
about what happened with her regain
maybe she would welcome advice one on one
its possible she is very interested in your situation, how you ate etc
let her take the lead
since the "new" me has "arrived" i have become "a little"vain! too
ie will pass a mirror at Kohl's and stare for a bit

My thoughts on June:
She was obviously not psychological ready for surgery although I see Dr. Now's concern about her not living another month and wanting to treat her physical symptoms right away.
I am glad he made the point of how it is possible for obese people to be malnourished.
I just don't see how they couldn't have her seeing a therapist that first month she was in the hospital. I just can't imagine how she would have ever passed a psych clearance without at least starting some therapy pre-op.
I also think this is a great example of how both partners need extensive nutrition counseling and training.
I am coming to the conclusion that spouses, partners, children, and other live-in "helpers" need a formal program to prep for surgery, including their own psych clearance. There seem to be so many codependent, and abusive relationships (from both directions) on this show. As well as just a lot of ignorance.
Did anybody else think that June's girlfriend was a teenage boy in the shower scene?
If June had been in the hospital 20 times, why has they not even brought up surgery? It seems that Dr. Now could have been brought in to consult. If her health concerns were anything other than obesity I am sure they would have considered all options.
June's legs reminded me a lot of mine in the shape, fat distribution, and lymphedema. I saw a lot of myself in her mobility challenges. It was very sobering and made me very grateful for all the progress I have had so far.
If my son was killed in the way her son was, therapy should have been one of the first tools I reached for. It breaks my heart how culturally and socially there are so many barriers to people seeking and accepting help. At the very least she could have benefitted from some serious pastoral counseling. Our mental health system is so broken in this country.

Right?? He reminded me a bit of Vin Diesel! His nipples, however, were still too close together. Those surgeons need some help with placement.

I always had awful skin, just awful. A combination of crappy diet and hormones.
My skin is so much better now. It didn't happen over night - may have even had a few out breaks post-op. But I look at my skin now and it's so much better.
I drink lots of Water, and eat right. IMO that goes a long way towards healthy skin. I still get a pesky zit from time to time, but it comes and goes so fast. Not like the never ending outbreaks I used to deal with.

Two weeks off work was ok for a TT and panni for me (I had my arms done too). Could I have used more time off work, sure! But it was manageable.
The girl that was at 195lbs...I didn't really understand getting the surgery at that point. If she loses the rest of the weight, which she said she wants to do (you know the "right way"????) shell have just as much loose skin and she'll need more skin surgery. I'm not sure what it got her, unless she wasn't being honest about where she wants to end up weight wise.
None of us like looking "deflated" as we are losing our weight. But we have our goal in mind. It just seemed like she wanted to skip to the end.
There's no freaking way I'd go through all of this if I had another 50lbs to lose!! And why don't the dr's question it? I know...it's a tv show ????
And yah...both of the guys that had the man-boob jobs I was thinking the same thing. The doc needs a class on anatomy. They don't go there !!
For any female wondering, on a breast lift for women...it stays attached. ???? (not that I've had one darn it, but I've seen the operation and researched it)
