I had the sleeve surgery in June. I was 187 lbs, 5.4" tall, BMI about 31.
I travelled to Jordan to have the op as no doctor would do it in Europe. The best decision of my life. within 6 months I was down to my current weight of about 141 lbs. I'm healthy and happy. I'm a UK size 8, US 4.
I'll try to put a couple of pictures up. :-)
Just because we did not get to a desperate stage of weight, it doesn't mean that we have no right to do whatever we can to make ourselves healthy and happy. Trying all my life and being 46, I knew I couldn't just loose it and keep it off.
Go for it, you will not regret it...

I had a BMI of 35 the day of surgery, with high BP, high cholesterol, borderline diabetic and uncontrolled asthma. I also got told by everyone but my doctors that I wasn't "big enough" to need surgery. I'd been overweight to obese for 40 years and headed towards morbid obesity if I didn't do something to stop it. My surgeon at my consult told me I should lose 100 pounds. I was 235 at the time so I was shooting for 135. When I went for my 6 month check up at 165 pounds he told me I could stop if I wanted. I was wearing a size 6-8, had normal blood work, blood pressure, no asthma and was off all pre-op meds. Today I'm in the top of my new goal range, (below 150) and will, with his blessing continue down no lower then 135 pounds.
I guess my point is "miserable" hits at different places for different people. I carried the extra weight fairly well until I hit 40, then it started affecting my health in a major way. I didn't have that much to lose compared to many here before I got healthy, but that does not diminish my journey, experience or effort. You need to do what you and your doctors deem is best for your health!

Glad to see this Stall Talk location is such a hit. I'm 7 weeks post op & had a short stall at 3 weeks. At 5 weeks I stalled for a week & gained 2 pounds. That's when I changed my carb intake. I try to stay under 50 but that's not always possible. I have now lost the 2 pounds so I'm hoping the weight keeps coming off. I am now allowed 1000 calories/day but it's hard to get that many calories in & keep the carbs down. I probably average around 800 calories. I also get in 60 grams of Protein per day. If I'm behind in my grams I will drink a Protein Shake of some kind. At the end of the day I like Unjury's chicken broth. Almost like having a cup of tea before bedtime. LOL

There's more of us than I thought! I'm another tall "carrys it well"-er.
My stepmother insists this pending surgery is way too drastic. Hellooo....I'm 57; if I haven't lost it by now I highly doubt I ever will. The other day she said to me,
"why don't you just cut back on your eating?"
*hits self in head, V8 style.*
OMG! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT??!!!!!

Why do you care what other people think or say? (Especially complete strangers on an internet site). Your body. Your health. Your decision. End of story.

There is a lot of good science that show the benefits of having WLS done between 30-40 bmi. The complication rate is halved, the short term recovery is easier, and there is a lesser amount of long-term weight regain. Not to mention avoiding many of the illness that are associated with an increased bmi.

My bmi was 35 when I got surgery, size 14, I'm 5'6. Family and friends had their opinions - they said you can do this on your own, blahblah, the fact is I could not do it on my own I lost the same 20 pounds for years! People have voluntary surgery all the time! My girlfriend who was against wls for me had her boobs done! What?! She did something to make herself feel more confident, so did I ! This is America, so it's only up to me what decisions I make ! And it's only up to you too! Good luck to you! Do what you makes you happy!

I understand clearly how you feel. Ultimately it is my desicion to handle my life in a style that suits me, and keeps me healthy. I was a Lapband self-pay recipient 10 yrs ago at 219 and was 29 yrs old, in Ormond Beach Florida. Went down sucessfully to 127 and maintained the weight. My family is obese and all have cardiac problems, thyroid, BP out of control diabetes...etc. Years later had a baby girl and put on 60 pounds with the band unfilled during pregnancy. then 4 months after baby girl born (she is 6 now- and no more children, I have an 18 yr old in college now) I was able to loose all the wieight again when the band was adjusted and filled. went down to 130lb for about 5 years...THEN BAND GOT SLIPPED!!. The band had slipped way loooow. Last year I started eating..and eating.. as there was no restriction anymore and in 1 year 6 months I have balloned up too nearly 190 pounds currently. I resemble nothing of what I used to 2 yrs ago. Now my feet are swoolen unable to walk much, again the bordeline out of control sugars-diabetic,heart is pounding with this heat, in Florida...breathing like a fish out of water...snoring....my knees are painful to move ...and the list is long...needless to say that i look at my pictures and at 40 yrs old... if I dont do something quick and fix the problem and put my self in a regimen of dieting and exercising I will have MEGA problems, I have to loose weight ASAP. i HAVE STRUGGLED WITH DIETING ALL MY LIFE..
The bottom line is I have realised that although my BMI is low in comparison to patients on this site, I have to control my life to noT spin into a heavy obese patient with medical problems for my family TO DEAL WITH.
For me Gastric sleeve is the answer. After speaking with physicians and surgeons...it is my viable option to control the weight, and live a healthier life. It dosent matter what anyone else says....you know your own heart and willingness to diet and exercise. THe bariatric surgery is a serious matter to consider. I am self pay (saving all I can to leave soon to Tijuana, to see Dr. Ponce d Leon in Tijuana, surgery at INT.
I am going to change my odds. It is up to you.

I'm not very tech savvy, so I don't know if you see pic. The after is about 5-10 lbs ago but am too lazy to update. I still log my food and exercise in My Fitness Pal. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do great. It's actually easier for low bmi'ers. Even at my age (65) it's been pretty smooth.

I was sleeved on 6/14. My HW: 224, SW: 208, CW: 190. I was feeling so good after surgery that I made the mistake of doing too much. Last Saturday in this hot Arkansas weather, I was helping my daughter move into her apartment and didn't take the time to drink fluids. BIG MISTAKE!!! I started getting dizzy and lightheaded. I'm still weak and dizzy, 5 days later, after trying to get in as much Fluid as possible. I'm just now starting to get back balanced! I probably should have gotten fluids IV but decided to try to drink, drink drink! I can't stress enough to keep hydrated!!!!

I didn't dare to say, but agree with NMJG.. it's not the butter or full fat cream that makes us fat, it's all the processed food and sugars etc. It is the combination of high fat and high sugar processed foods, most of us used to be addicted to, that made us fat. There is a lot of research out there proving that a natural fat as long as not accompanying it with lots of carbs are ok.

Actually, new research plus old research that was buried for many years says your mom is right. It's the carbs, not the fat. Take a look at Gary Taub's books Good Carbs Bad Carbs or Why We Get Fat. Journalistic discovery of all the research and studies over the years that did not agree with the low fat bandwagon. Nations around the world (like Sweden) are revising their nutritional guidelines as we speak.
I was low fat for decades, did nothing to keep me from gaining weight. Now I eat all the heavy cream and butter I want but keep my carbs very low and I maintain my weight very easily. Not to sound preachy, but the world is a-changing and everything we took for granted about nutrition since the 60's is being turned on its head.

The one that got me the most angry came from a GP doctor I'd been set up with on a new insurance policy. I never ever went back to him, and now he's been fired from the practice. I asked him for help with my weight - fighting tears and saying I'd tried everything out there - and he said,
"Have you ever thought of going on a diet?"
Yup. With a straight face too. I asked if he was serious, and when he was, I said no woman over 50 gets to 290 pounds without trying every freaking lousy diet, pill, and plan on the blasted planet!!!
My subsequent doc listened to me deeply, and then gently suggested i might want to look into WLS. When I said 'not for me' she said if I ever wanted to talk about it we could, and happily referred me for a sleep study, wisely noting I was always tired! She was right, and once i was sleeping enough to make sense of the world - I made sense of her suggestion about WLS. I inquired and she referred me within hours of my email to her on it!

lambada reacted to livvsmum in 9 Months and 126 Pounds Lost - with pics
Hi all - Just thought I would share my 9 month post op pics. I've lost 126 pounds so far with about 8 to go until goal. While the weight is still coming off, one of the most significant things I've started to do this month is begin to work through the emotional and compulsive eating issues that got me to nearly 300 pounds to begin with. It's been a really emotional month, but I am feeling really good about keeping the weight off long term because I am starting to deal with the core issues rather than the symptoms.
Anyway, here are my most recent pics.

I am now 2 months and 9 days Post Op. It has been a rough road. I had surgery on 4/9. I could not regain ANY of my of energy, could not eat/drink hardly anything. On May 11th I was sitting at work and began to have severe pain in my shoulder. I laid down in my car during lunch and went back to work after lunch....at this point I was in tears to my boss I was in such pain. I finished the day out, went home and went straight to bed. At 5:30 the following morning I called my mom to take me to the ER...(she lives 2 hours away) by the time she got to me and we got to the ER it was around 9:30am....by 11am I was in surgery again. I had a perforation where my esophagus meets my stomach (basically I was filling up with air). It was probably the worst pain I have EVER endured. I wanted to die. Honestly, I thought I was dying. Within a week after surgery I was FINALLY beginning to feel human again. Until this point I regretted the surgery. I felt I had made the worst mistake of my life.
Today...2 months and 9 days later..I am 37 pounds down.. Not sure how many inches I have lost, but I can tell a HUGE difference. I have so much energy. I have never been a go go go person, but that has changed. I want to continuously be on the go.I no longer feel like shooting myself in the head at meal times. I was finally released for exercise last week and let me tell you....my exercise partner is hating me this week, LOL...
I know I am rambling, but I wanted to tell my story incase anyone is having a tough time or having regrets. It WILL get better. I wish everyone the best of luck.

Wow...ice cream?? Tsk Tsk Tsk... live and learn sweety. Stick to Clear liquids, broth, sugar free pops, Jello, and i guarantee in about 2 days you'll feel good and in 5 days you'll feel almost like your old self, but lighter. Stay positive and walk walk walk, that's the ONLY thing that really helps gas/bloating pain. Walk every two hours, especially after eating/drinking anything and drink very small sips. I am 6 weeks out today and feel AMAZING!! Have lost 21 lbs since surgery down 2 dress sizes, have more energy now, no pain, eat real food (tiny amounts which I am good with) and feel terrific and happy. Good luck!

Two weeks today I had my surgery June 2nd to be exact, it has been an experience to be truthful
No complications, pain eased by day 4-5, slight setback with mouth and throat ulcers which were very very painful and made it difficult to swallow
When I do too much or I eat something which is not pureed or dry food-My body responds and makes me feel ill so I know not to do that again
I am focused on getting 6 small meals a day-64 ounces of H2O in but that is not as easy as it sounds if I could drink like before I would be able to but you have to drink small sips and not gulp it down.
Listening to my body and what it is telling me is something I am becoming better at.
The first 10 days I craved food but that craving has gone away thank goodness-I am now focused on eating high Protein food which is very savory, I do not have a sweet tooth at all.
I do feel hungry, the small meals leave me feeling contented
As you should take 30 mins or more to eat your meals, I have to dip my spoon in and lick the food off-this way it takes me 30ish mins.
I absolutely hate the shakes because they are so sweet so I have turned to Beneprotein which is tasteless.
I am loosing 1 lb daily sometimes every 2 days-My weight loss since surgery is about 17 lbs
