  1. I am 4 days post op, and I am having a weird complication. Before the surgery, I had perfect vision. Now, I am struggling to read at all. My vision is blurry & I can't seem to focus on anything. Words are blurry and objects seem to have "fuzz" around them. Has anyone else experienced this complication?

Changing Tastes: What were the big surprises for you?

Pre-op, I loved bread. Any kind of bread. I have tried bread post-op, and I HATE it. I wanted to have a little taste because I missed it, so I took a bite. The taste was so bad, I spit it out. I tried again a few days later with a different type of bread. Same reaction. Didn't swallow, just spit it out. I guess this is a blessing because of the carbs. lol
  3. I spent yesterday all day in bed and in a deep depressive mood. My live-in boyfriend couldn't even cheer me up, and it got him worried. Today, I made myself get out of the house and go watched a movie with the girls from work. That turned out to be a bomb because I sat there and ate a whole small bag of popcorn (movie small = normal large). Then I came home and cooked a pot roast and veggies and ate until I made myself sick. I feel myself starting to spin out of control and feel like I have no one near me that can relate to what I'm going through.

    It's been a rough weekend.

You all bring up a valid point. I was able to catch myself by recognizing what I did. I just need to pick my self up and move on and not dwell on it. I've done far more good than I have bad in the time since my surgery. I'm trying to focus on the good and to be happy, but sometimes it's just so hard. Sorry if it sounds like I'm whining.
  5. Lately, I've been having a lot of pain in my right upper abdomen area, and I think it may be due to my gall bladder. I am scheduling an appointment with my surgeon to have this checked out. I'd like to hear any of your experiences you've had with gallstones post-VSG. Has any one experienced gall stones? Has anyone had to have gall bladder removed because of stones post-op?

    Time off work

IMHO, yes, you are crazy. Especially if you have to lift and move patients after surgery. Most surgeons place lifting restrictions after surgery. Check with your surgeon about how much time he thinks you may need to take based on the kind of work you do, and if you have any restrictions. I have a desk job, no heavy lifting, and I was out for 2 weeks. I tried to go back after only 1 week, but I did not have the energy to sustain me through even 1/2 a day.
  7. I know I don't post much in here. I'm more of a lurker/reader than I am a posting participant. However, today I feel the need to share my progress. Sorry if this is kinda long. Today I am 50 days post-op. I went in to a weigh-in clinic this morning. I've lost another 13 pounds in 2 weeks. :svengo: Needless to say, I was floored when I got the news. I do not own a scale at home and the only scale I use is at my doctor's office. This keeps me from obsessing over the daily fluctuations of weight. This year to date, I've lost 55 pounds. :wink0: Since surgery day, I've lost 40 pounds. I've been working out 3-5 days a week for 20-30 minutes a day. This has been a huge change for me since I did not work out before surgery. My BMI has also plumeted from 47.9 to 39.5, which means I have dropped out of the Clinically Severe Obesity Class into the Obesity II Class on the BMI chart I have (see below): Ideal Weight = BMI 18.5 to 24.9 Overweight = 25.0-29.9 Obesity Class I = 30.0-34.9 Obesity Class II = 35.0-39.9 Clinically Severe Obesity Class III = >40.0 (nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, GOOD BYE!) I have had to purchase new clothes already because I can't be having my fat pants fall off at work. :lol0: My family has been super supportive and I am blessed to have roommates that are like family and they have been supportive as well. My coworkers have been awesome and supportive as well. My boss goes out of her way to make sure that if our team is being rewarded with food (ie. lunch) then she makes sure there is a food choice for me, or she awards me in a different way other than food if I request. I'm not having a problem getting all of my Protein in without Protein shakes (yay!) As long as I eat 5-6 times a day and focus on protein first, I've been doing well with that. The main challenge that I am facing is getting enough fluids to stay adequately hydrated. I wake up every morning with thrirst so bad that it feels like I walked through Death Valley in August with no Water. Today, I've been told to focus on getting back on the hydration wagon and to get my butt to the ER if I don't improve by this evening. I think I should have no problem with that today, because I'm taking the day off from work to drink drink drink. When I'm at work, it's hard to do that since I spend about 80% of my day talking on the phone with customers. Despite my setback in the hydration department, I am feeling better than I ever have in my adult life. I stopped smoking about 3 weeks before I had my VSG done. I am proud to say I am still smoke free. I am sleeping :sleep0: better at night and my energy levels during the day :w00t: are increasing. To say my sleeve is a blessing would be the understatemnet of the century. Each day I receive encouragement from those around me and I take that and run with it. 2010 is going down as my new re-birth year and my new birthday is June 28, 2010 (surgery day).

Useful protein/carb/fat chart for home cooks

Thank you so much for posting this link. It will be a useful tool for me. :thumbup1:

    Water after working out

Tamboo, I have the same problem. I am very thirsty after working out. I have found that drinking WHILE you're working out helps. Try to take sips as you're walking/biking/ellipticaling (lol?). sometimes I have to stop for just a few seconds to take a couple of sips, then I get back at it asap to keep the heart rate up.
  10. I went to the thrift store today and got 3 pairs of nice pants and 4 very nice shirts for work. All for $30.

    I <3 the Thrift Store

I live in New Orleans, so I am blessed to have a large plus size section with lots of selection in the thrift store.

I feel a visit to the doctor/ER coming on...

Doing much better today. Ended up at ER for dehydration. Got some fluids in me and was released. Feeling much much better today.
  13. I am 4 weeks post op and I'm having my first period since the surgery. This period is heavier than any I've ever had before. I'm bleeding through a heavy duty tampon and a XL maxi pad about every 2-3 hours. Also, I am having very watery diarrhea about every hour. I can't drink water or fluids because it's making me nauseated. I'm feeling very weak and very moody. I feel like I've been beat up by Mike Tyson, I'm so achy all over. Sorry for the TMI, but I have no one else to share this with.
  14. I've been told no heavy lifting 4-6 weeks out. Personally, I'd sit it out.

    Please help...

I've very sorry to hear that you are having such horrible complications. Be aggressive and keep looking for a doctor who will see you. I'd also call a lawyer. I'm sure the lawyer would have no problem crossing the surgeon to get to thebottom of what happened.

    NAKED drink

It looks like it is loaded with sugar and carbs. You may want to be careful of that, even if they are natural sugars and no sugar added.

    How much rabbit food

Right now I'm on blenderized food. My doc told me to try to balance my meals by having one Protein source and one of "something else". I'm trying to make veggies the "something else". I use canned veggies because they are easier to blenderize. I'm sure my diet will evolve and change as I come off mushie stuff. (TMI Alert!) Anyways, since I've started eating more veggies, I've not been so constipated.

    Ricotta Bake

Has anyone tried to make this by mixing in blenderized shrimp? Adds protein. I'm gonna give it a shot today and see how it comes out.

    Time Off Work

I have a desk job. I scheduled one week off. I went back Monday on week 2, and decided to take the rest of that week off as well, because I had no energy. I returned to work for good on Monday of week 3.
  20. Hello! I had my sleeve surgery on 6-28-2010. I really wish I would have found this forum before my surgery. My surgeon is Dr. David Treen, Surgical Center of Louisiana. I do not own a scale on purpose. If I had one, I would obsess about it daily. So the only scale I use is when I go to the doctor's office. My highest pre-op weight was 315 pounds. I have no clue what my weight is now. As soon as I know, I'll be happy to share. I'm looking forward to reading all of your posts and finding friends that I can relate with in the forum.

    NSV shout outs

I'm 8 days out and had a couple of NSV's today. 1. A shirt that did not fit me becasue it was too small before surgery fit me perfectly today. 2-4. I had 3 different people on 3 different occasions today tell me that they can tell I'm already losing weight because my cheeks aren't as puffy as they remember.
  22. Thanks again to all those with encouraging replies. I have cried everyday since I had the surgery. However, today was a better day. I did not cry. I returned to work today and was able to see many of my friends who had smiling faces and words of encouragement. A couple of them even told me that they could tell I was already losing weight because my cheeks were not as puffy. (NSV!) I had a NSV before work today too. I put on a shirt that did not fit me prior to the surgery and it fits perfectly now. Cant wait for a couple of weeks to pass and see that it's too big. I'm still having probs getting the Protein and nutrients, but I am hanging on to y'all's words of get the fluids in. Today at work was hard physically, because I became exhausted early in the day, and later in the day I had some pain from my incision sites. My boss is the bomb though, and recognized I was not feeling well and sent me home early, no doc in pay. YAY! Over all, I still feel a little down, but I will say things are getting better slowly. I still have not weighed myself. My doctor's appointment is next Tuesday, and I will weigh then. I'll probably invest in a scale for home, just because I'm so bloody curious. lol! I'll start a ticker next week.
  23. Thanks for all of the positive posts. I did the surgery because I want to live. My father died of his SECOND massive heartattack when he was only 42 years old. He had his first when he was 38. When I look in the mirror I could see myself walking in his foot steps. I did the surgery because I want to start a family. I want to be in good health when I decide to start my family, for myself and for my family. I will not say that this has been easy. My surg was on 6-28...a week ago tomorrow. And I have cried every day since then. I have not been able to get the nutrients in that I need to sustain, and I have felt like I made a huge mistake. I keep trying to tell myself that my stomach is still healing, but still, I worry that I'll never be able to get enough Protein in. Dr. Treen want us to have at MINIMUM 55 g of protein per day, and I can barely get in 25-30 at this point. I'm trying to stay positive, but the negative thoughts are dominating right now.
  24. I am 4 days post-op, and I am TERRIFIED that I'll not be able to get the nutrients I need. I can't comsume the volumes needed to ensure that I have at least 70 of protein per day. Everything I read says to stop when you feel full. Mixing Muscle Milk Light into 12 oz. of skim milk. I drink 2 ounces and feel like i'm gonna pop. I'm scared and alone and need help.
