@@par1959, seriously tho? That's a very insensitive thing to say.and it's not true.I'm 30 years old and hope to be having surgery in November or December. I kno a few people who needed this surgery and got it in their twenties.they are not lazy, they have a disease.I've struggled with my weight for about 20 years. I was an athlete in school and still pretty heavy, by no means am I lazy. How are you on this site with such negative things to say?? That was the whole reason for my post, and then you get on here and say that????? Please don't comment on my post if that's what you have to offer,I came here because it's a safe place, please and thank you!!!

Yikes. Sorry that your family of all people are not being supportive. I got lucky in that category. I have only have one person say to me "Well why did you get surgery?" I told her because I was never going to do it on my own. That is the truth. People may say that is laziness but there is really so much more to it than that.
Very few people look at Obesity like they would look at Anorexia, as an eating disorder. Luckily my surgeon and their office do look at it that way. And WLS is a tool to help you to relearn healthy behaviors. Seeing the results that come with it and having the support of your doctor's office, friends, and people who are going through the same things you are like the people here on Bariatric Pal will really help you out along the way.
In the end, this is about your life - prolonging it through better health AND improving the quality of life immensely!!

The only thing you can do is try to educate people about the fact that most who are obese who loose weight will eventually gain it back, it's scientifically proven. We're all in the same boat here, we certainly didn't want to be obese, it's a disease that needs serious treatment. If people don't want to understand and think that what your doing is the easy way out invite them to read some of the comments about the struggles we go thru. This is by no means a walk in the park. It would kick my butt every day if I let it.
If that still doesn't work then it's their loss for not supporting you thru something that is so important to your life.

I took my very first vacation alone in April. I'm 55 and have never been out of New England and in 35yrs I had never been away from my husband. My hubby couldn't get time off from his new job so I went to visit my son in California all by myself. He wanted me to meet his girl, who might be 'the one'. I was very nervous about driving alone from the San Diego airport to San Clemente alone but I did fine. I had some adventures, and did some exploring alone. I got lost a couple times but was able to find my way w/o using the GPS -a little challenge I set for myself. I also got my first tattoo as a gift from my son. I was the only one in my family who didn't have one. This summer I want to try zip-lining. I was always too heavy to consider it before. I'm afraid of heights but I'm ready to conquer that fear. :-)
The best thing about being at goal has to be my newfound self confidence!

I am 6lbs away from my first major goal of 100 lbs... that leaves me 101lbs to go. I still have a long road ahead of me although I have kicked so major butt these last 4 months to get to where I am now. As a reward I am going to Disneyland in August. I am still thinking about what I will do when I hit my goal weight...

MissME reacted to LivingFree! in Be honest - does anyone regret the surgery?
I was sleeved at age 59--three years ago. I was obese my whole life (by at least 100 pounds most of my life). I suffered from , unspeakable ridicule from the time I was 10 years old. I was bullied for my fatness from grade 7 through high school. Obesity affected my ability to advance in my career, to find a husband, to have children, to feel like I was worthy to have a place in this world. Yes, to some that probably sounds extreme. It is what obesity did to me. So for me, the chance to be freed from the bonds of a lifetime of shame, how could there possibly be any regret to having VSG?
My life has changed in ways I never knew a person could feel about themselves. I have a lot of "catching up" to do in life--and I am well on my way to doing so.
Good luck with your decision. You will make the right one--you are already asking your first GREAT question!!!

MissMe - wow your advice is invaluable. Thank you so much for your insight on the surgery I'm really excited now reading what you it said some of the tips you gave me. This is why sites like these are so helpful to new people or people that are a little bit timid about going to this process. People like you make it seem a little bit more real and help to give a helpful perspective on it. I definitely know there will be struggles post op but I also know that in the long run this is the best thing for me and definitely something that's going to help to create a healthy life for me. Thank you again for everything and congratulations on your 3 month celebration!!

@@Mrs King, first of all congratulations!
I spent the last week before surgery on a liquid diet. My suggestion is just stick to it and don't give in to the 'last meal' temptations. It really is preparation for the weeks ahead when you will be on liquids and soft foods only.
After surgery Gas X was a good friend of mine. I got the strips that dissolve on your tongue that I would use whenever I felt gassy (a side effect of the surgery).
Everyone heals differently. For me I had a lot of soreness at the main incision site for about 3 1/2 weeks after surgery. The nurses at the hospital had given me a cool re-useable ice pack. I liked it so much they gave me a second one and I took them both home to ice the incision site. That helped a lot! I used it right up to the time when the pain finally became dull. Again, not everyone has the same type of muscle aches and pains at the incision site but it would be good to get an ice pack just in case.
Also, I am tall and I found that laying in bed or on a chair that didn't require me to strain to get up was a lot more comfortable then sitting in a low chair and having to fight my way out of it. This is less stressful on the incision site too. Pillows were also my constant companions, for compression and to prop me up on my bed.
I guess the last piece of advice would be to know that WLS is not easy, especially right after surgery. I was so tired of eating/drinking the same things that didn't care that I lost 20 lbs in two weeks. All I wanted was some flavor! There is sort of a mourning period for food but that gets better too. After weeks of sweet tasting things like Protein shakes, pudding, yogurt, and popsicles, having real food in the form of Egg Drop Soup and oatmeal helped me to soldier on until eventually I could start adding more flavorful things to my diet.
Looking back on the first few weeks after surgery I had some pretty miserable moments but I am nearly 3 months post OP now and things are going so well that I almost forgot all about that. If you find yourself in the same place I was just know that it always gets better and it definitely is worth it!

This should give you a clearer picture of where you are now and where you can be if you go through with the WLS. I guarantee you that the first two lists are a lot longer then the third.
