Congratulations! You are an inspiration to me. My starting weight was 498. I've lost 71 pounds, on my own and I want to lose more before my surgery date. It's rare that I see high starting numbers, so thank you for sharing you story! You give people like me hope!

Welcome MiniLynne, I also am just starting out. Met with my surgeon a week ago, start my pre-testing in just over a week. I first need to have a D&C due to polyps (caused by obesity), second procedure since Oct 2013. Yet another reason to have WLS. My surgeons plan is for mid March, no pre-surgical dieting needed other then the liquids before surgery. Keep up posted.

Hi, my name is Lynne and I'm just getting started on my wls journey. I have two education sessions this week coming up and my first appointment the following week. I'm planning on bypass but will come to a complete decision after speaking with the bariatric folks. Very excited to get started! So, I'm a wife to Jim for 16 years (almost) and have a 9 year old son. Also two cats and a dog! Can't forget my furbabies! I've been battling my weight most of my life to some degree. My most severe issues started once I hit college. Like everyone here, I've run the gammut of diets! I've done low carb, low cal, liquid, etc. Lost a lot and gained A LOT back! I'm so very ready to reclaim my life and participate and not just watch! I'm a bit of a shy person until I get comfortable so please, if I have a slow start here it's just me being socially awkward lol Really looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing our journeys together!

How has surgery changed your sex life? Just curious. I have a friend who said she lost all desire. I'm still early out so I haven't noticed any changes.

I had surgery sept 2012 starting at 448 present wt 242
I had some heart issues for almost a year during my rapid wt loss had to be off work on disability that was rough. Finally got it under control and went back to work august2013. I have become ABLE- I can chase my grandson, fit in most chairs, wipe my ass in any stall, enjoy cooking and eating, exercise ( I can swim laps for over an hour) walk a mile without debilitating pain and get in and out of a sofa with ease(I don't even think about it anymore- it used to worry me all the time once I sat down would I be able to get back up- can you say embarrassing).
I can not wait for onederland my goal is first to be under 200 then hopefully goal wt 160.

I am from the Allentown area. I had my Endoscopy today and it was a breeze. I was worried about it for nothing. I am hoping to have my surgery in mid February. I must wait until sleep study is done to get my surgery date.

I haven't felt nervous or anxious but for some reason I woke up at 1:30 and can't get back to sleep. So I'm wondering if subconsciously I'm anxious...is that possible???

Congrats! You should do a modified liquid diet. Maybe liquids all day and a sensible dinner. That way, is easier to transition back to all liquids! Good luck!

I was scheduled for surgery on the 29th but because of my blood work it had to be pushed back to Feb 10th. I'm not upset about this because my birthday is the 13th and this is my gift to myself. The problem that I do have is that I already started my liquid diet on Saturday. I now have to go back to eating regular food and restart the liquid diet on Monday.

I have a date! February 24, 2014! The last past three weeks have been very stressful. I didn't think I'd hit my mark but I did and I'm so excited! This is my first major surgery. Although I am ready, I'm scared of being put under. I have an endoscopy on Friday and I'm nervous about that! The funny part is that I'm not even afraid of surgery, just the sleep part lol. I'm too elated!I still have a lot of work to do. They want me as close to 400 as possible. I hope and pray, at my next weight check, I'm down some more. That's on February 10th.

Sweets Harmony reacted to Sally Johnston in How does gastric bypass surgery work?
During Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (gastric bypass) the top of the stomach is stapled to form a small pouch. The small pouch becomes a new, smaller stomach and is totally separate to the rest of the stomach. This small pouch is then ‘re-plumbed’ to the jejunum, the middle part of the small intestine, bypassing the first part of the intestine called the duodenum.

The new, smaller stomach pouch allows you to eat only a small amount of food before feeling satisfied. There are also some hormonal changes that occur help to decrease your appetite.
It is important to note that bypassing the first part of the intestine means less Vitamins and minerals are absorbed. This is why it is essential that you follow the advice of your team regarding Vitamin and mineral supplementation.
    Maintenance
Unlike the gastric band, the gastric bypass does not require any ongoing adjustments. However, follow up is necessary to ensure your weight loss is appropriate, you are receiving adequate nutrition and that the surgery is not having any negative effects on your health.
One study has found the most intense weight loss occurs in the first six months following gastric bypass surgery and will slow in the second six months, stabilising in the second year. It is likely, however, that everyone will have a different experience.
As with all forms of weight loss surgery, success is not guaranteed. Lifestyle changes including healthy eating and regular physical activity are key ingredients in your long term success following surgery. Whilst the size of the new stomach helps prevent overeating, the food choices you make are important. People who maintain their weight losses long term generally avoid high fat, high-energy foods.
As well as improving weight loss and maintenance, it is important to avoid high sugar and/or high fat foods as following gastric bypass surgery they can lead to a side effect called dumping syndrome. See a simple explanation of dumping syndrome here.
A 2012 study showed that following gastric bypass surgery, those who kept in closest contact with their support team achieved better results. Your team is there to guide you to get the best results following surgery, so make the most of them and keep in touch! They have all sorts of hints and tips to help you on a successful journey.

I had many medical issues due to my obesity also, including cardiac issues (MI w/Stent), type 2 diabetes, High BP, Cholesterol, circulatory issues, chronic skin issues including infections - cellulitis, and others, ...all kinds of issues, too many to list right now...I have a morbid family history with the loss of both of my siblings at an early age with obesity at the root...
My Dr. sat me down and said I did not have much longer on this earth, as I was following in my Brother and sisters footsteps...and the chips were already starting to fall...
He even asked me, friend to friend if I had made preparations and will y family be Ok with me gone...
Unless I loose weight....problem was, with all the diets I have tried over the last 35 years, I have failed at every one of them...I have no self discipline or motivation to stick with any type of program where it is left to me to manage...
So as a LAST RESORT...he suggested Surgery...surgery to alter my digestive system making it unable for me to overeat, and taking away my hunger and cravings...
And that is exactly what it did...and in return, it has reversed my Diabetes, ALL my lab work has been right down the middle perfect for the last 2 years...with NO MEDICATIONS, other than the Heart meds which I'm stuck with for life....
I feel 20-30 years younger, go to the gym every day....at 62 years old I play on a softball team - shortstop...and I am 6-7 years older than the next guy...
THIS SURGERY DOES WORK if you believe it can, and go for it and not back down....least that's my take on it...after all, what was my alternative? I had no choice but to give it 110%, and then some.
Sure, I had all the pre-op jitters, etc...but it turned out to be the absolute best thing I could have ever done...only regret is that I did not do it sooner....then I would not have wasted all that time and money on all those diets.

Can't help with specific advice on bypass -I am a sleever- but I can tell you you are not disgusting and you are not alone. We all have our own stories and many people have been where you are and come through.
You are worn down by pain, house bound, scared and lonely - that's why you feel like you do. Please remember, you are a worthwhile human being who deserves more and I am glad you are considering WLS because one way to get back your sense of self-worth is to lose weight, everything else will start to fall into the place on the back of that.
You also sound defeated before you start - but I get why. All I would ask is that you keep an open mind about surgery. Yes, it is about limiting intake but it's also about helping us to understand what we need to eat make our bodies work healthily. Whilst amount is important, quality is everything. It is also a great tool that supports us in a way that no diet ever did. I could lose weight before but just couldn't keep it off. But now I truly believe I can because of my sleeve -and that feels amazing, I am not doing this alone.
I can hear the fear and the upset you feel about where you find yourself today. But the darkest time is just before light dawns. Take your courage in your hands and starting researching WLS options and what might best suit you. Because, in doing so, you might just save yourself from a life of more of the same misery. It will also help with your ill health - can you imagine life without pain, diabetes? Surgery could help with all of that.
It's not easy. But it would give you your life back. More control over how you live. Give you choices about going out or staying in. Having friends and a social life. Being yourself. Having fun. Not a decision to be taken lightly but one worth considering but only you can make it.
Keep talking on the site. We are all here and you have something important to say. So we will be listening... Just don't give up on yourself, there's still hope and much you can do to transform your life is a way you would say isn't possible. But I promise you it is....

Hi Mag. My husband has been diabetic 35 years and just retired recently. One of the reasons I wanted him to have the sleeve is so I would not ever wake again at 3 am and find him unconscious, another Rescue ride. He has also dealt with back problems and back surgery, and high blood pressure and heart stent. I have asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a knee replacement, and just retired after 47 years of working. It has been a hard road for us both.
I think you are suffering from depression as you have a lot of issues, and I hope you can find someone to talk to. That would help you tremendously.
Eating small meals, we sometimes do not realize that chicken pot pies (frozen), have so much carbs, fat and sodium and not so good for us. On Weight Watchers, I learned the Soups they recommended were loaded with sodium so I gained weight. There is so much to learn about these foods. Please try to switch to unsweetened iced tea! Better yet, Water.< /p>
I know you feel so bad about yourself from your post, and I have felt like that too, being overweight, barely able to walk after knee surgery, and being depressed. I have read many posts like yours. Make a decision how you can help yourself. There really is light at the end of the tunnel and I will pray that you find the answers and help you need. Linda
