Bandarella got a reaction from steelemagnolia in Revision - unexpectef side effects
If you're on IV fluids you won't get dehydrated. Do what the nurses tell you to do. Your stomach has been cut and sutured/stapled, of course there's going to be some blood. It looks like more when mixed with saliva and Water.< /p>
When you get home, follow the food progression exactly. Scar tissue needs to form around the sutures and or staples in your stomach to strengthen and heal. If you overdo it in the first few weeks and put pressure on the suture line, the scar tissue fibers can break down.
    Congrats on your revision!!!!

Bandarella got a reaction from LilMissDiva Irene in Do you think your life would have been better or worse without WLS?
I needed wls because I became disabled and just kept gaining. I topped out at 290, having gained 50 lb after my disability. I started researching 2 years before surgery and since I was on Medicare disability had to meet their criteria. At the time of my surgery, only RNY or Lapband were approved and I didn't want RNY. I needed help with Portion Control and felt that Lapband or sleeve would work for me. I did well with my band...I was compliant, I dieted and tried to get some exercise daily and lost 100 lb. I was able to walk a mile (I need knee replacement due to sports and work injuries) go up and down stairs. I went from 26-28 clothes to 16 (loose). I didn't resolve my comorbidities except sleep apnea. I felt like it saved my life' until it threatened my life with complications. Unfortunately my band was misplaced by my surgeon (this occurs 3% of the time) on the esophagus, between the gastoesophageal junction and diaphragm. I was doomed from the start. Now, due to the damage to my esophagus and stomach I cannot revise and have a cardiac arrythmia from vagus nerve damage from the band. I'm still better off weight wise, but my overall health is not improved.

@2muchfun. When food is stuck in the esophagus, it has to come up or we can aspirate and get pneumonia. It's not being vomited up from the stomach, but being regurgitated before getting to the stomach, so stomach acid isn't an issue. You're correct in saying the op needs me fiscal help, but from her surgeon...

If you can bend over the toilet and what you ate comes back up, that's regurgitation, not vomiting and indicates esophageal damage. food isn't getting to your stomach, it's stuck in your esophagus. Please see your surgeon ASAP. Best of luck and congrats on reaching goal!

Bandarella got a reaction from BarbCB in Help deciding btw LB and gastric sleeve
Reasons not to get a Lapband:
    1) what are the chances you will go 5-10 years without getting a severe stomach virus, vomiting and risk slipping your band? It's a completely unrealistic expectation.
    2) like you said, you're tired of being a pincushion.
    3) with the late complication/removal rate in the 50% range, why risk it.
    4) early complications with sleeve are 1.5 %, band is .5% + 3% risk it will be placed improperly...
    5) with sleeve, you heal and live normally...you already know what life with a band is like!
    Best of luck!!

Bandarella got a reaction from PuffyOne2014 in What happens after gastric band removal without additional bariatric surgery?
As someone who a) followed all the "rules" and still suffer with the permanent damage to my stomach, esophagus and heart, hearing people who have had no complications and still have their band responding to this post with statements that blame the patient is frustrating.
Most people don't understand the bio mechanics of how the band can affect our digestive system or even how the band works to quiet appetite. This is true, even among non-bariatric medical professionals...I know, because my own providers have been nearly as frustrated as I in determining if my symptoms were band caused or not. When common sense was applied to the equation, a very qualified doctor asked me if I had any problems swallowing before banding. I answered that I had not...he shrugged his shoulders and said, let's get it out! 90% of my GI symptoms have resolved. I am dealing with cardiac problems that are due to the achalasia I developed while banded.
My cardiologist and electrophysiologist are in agreement that it's pointless to do catheterization/ablation when the arrhythmia is caused by something outside the heart.
The anxiety and stress the band and complications have caused is enormous.
Also, good surgeons will remove as much scar tissue as possible. The only post band "restriction" I have is when food is stuck in my esophagus due to achalasia.

@@KateB with PCOS, there is a connection between the condition and diabetes, so it's very relevant. Managing Bg through any means is helpful in PCOS.
What I found interesting is that adjustable gastric banding was shown to be less effective in managing comorbidities than the other WLS and that gastric sleeve was significantly more effective than AGB without the risk of RH with RNY. Good post@@BeagleLover

As TMF said, give your fill a chance to take effect. There's a reason they make you wait 3-4 weeks between fills and there's a good reason they only fill in small increments. Once you feel restriction, the margin for error is very small. Even as little as .1cc can put you in the red zone and potentially harm your stomach and or esophagus. I'm sure when you went to your pre-op appointments they laid out the protocol for you. Overfilling and aggressive fills are very dangerous.

Bandarella reacted to Terry Poperszky in A word to guys, and those with guys in your life…
There is a lot of FUD right now about how effective a yearly PSA test is, even to the point of recommending that guys consider not having it checked on a yearly basis. I personally have mine tested every year and have been watching PSA climb over the last several years, and when I went in for this year’s physical, my PCP kicked me back to a urologist for a biopsy, and the biopsy came back positive for prostate cancer.
2 weeks ago yesterday, I had my prostate removed, walked out of the hospital 24 hours later, got my pathology report back 5 days later showing that the cancer was contained in the prostate and I had a 90% of remaining clean.
The point is, I didn’t have symptoms, fact is the surgeon, said that I probably wouldn’t have had symptoms for another 5 years. My surgery was easier because of two things:
    1. We caught it early
    2. My dropping 70 pounds over the last year.
So, if you are over 40, eat your pride, drop your drawers and try and relax, it could save your life.

Bandarella reacted to 2muchfun in scope down throat into stomach
I agree it's a good idea to take some or all saline out but the scope would have to break/tear through the lining of the stomach before it could damage the band. I'd think ripping through the lining of the stomach would be just a little more troubling than damaging the band.

If you're having persistent headaches, call your doctor. Headaches can occur when blood glucose is low...maybe that is a signal that you need a little snack of protein/healthy carbs. When my am Bg was less than 70 my nutritionist suggested a snack like this in a ratio of 1gr Protein to 2 gr healthy carbs...so 10 gr protein to 20 gr carb...I would eat a cheese stick and a couple of whole grain crackers at bedtime and my am Bg stabilized at 90-100.

No, not suing. I have two options; sue and get tied up in litigation for years or let go of it and live my life. I choose the latter. Life is too short. My surgeon is well respected and has never had a malpractice complaint, so I see this as simply a mistake. The fact that the support team at the hospital/clinic hid the fact that it was mis placed is unconscionable.
