Could I suggest that food not expired be donated to local food pantries or churches. I teach lots of kids who don't have food at home and this would help their families and you out!

i threw out stuff that i know long term we wouldn't likely eat- mostly processed boxed stuff that i wouldn't be able to have for quite a while and maybe wouldn't choose to have again anyways.
i have 2 kids and a hubs who are all really healthy and kids are both underweight so i had to keep their stuff around! i try to feed them all well and so there is always fruit, raw veg, Jerky, nuts, etc around for snacking.
honestly, post op, even though the stuff LOOKS good or in my head, seems tasty, NONE of the food in my house is tempting or an issue for me at all. i have ZERO appetite 11 days out and just focused on the few things that i can have right now.
it's weird because post op i have found much enjoyment in cooking for my family. i have put together all sorts of good healthy meals for them, including cooking meats, pastas, Soups, salads, etc. doesn't seem to be an issue for me either, and in fact doing all this cooking seems to be helping me re-form my relationship with food. i respect food much more now as something necessary for fuel.

Hi Newbies, I'm scheduled for "the Sleeve," July 3rd. I am so ready for this! I've been on liquids for a month now and had trouble at first now I'm just trying to regulate my digestion with Probiotics. Anyone else have suggestions about this? My Dr. office doesn't seem concerned about insurance issues, that's a little unnerving, yikes. I've lost 53 lbs since January although I started on my own and met with Dr. in February. I have not missed food until today and if I thought I wasn't having this Surgery on Thursday I think I would be in epic sabotage mode right now. Sooo Excited about my journey. I've found some inexpensive ways to flavor up my Protein and still keep my calories at about 1000 a day. Yoga is helping with my center and balance, love the wii fit. I would love to hear how everyone is doing post surgery? I intend to journal the process, hopefully to share. Good luck everyone, it's an exciting and stressful journey but the end results will be worth it!

I totally understand.. People are not educated and therefore quick to judge. I'm one month post op and when people say I've lost weight or you look good I just say thanks... It's not worth an argument as you said. We did the research and made personal decisions for ourselves.. Good luck with your surgery!

My initial consult date is scheduled for 6/30. And while I know that my surgery is not going to be until fall, I have my mind set firmly, now. I was browsing the Tj Maxx tonight. Not looking for anything. Typically, I love just running through the women's plus racks. I flipped through them and didn't see anything I liked well enough to buy to wear until fall. Next I went over to the PJs section. I didn't see anything in plus sizes. Only XL and smaller. And, you know what. I didn't feel bad. I found myself thinking, " if they are still here this fall/winter, they'll be cheaper when they fit". lol I know it's the littlest things.
I've also found myself not talking to anyone about it anymore. Well, except for one friend who is having the sleeve done in July. Clearly, there are no judgements or anything from her. When I told a couple of friends that I was considering looking into the surgery to see if my insurance covers it etc, I got warnings from my one plus sized friend and then shock from my size 10 friend. I havent spoken to them about it since. Now, I'm just on an inspired high. I can't wait to get through the initial consult and start my 3 month weight management program.

The surgery will work. The extent to which it works & the long term effectiveness is up to you. You just have to stick to the plan. It does work. Also if you are willing to do the tough emotional work to get to the root causes behind your unhealthy eating habits, I think you will be even that much more successful

Your doctor should give you a plan. The first month is a little rough. You do have to sip, sip, sip to get your water in. Definitely work on getting your Protein in too. But don't progress faster than you are suppose to. Don't eat things you know aren't healthy. Always eat your protein first & stop eating when you feel full. Don't "graze" all day, cause you will definitely eat too much. My doctor also suggests no bread, rice, Pasta or potatoes for a year. I'm 4 months out & it's easier to get off track now. I could eat anything, but everything is not a good idea (even in small amounts).
If you weren't given a plan, let me know. I will share mine with you. It progressed slowly over 6 weeks. It's definitely doable.
    Best of luck!

I did that too, leaving in place foods I know my husband likes, but only the ones that are not temptations for me! It was liberating, and felt like another good step closer at the time. I began the pre-op diet the next day, with a clean conscience and a very clean kitchen and pantry.
The great thing is, as hard as it is to throw away ice cream and treats and wonderful breads and pastas, pretty soon you will be doing the same purging in your closet. Only then (for me) I was getting rid of large dark shapeless outfits that are not purely because they fit and did not clean, but very little of it was actually attractive. Now I get to shop my old clothes out of boxes, and find that three fourths of that wardrobe no longer fits my optimistic attitude and approach to closing--so much about is going to Goodwill too.
Good job cleaning your pantry and setting yourself up for success!!

I have 2 nine year old growing boys who have access to occasional Snacks such as that at all times. I find it brings a healthier view on such foods that it's there if they want it and not a reward. Anyway, it's ok because post-op all those foods make me instantly gag at the thought! I even thought that I would try a bite of one of their Little Debbie snacks and couldn't even hold it in my mouth for more than a few seconds before spitting it out in disgust. Since sweets were always my weakness it's strange after 43 years, but I welcome it and the results!

Don't worry about your surgeon getting upset - you should be upset if he doesn't have 24/7 oncall provisions (in this line of medicine, somebody knowledgeable on staff should always be available to answer questions/concerns from new post-op patients.) They should be able to recognize common symptoms and provide some guidance (whether that be a change in medication or diet, waiting until the next available Dr. appointment, or go now to the ER.)
These are new experiences for all of us as we go through this process, particularly the early post-op phase, and we can't be expected to recognize all of the symptoms of potential problems - that's what the doc and his staff are for, so tough Cookies if they get upset at you making a decision for your medical care when they were not available to provide the guidance they should be providing.
With that vent done, if you can't get a hold of your surgeon's staff, I would go to the ER because the symptoms you describe may be for something quite serious that you don't want to wait on - possibly a stricture, twist or kink in your sleeve that isn't allowing things to pass (even Water not going through is a concern, unless it was Water immediately following some solid food that is slow to go througn.) But if even water isn't going through, you are in danger of getting dehydrated which can be an hospital trip unto itself.
It may be something quite benign, but without proper medical guidance (and we aren't doctors here....) you really can't tell on your own. When my wife was going through this, "not right" feelings the first weekend after surgery, she called the doc's number and talked to his RN program director (who was the on-call person that day) who listened and told her that she was just constipated - yes, it can feel different than it did before - but try this and that and call again on Monday if things don't improve. She would have had no hesitation to direct us to the ER if symptoms dictated (and we were 100 miles away from them,) and there was no question that the surgeon would have been on the phone to the ER docs if such action was necessary.
Care for yourself first, and then worry about others' feelings.
    Good luck on this,

Bitter yellow liquid sounds like stomach bile. Have you had something to eat yet today?
Are you getting any kind of reflux or burning feeling?
Are you able to keep fluids down?
Sorry more questions for you then answers. If you can't hold anything down and are vomiting bile, you really need to contact your surgeon. If it will be open tomorrow and it does not get worse, you could probably wait till tomorrow, but remember, we are not doctors and cant tell you anything for sure.

Hey guys! Sleeved 2/19. Down 79lbs since preop. Just work the plan. Be committed! You can't just eat whatever you want in small amounts & be successful. I have no doubt that I will lose over 100lbs. As the weight comes off you will feel so much better!! It is a HUGE commitment though. Just prepare yourself for that. It has not been as hard as I anticipated. Best of luck to you!!

I've never liked my pic taken and I still don't but I admit I mind it less now. A friend sent me these today so I thought I'd share. I also don't like to talk about my success, in any area of my life. Some how I feel bad for those that are not as fortunate as me even though I know I am where I'm am because of sound choices and hard work. Anyway, here's a before and after.
I'm four months out on the 23rd and have lost a total of 90lbs with no complications. I still get most of my Protein from whey but I can eat anything without issues as long as I chew chew chew. The other day I forgot that and I paid for it. Good luck everyone.

That is a question I asked my dr before surgery and she does all the easier ones first...luckily the day of my surgery there were only 3 booked, first person was gastric bypass, then I was 2nd band to sleeve and her 3rd patient was also band to sleeve. I didnt find out what order I would be until the day of surgery but I knew since i was having revision i would not be first

I really wanted to be the first patient in the morning with my doctor .....but I ended up being the third patient because he had to do two complicated lap band revisions in front of me .....and when he came in the room to see me before I went into the operating room he said to me "oh good now my easy patient" - I do think the more complex patients are handled first.
