stanpry got a reaction from LeaM in Arthritis meds after surgery
I hate to call someone out but birdlands reply is super insensitive. I have severe arthritis. Losing weight did nothing for arthritis pain. If you think Tumeric is the answer than take it but don't lecture other people to follow your anecdotal beliefs. I am on Daypro and cannot live without it. My Rheumatologist prescribes it and Pantoprozole. I have regular checkups to keep tabs on the band and 2 1/2 years later no problems.

Was banded 2 1/2 years ago. Lost 92 lbs in 6 months. Had to put back 15 lb as Dr. said I was
oo thin. You usually go on a liquid diet before surgery to shrink the liver as it has to be held out of the way during surgery. The smaller the liver the better. I have had no problems with the band. The band is not a magic solution as you can defeat it or any other bariatric option. You have to make a life time commitment to follow what you eat. There is no occasional beer or piece of cake. You have to keep track of what you eat at each meal. Till today I weigh everything before I cook it. I recommend My Fitness Pal app. to keep track. I wish you well.

My band was 13 years ago but I take plaquinil and Limbrel twice daily. Biggest issue you will have is swallowing meds but one at a time with a break in between shouldn't be a problem. I have aggressive osteoarthritis and need my meds too.

    stanpry got a reaction from mmartin3 in 2nd fill...enough?
Best to wait a week after a fill. I am a year and a half out and I cannot eat red meat other than chopped meat. I am OK with this. I find a lot of people will not give anything up. We have to give things up. We did not become overweight because we ate right. We have to learn a whole different way of eating.

I also had PF. About 15 years ago I had a simple operation on each foot about a month apart. I first tried all these exercises and inserts. They did nothing for me. The foot Dr. recommended the procedure. I was able to walk without pain immediately after the surgery. Dr. don't like to do this procedure but for me it was instant relief with no side effects.

stanpry got a reaction from Bell0614 in Considering the Lap Band!
First let me say it took me 2 1/2 years to make a decision to have lap band surgery. The surgery was really not anything to complain about. A little discomfort for a day. They kept me for 3 days because of other factors. I had always had acid reflux. The surgeon repaired a hiatial hernia. This cured my acid reflux and was able to discontinue my ppi medication. I was just about the same height and weight as you are. I lost 90 lbs. in 6 months. This was more than my goal but I am comfortable at my present weight. I do not feel the band but you can feel and see the port. I was lucky to have needed only 1 fill. At the beginning I limited myself to 800-1000 calories a day. It wasn't too difficult but you have to keep very careful records of what you eat. Use My Fitness Pal app. if you can. I count calories and watch carbs. This is contrary to what the weight loss center teaches. Eat Protein first then veg. etc. NO CHEATING. The only problem I have now is with red meat. I can only get chopped meat down. I have very little trouble with other food. Everything has to be moist. I now eat 2300-2500 calories a day. No deserts till today.
Hope I answered all your questions. Don't forget this is what works for me. Everyone is different. Best wishes

I would hit a stall for 2-3 weeks. Then suddenly 5 lb loss. Hang in there.
PS I weigh myself twice a day. I don't want to find out at the end of the week that I put on 5 lb. Easier to compensate when you may have added 1 or 2 lbs.

From personal experience I find when something gets stuck the worst thing that I can do is try to wash it down. This will cause me to throw up. I always was the first one to finish my meal. You have to slow down and take small bites. Chew your food than chew some more. I also find that I can't eat red meat. I can eat hamburgers and meat loaf. Everyone has to discover what they can tolerate and what they can't. Best wishes.

It took me 3 years to finally make a decision. I would do it all over again as this has been one of those life changing things that has produced fantastic results. This is not an easy decision to make. You have to be ready to change your eating habits and the way you look at eating. Lap band surgery is a tool. It can be defeated easily, but if you are ready to change this will produce great results. Hang in there and best of luck.

My own experience tells me that calories and carbs are the biggest contributors to weight gain or loss. I enter everything into My fitness Pal. I keep a scale on the counter to weigh everything that I eat. I have exceeded my goal and to keep from losing any more weight I have to eat about 2300-2500 calories a day. No Pasta, bread, or rice. No candy, cake, ice cream. NO CHEATING. I see postings where people cannot give up this or that. DISASTER. WLS is not a magic bullet to allow you to continue to eat as before. It is a tool to help but you ultimately are the one who has to make the intelligent choices.

Had almost no pain day 1. I was on a morphine pump. I used very little morphine. By day two no pain. Maybe I am lucky because the Dr. repaired a hiatil and umbilical hernia at the same time. Be careful with norco and all other opiates as they can be habit forming,

    Mmmmmm..... I don't agree.
Disclaimer. I am not a doctor, a nutritionist nor do I have any formal training in what I am about to say. This is my opinion only.

I have a REALLY hard time with the idea that some people hit 200+, 300+, 400+ pounds eating "normal" sized portions of good choices. I see that claim here all the time and I personally can't wrap my head around it. I am not saying that they aren't correct, but it is my opinion that they may be (MAY BE!) in a bit of denial on what they are eating, how much they are eating or what a "normal" portion is. I also wonder how many calories they are drinking. I do agree that 800 calories worth of doughnuts is going to affect you differently than 800 calories worth of lean chicken breast as far as building muscle, clogging your arteries, affecting your organs, etc. but as far as weight ...

What I do NOT understand is how a surgery like the sleeve or band will help someone who is already eating a calorie deficit, yet we hear that here all the time. On more than one occasion I've seen people write that they never ate more than 1200 calories a day and they gained massive amounts of weight for (insert reason here), yet now that they are sleeved and eating 1200 calories a day, they are losing. How is that possible?

I can see it if they have had bypass as that is malabsorbative, but the sleeve/band is only restrictive. I could easily (well, not easily but I could) eat 4000+ calories a day with my very tight sleeve if I ate crap all day without stopping. My ability to eat large portions has been reduced drastically. If I overeat, even by a bite, I am miserable. I am forced to slow down, eat smaller bites and chew they heck out of my food or I will slime and vomit.
I think quality of food does affect us, but I think the overall science of calories in/calories out is on point.

I am 73 years old. Had the surgery Feb. 2014. I have lost 92 lbs. Have passed my goal a while back. I had trouble walking and need a walker. I figured if I kept on gaining weight I would eventually be house bound. After weight loss my meds were cut tremendously. Blood press is great , cholesterol at the low end of normal. The weight loss has made a tremendous difference in my life. Weight loss surgery is a life time commitment. Stay with it.

I check carbs and calories. I don't worry about fat. At the begining I ate 800 - 1000 calories a day. No cheating. There were weeks that I lost nothing and then a week later 5 lbs. I till today keep a running list of calories and carbs eaten per day. I include everything no matter how small a piece. Use my fitness pal if you can. I achieved my goal and then some in 6 months. The trick don't cheat and don't give up. You will succeed.

I think that trying to maintain by removing the saline would be the best option. This way if you see yourself putting the weight back on you can go back and have a fill. I have met people who have not kept up with their weight loss Dr. and put all their weight back. If we could control ourselves we would not have a weight problem in the first place. Good luck.

I will speak only of my own results. I had Lap Band surgery 1 year ago. I lost 84 lbs in 6 months. I don't know if this is typical or not. I had 1 fill after surgery. If you are looking for a magic pill that allows you to eat what you want you haven't found it. Any of these surgeries are just tools to help you meet your objective (weight loss). You can beat any of these surgeries. Have a milk shake. Eat candy, cake, ice cream, foods high in carbs. I eat out once or twice a week. I research what I will order before I leave the house. Temptation is always present. It's up to you to resist. Losing weight will improve your life. In my case best choice that I could have made. Take your time. Research your options. I took years to make a decision. I have no regreats. Best of luck in any decision that you make.
