In the same plaza as my HEALTH CLUB there is an In and Out burger, Chili's, Chipolte, Subway, New York pizza Authority, Streets of NY, Village Inn, Paradise Bakery, Cold Stone Ice cream, Bosa donuts, Rubios, Del Taco, Jamba juice, another pizza place and a McDonald's in Walmart. Talk about temptation. Geesh.. Walking out of the health club is torture. =)

I am very early in this weight loss surgery process. I'm going to have my first weigh-in on Thursday after being on a required weight loss plan for the past month. Needless to say, I'm hungry! This afternoon, I needed to go to the CVS drug store that's about four miles from my house. Remember that I said I was hungry? This is a list of what I had to pass on my way to CVS: 2 fast food taco places, 5 hamburger places, 4 pizza ones, 3 Mexican restaurants, 2 donut shops, 2 Subway sandwich places, a deli restaurant, 2 Chinese restaurants (one a buffet), a steak house, a sports grill, a fried chicken place, an Italian restaurant, a Starbucks, A BBQ place and a wine bar. Behind the CVS, there is another pizza place and another Mexican restaurant. And I had to go past them all again to get home. This is just ONE street!!! It's no wonder I'm in the shape I'm in!! However, I will say that I didn't stop at any of them. I came home and had a Protein shake and a forth cup of almonds. But I really, REALLY want a Whataburger!

Ok so my dr requires 10 days on the liquid diet before surgery, the last 3 clear liquids only. I actually started early in case they could moved surgery up (they did, but only one day). So basically I have been on the liquid diet since the 1st. I only ate one night after they had called to tell me my definite date is thurs the 19th and I was more then 10 days out.
My weight loss has fluctuated between 6 and 13lbs. It has hung out around 10lbs most of the time. But I freak out at night when I check and it only has me down like 6. She said they will actually reschedule on some patients who haven't lost enough, like only 5 lbs because it shows they may not be ready to stick to it. But I have been so devoted and stuck to it UNTIL THIS EVENING! I had to go get a Five Guys burger and fries. I wanted to get it on Saturday night but they had already closed. So I literally have been waiting. Funny thing is pizza is my ultimate favorite and I met some friends from church at Pizza Hut for lunch and all I had was Water, but I knew I really wanted that burger. It was like the last supper for me.
Anyway, now I'm worried if I'll be on clear liquids long enough now. My surgery is Thursday the 19th.
    Anyone relate? Or have suggestions?

I am sorry but if we accepted being fat then we wouldnt be on here, having surgeries to change it. I am all about self-confidence and I know that I will never ever in my life be what society considers "thin" but I am not going to accept my fate of being fat. I'm going to try like hell to change it. It's okay to accept people of every body type and shape, as we should but I, personally, am not accepting the fat. That goes for me about myself. I am currently seeing someone who weighs 320 lbs and I find every bit of him to be sexy but if he wants to change it, that's his prerogative not mine!

the fat acceptance movement seems to have changed a lot in the 15 years since i first read stuff about it.
i am appalled, disgusted and revolted by the way people think they can treat obese people. i have worked with obese people who have PTSD from the way they have been treated. its horrendous. i dont understand where the venom and rage comes from. why some people feel that being fat makes one not human anymore. it not only confuses me, it makes me really really sad. i hate it and feel that its part of a larger problem of an non-compassionate and angry culture we live in.
but what i see now is not people talking about people treating obese people with common respect, compassion and kindness, but people who seem to believe that its better to be fat than healthy. because "thats who i am." and losing weight equals fat phobia. this seems a bizarre projection to me. not loving or caring for myself is how i got fat. loving myself was WHY i got this surgery... i dont care for myself now BECAUSE i lost 85 pounds. i lost weight because i cared enough to do something drastic to get healthy. i love my children, i love being their mommy. i dont want to drop dead when my kids are teens like my dad did.
a lot of what i see people posting on blogs and FB seem to be excuses for not getting healthy and taking care of themselves. i have an obese friend who posts all kinds of stuff on FB, and she doesnt seem to have a clue how she is coming across... bitter, blaming and a huge victim. that is NOT what the original fat acceptance movement was all about. now it just seems like fat people encouraging each other to stay fat, sick and unhealthy. its the flip side of those sites where people encourage each other in exercise addiction/bulimia/anorexia. really disturbing. imagine places online where people encouraged each other to shoot dope or drink addictively or gamble compulsively. somehow if its food, its different. (no, its not)

The kind of acceptance I would like to see is people stopping caring whether or not people are fat, thin, or what, whether they want to change their body or not and just treating each other like humans. The fat acceptance movement like that girl posted about is super extreme, it is just as bad as skinny people being so mean to fat people.

Anyone in the Reno area interested in putting together a group? In addition to informational sessions, Q & A, and guest speakers,I would like to see us do more than sit around taking about bariatric surgery. I'm thinking we can plan support group meetings, but also friends and family parties, with games, contests, a potluck (healthy choices and maybe more), we could have movie night, or board games, or billiards. So many ways to get together and share stories, successes, setbacks, wins. And make friends.

What do you think? Anyone interested? Anyone have any more ideas?

    I found a study...
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1421028/
It basically states that 60% had excellent results after 5 years, while 33% had good results. 7% a BMI of >35.
A small amount of weight gain is not the real issue. It's can you lose the weight and keep the majority of it off.
However, my nut said that of those that are successful at maintaining 80% of their weight loss 5 years later (the accepted definition of successful barbaric surgery)... over 60% track what they eat daily. You have the power to maintain the good habits the surgery helps you obtain.
And lastly... from what i've read on these forums... stick to the guidelines given by your nut and surgeon. Don't try to eat things you shouldn't. The worst thing you can do is discover your pouch doesn't have a problem with ice cream, candy or fried foods. Best to assume it will and never test it.
I will be putting my money where my mouth is on Monday. Wish me luck!

It's funny how people seem to think dieting is so easy. Just 'push away from the table, tubby'. You wouldn't tell a drug addict that it's easy to quit, just stop taking the drugs. Well guess what, you can quit drugs, and you never have to do them again. But you can't quit food. You still have to eat, three to six times a day. Good people don't offer recovering adicts drugs, but have no problem offering overweight or dieting people food. Why are we seen as weak willed and lazy. If we were addicted to drugs they would embrace us for trying to change.

I liked Melissa McCarthy when I first saw her in something; thought she was hysterical. But every single thing she does, is the exact same character. I do not see her as a social representation of "fat women", but I've gotten to the point where I don't care for her......or any actor that can't switch gears.
On another note, we're big fans of Drop Dead Diva, which portrays a heavy woman as intelligent and comfortable in her own skin. We don't like the show because of anything to do with her weight. We just simply.....enjoy the show. I can name several other heavy actors who play intelligent, professional women. I don't see Melissa McCarthy as a representation for the obese female population. I see her as someone who has stereotyped herself, but will hopefully break that annoying repetition down the road.

I just saw a commercial for a new movie with Melissa McCarthy in it. Why is she playing the same part over and over, portraying herself as a stupid, fat, slovenly, drunk who can't control herself? It really makes me mad because I think many people believe fat people are lazy and unable to have any self control. While I am no longer fat, it offends me because it is promoting that stereotype. Even when I was 267 lbs I was hard working, intelligent, and able to exhibit self control.
Grrrr it makes me really cranky!

I hope you find the good doctor you deserve......that connection is so important. You may have been spoiled by the previous relationship but you can at least get some one better than this one who may not be empathetic enough or may have issues with WLS as a solution. Any medical professional who doesn't get how amazing this is, how you have recovered your potential for a really healthy happy life, is not worth your co-pay.

Wether you gain some, all, or none of the weight you lose as a result of WLS is the responsibility of you, the patient.
When I had my band removed 6 months ago, the surgeon advised me to expect to gain 10 pounds. He also told me that if I made the effort to eat healthy, watch my portion sizes, and exercise, there was no reason I should not be able to maintain a healthy weight.
Today I still choose steamed veggies and not the baked potato. I don't eat bread. I still scoop up a bowl of ice cream for my husband and take a frozen Greek yogurt bar for my evening snack. I still don't drink with my meals. I can't remember the last piece of candy or cookie I had. I still exercise 4-5 days a week. The list goes on and on. But the point is that when the band came off, the healthy habits were in place.
All WLS patients have eating choices to make every day. Hopefully you have received some good guidance and education from your surgeons to redesign your relationship with food and lifestyle.
I know that it is still early for me, I am only 6 months out without my band. But I am cautiously optimistic that I will never be obese again. I have made healthier eating and exercise a priority in my life. Every day I Celebrate being able to move and enjoy life...and to date have gained 3 pounds back.
We all take a day a day at a time...and a choice at a time. Make yours healthy ones.

Today is my last week of work before surgery. I'm on full liquids today and tomorrow, then clear on Sunday. I'm hungry, but not terribly so. I'm not nervous yet. I'm actually really excited. On a side note, I had a job interview today with a company that could really start my career for me. I told them that of I were to be hired, I would need to give 2 weeks notice....(so I can heal up enough to work. lol)
